Hostile Takeovers
I have assumed sole maintainership of this community.

See the info page for my standard policies.

New policies will be added and enforced at my whim, often without notice.

[info]ragnarok20 has been banned for incompetent mocking and inability to engage in worthwhile discussion.

Update: [info]enders_shadow has been banned at his request.

I'm leaving. I was hoping for a community where dedicated philosophy majors could gather without the drama of other philosophy communities, but unfortunately you and your gang have managed to transfer it here. I wouldn't normally complain about this stuff, but at least all the other times this kind of drama has surfaced, it has been somewhat funny.

How much philosophy should I know by the end of my first year as a phil major?

That depends entirely on which philosophy courses you have taken and how much outside reading you have done.

If you didn't take any classes to get other stuff out of the way? Probably you won't know so much.

If you took all philosophy all the time? You should know a lot of the basic stuff.

I am delightfully amused, particularly by the info page. I love it. ;D

When I stop being lazy about it, I'm planning on posting a list of philosophy books that I need to sell, if that is all right. I figure it would make sense to post here, but if that's not okay, let me know.

I'm with [info]mychimaera.

Now, I wonder, oh evil dictator, if you will delete this comment, to HIDE YOUR FUCKING EVIL NATURE.

To all who stay:

Without warning or reason [info]zentiger removed me and my co-mod. Now plenty of you recognize my handle and think I'm some kind of fucktard. That's well and good. How many of you know the other mod? [info]othartheom did nothing to deserve [info]zentiger's wrath. His lack of confidence requires that he be the sole controller, since he doesn't like anybody challenging him.

This is the opposite of what a good philosopher should do. Philosophy, while not democratic, should be meritocratic. Plato's Republic was set up as one, and to my eyes, meritocracy is the best way to go about mostly anything. So yes, I made [info]zentiger a co-mod, presuming that a more learned scholar than myself could help keep quality control up. I did not expect a stab in the back, from somebody who professes to be a professor, and have a desire to teach and/or learn philosophy.

Perhaps I am to blame. But handing somebody a baseball bat, doesn't make you responsible when they club you over the head with it. I extended a flag of truce and comraderie--only to have the rug pulled out from under me.

Fellow philosophers, I emplore you, do not let [info]zentiger get away with his shenanigans (which are evil, and not funny, and if you think about it, that makes them not really shenanigans at all...)

Do the wise thing.

I did not expect a stab in the back

His icon is of a character from Gladiator who does exactly that (quite literally, at one point). In the past, he has openly expressed contempt for you and your ability reason (or lack of it) and ignorance (which is wonderfully displayed in the line "Plato's Republic was set up as [a meritocracy].")

But handing somebody a baseball bat, doesn't make you responsible when they club you over the head with it.

Yes it does.

presuming that a more learned scholar than myself could help keep quality control up.

You presumed correctly. In fact, this is, as far as I can tell, the first correct presumption you have ever made on LJ. Because this is exactly what these bannings accomplish.

Just a suggestion....
[info]unsoughtfacade
2007-07-12 11:24 pm UTC (link)
When I applied to grad school last year, I'd wished that there was a place for other philosophy applicants to discuss aspects of the admissions process that were particular to philosophy. [info]applyingtograd was too generic for a lot of questions. (Totally worthless for questions related to writing samples, many of the responses to questions about SOPs seemed way off the mark for philosophy, people didn't know about specific programs, etc.) [info]philgradschool is designed to be exclusively a place for people to weigh their options once they've been accepted to grad school. I'd thought that, given the community's title, this might be the place for such questions...but the members of this community didn't seem the sort of people who'd be of any use to me, and browsing through the archives it seemed no one had ever posted a serious question about grad school.

There are plenty of LJ communities devoted to philosophy. Perhaps rather than another community for philosophical discourse, it would be more useful to have a community devoted to issues related to philosophy majors. Discussion about course selection, grad school applications, advisors, affirmative action in philosophy, etc. could be promoted, those who want to philosophize could be directed towards [info]philosophy/[info]real_philosophy, and (hopefully) if the bullshit were eliminated, more useful people could be persuaded to read this.

Discussing the grad school application process (in philosophy, obviously) certainly falls within the purview of this community, and will be encouraged.

I want to avoid discussion about advisors in specific - that is, I don't want this to turn into a "My advisor Jim is a dickwad" sort of community - but advising experiences in general are certainly good stuff.

However, I do want to continue to encourage philosophical discourse here as well, mostly because I'm aware that any time you have three hundred philosophy students in the same area, it's going to happen anyway.
