Trey, Mike, and the Duo - Toronto
Last night I have to admit I was blown away. The Duo opened with a short 45 minute set and then came back for a monster 2 hour set with Mike and Trey. They opened the set with sand and continued with a bunch of trey solo material and duo material. There was alot of high energy jamming and some heavy space. Trey and Mike had a short acoustic set (guitar and banjo) where they played a tear jerking waste (I had tears in my eyes) and also a cover of willie Nelson's "On The Road Again" "On the road again I can't wait to get back on the road agian. The life I love is making music with my friends. I can't wait to get on the road again". If thats not a direct reply to a phish reunion I don't know what is. The highlight of the night was a flawless monster cover of "Who Are You". I was so blown away I couldn't move. It looked like joey was gonna pass out he was playing so hard. TheY also played a shakey request for the Guess Who's "These Eyes" after trey admitted that the first album he had ever owned was "the best of the Guess Who". I was really pleased with the performance. There was some nice interplay between Marco and Trey the whole night and Mike was amazing as usual playing the masterful bass, banjo and the acoustic guitar solo in "Who Are You". I have only heard the Duo on downloads and was certain they had used a drum machine along with Joey's drumming. Last night was all Russo. At moments I swear he was hitting so quick that his hands and sticks were invisible. The show also showcased Marco and Joey's versatility quite nicely. One of the down points was when the Duo were playing Memphis in the first set some disrespectful ape yells out somthing along the lines of "Thanks for introducing the band so now lets bring them out". When the song was over Marco asked what that guy had said then saying "I don't know what he said but it was perfect timing". Talk about ruining an audience recording. oh yeah it's Canada (the croud was dead quite and sitting through most of the show)
I'd like to hear about some of the other dates on the tour so please leave some comments or post details.
