camping

I'm looking for some suggestions on places to camp near and around Phoenix for when it cools down a bit.

By camping, I don't mean RV camping (most Google searches are leading to this). I mean regular camping with or without a tent. I am looking for somewhere secluded and preferably with a fire pit. Does this exist?

If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them! Descriptions would be even better. Thanks!

Kitty needs a home!!!!

We found this little kitty during one of the really bad thunderstorms a few weeks ago. She was nothing but skin and bones, and she was shaking from the cold. We took her in and nursed her back to health. She's a good kitty, but we have 2 others, and they're seriously pissed that she's here. It's causing our other cats to act up, so we need her to go to a good home.

She would probably do better to be the only kitty in the house, but is pretty good at keeping to herself as long as the other cats don't terrorize her. We're not sure how she is with kids.

We're guessing she's roughly a year old, but we're not certain.

*note* No, her nails are not painted. We put SoftPaws on her the day we brought her home. Just in case she decided to scratch the furniture.

If you (or anyone you know) would like her, please leave me a comment. I would hate to have to take her to a shelter, but we just can't keep her here. If necessary, we can arrange to bring her to you (within reason - we live in north-central Phoenix).

Car Engine for sale.

Normally I don't make posts like this, but I want to get rid of an engine my dad had basically rebuilt before he passed away. It's a Ford 5.0 liter V6(I think) with all the parts needed for a fuel injection system to be put together with it. I think the electrical harness is here too, though it's been years since he was last able to work on it. I can't remember what year or model it was intended for but he had at one point wanted to put it into a '67 Mustang, so I think it might have been for at least one of them or another kind of sports car.

My location is near 35th Ave. and Cactus Rd. (though more toward Sweetwater than Cactus on 35th.) and I can be reached at 602-334-0891 (my cell phone). The parts for it are included (I think all of them are here, please don't quote me on this as we never got to compile a list of what was accounted for or if there are engine mounts too).

Moving Soon

Hi there!

I joined this community a couple of weeks back because my husband and I, along with our kids, are moving from SoCal to the Phoenix area here in about a month or so and I wanted to get a general idea of some stuff..

1. Where are the safer, more family oriented area to live? We're finding a lot of nice houses in our price range in Queen Creek, but a friend told us that it's out in the boondocks. Any info on places close to "stuff" would be fantastic.
2. What is there to do in Phoenix as adults and as a family? We have a ten year old and a one year old. Kid friendly info and adult friendly info would be great and totally appreciated.
3. Has it been raining a lot this past summer? I keep seeing on the news that it's monsoon season right now, but what does that mean? Does it start raining at a certain time everyday and rain for an hour or...? I've lived on the coast my whole life and my husband is from the south. Neither of us know anything about living in the desert so, advice and info would be great

also, if anyone knows of any phoenix specific websites (already looking at azcental.com :-) )with info on housing and jobs and what not that would be great too.

Thanks a bunch!

Book club looking for new members

Our book club has been established for about 8 months and we're looking for new people who want to participate. We read a pretty wide variety of books and meet every two to three week to discuss, depending on people's schedules and the length of the book. We typically meet at one of the member's houses or at a restaurant. It's usually a Tuesday night or Sunday morning brunch. The atmosphere is laid back and no one will care if you show up to the discussion without finishing it. We've had sort of a rotating membership - people come and go - but our core group is currently six people: two men and four women.

Here are the books we have read so far, so you can tell if this is up your alley:

Twilight - Stephanie Meyer
Water for Elephants - Sara Gruen
This is Your Brain on Music - David J. Levitin
Devil in the White City - Erik Larson
The Sirens of Titan - Kurt Vonnegut
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - Jean-Dominique Bauby
Infidel - Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Speak Softly, She Can Hear - Pam Lewis
The Island - Victoria Hislop
The Bluest Eye - Toni Morrison
The Double - Jose Saramago
Sway - Zachary Lazar

Contact me at cwayers at gmail dot com if you are interested.

I'm moving to the Phx area in the beginning of July (OMG!) and am still looking for somewhere to live (I'm moving from across the country). I'll be working just south of Avondale but can't seem to find any avail. rentals in Avondale. Does anyone know where I could find listings for Avondale rentals (I've tried all those sites like rent.com, apartments.com, hotspots.com).

I've (kind of) settled on an Apartment called "The Arbors" in Tempe for the moment, but am unsure of the neighborhood and the people. Its address is 805 Brown St. I've looked at the crime stats on Tempe's Website but its completly not helpful.

So three questions:

1) Where are the Avondale Rental Listings hiding?

2) Is "The Arbors Apartments" in Tempe a safe complex?

and

3) If neither of the above qualify can anyone recommend any good, safe places to live within a short driving distance of Avondale? (I'm looking for either a studio or a 1 bedroom less than $800/month).

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

He passed away earlier this week. The details can be found in the article. Someone was kind enough to let me know what had happened, and I know that he had a number of friends here in the Phoenix area that may or may not be aware. His friends are planning a memorial service for Saturday morning, and the details will be forthcoming in a blog on one of their myspaces, which can be found at:

http://www.myspace.com/xoebia

To & From Airport Transportation

I am currently without a car, but I need to get to the airport for a trip soon, and then I'll need to get home. I am not too familiar with buses and taxis.

I got an online quote from Super Shuttle, and it was $25. I know the bus can get me there, and it would be a lot cheaper, but according to the website my whole trip would be about 3 hours. I don't know how much a taxi would be, but I assume it would be more than $25. Right now I'm leaning towards the Super Shuttle.

Is there any other type of transportation (besides hitch-hiking :P) that I should consider? Do I need to tip the Shuttle driver?! Thanks! I live in East Mesa.
