(For more info on ACT-UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) Philadelphia, go to http://www.critpath.org/actup/)

The People's Movie Night's is every Saturday at 7:30PM at Wooden Shoe Books, Philadelphia's 31 year old Anarchist Bookstore collective, and the movies are ALWAYS FREE.

Wooden Shoe Books
508 s. 5th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19147
215-413-0999
sabot@woodenshoebooks.com
www.woodenshoebooks.com

The People's Movie Night

Saturday June 21st 7:30PM Voices from the Front

In New York City, a distraught activist confronts the mayor with a story of a friend who languished on a cot in an emergency room hallway for nine days, only to die 48 hours after leaving the hospital. In 1988, thousands of activists hold the Food and Drug Administration under siege, demanding speedier drug approval. In 1990 AIDS activists converge on the National Institute of Health, calling for a more equitable clinical trial system and expanded research into new drugs and treatment.

Voices From the Front, the first feature-length documentary on AIDS activism in America, makes clear the emotional and political effects of community activism using the voices of those directly engaged. It is a powerful distillation of pictures and words from events organized to change public consciousness, expose the failure of the health care systems, and challenge government inaction and neglect concerning AIDS.

PLUS! A panel of local HIV/AIDS activists involved in ACT UP(AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) will be on hand to discuss current issues affecting people livings with HIV/AIDS, upcoming actions and the 20th anniversary of ACT UP Philly. (for more information on ACT-UP Philly, go to http://www.critpath.org/actup/)

looking for a female roommate

Hi everyone! I am looking to move into downtown Philadelphia as soon as I can, and I am looking for a female roommate my age or older to share an apartment with. Preferably someone who also doesn't smoke and does not have any free-roaming pets.

I am 25, a non-smoker and am a video and web professional. The job I currently have is virtual so I'd be working from home a fair amount of the time, but I also work out of cafes and shared office spaces.

I am a friendly, clean and quiet person who also enjoys having fun and being friendly with roomies. I am very respectful of others' space. I enjoy watching movies, reading, photography and cooking. Most weekends I do low-key hanging out with friends but also go out sometimes.

I am heavily involved in the local new media scene and am, to put it plainly, a geek. I watch Doctor Who and Battlestar: Galactica and read alt comics.

I am looking to move ASAP and my range is about $500-$600/month plus utils. I don't need cable or a landline, just good internets.

If you are interested, please comment and I will send you my email address so we can talk further. Also, if you know anyone who is in need of a roomie, please send them my way.

Thanks for reading! I'm x-posting this in a few comms to cover my bases, so apologies in advance.

flea market

Joe Coffee at 1100 Walnut is having a second flea market on Saturday June 7, and is still looking for vendors. Table space is (I think) $15 or $20 depending on the size of the space. You bring your own table if you want one, but they'll provide chairs. Vendor fees go toward a solar-powered coffee dryer for farmers in Peru, and you keep whatever money you make. Last time some people sold art or crafts and some sold junk and knicknacks from around their house.

For more info:

http://www.joecoffeebar.com/events.html

Hey all, i have a question. I have a stack of books starting from my freshman year of college and they are old editions so i know i wont be able to sell them back anywhere. I feel bad just throwing them out, especially because most of them are in new condition, and barely used. Does anyone know if i could sell them back anywhere or atleast donate them so ill know they are being used? They range from all different subjects such as bio, nursing, italian, public speaking...thanks for your help.

Just a reminder about tonights First Friday party!
9-12 PM
We have the entire balcony lounge with bar and bowling lanes at our disposal throughout the show.

It's a great space to have a party and I'm very excited to have been given the opportunity to show this month! I hope you can make it out to share in the revelry!

*Gala Opening Reception*
Friday, May 2 At the North Bowl Lounge in Northern Liberties
First Friday Gallery Walk after party featuring artwork by up and coming artist Nicole FitzGibbon
www. northbowlphilly. com

See you there!

Also, select works can be seen this May at:
The PHOENIX VILLAGE ART CENTER in Phoenixville, PA
And GALLERY ONE in Concordville, PA

About the works of Nicole FitzGibbon
Look for the Butterflies…
In each of these limited edition prints, there is a butterfly. The butterfly functions like a stamp or in Chinese art, a signature of the artist.

These prints are made in celebration of the capabilities in the modern age- a type of digital printmaking of multimedia. The artist takes a photograph and uses the computer to modify it digitally; then, the image is printed and painted on by hand. The work is then scanned back into the computer for more work and the final output.

These pieces are meditatively created in the mindset of “play” and imagination. They invite the viewer to invent what they see, similar to taking the time to find objects and creatures in the formations of clouds. The works, through this mode of invention, also reveal the solipsism of viewer in what their past experience and mindset in the moment leads them to discover visually. The viewers focus on the image will change as more is discovered giving these still images a slow motion created solely by the viewer.

“Play. Without it, we cannot invent. Without invention, we cannot progress.

”
Nicole FitzGibbon is an artist local to the Philadelphia area. She graduated from both Bryn Mawr College and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with degrees in art. She also trained in Italy at the International School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. She is influenced by the concepts of Buddhism and the spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement. Now practicing art in Chadds Ford, Nicole continues her study of art and life through continued observation of visual interrelation and discovery through process.

www. nicolekristianastudio. com

thrift stores?

Hi, I have a question about thrift stores, or stores in Philadelphia that allow you to sell used clothes, in good condition, to them. I have some clothes that are in good condition and always give it away to good will.. well now, i would love a little extra cash and i read in a magazine that it is possible to sell back some stuff for a few bucks. I wanted to know which stores in Philadelphia do that? I live in NE, but I'm all over the city so i'd be willing to go pretty much anywhere. Thank you!

The Community College of Philadelphia Architecture Program and the Utopian Design Collective are proud to present a Lecture by Dr. Dickson Despommier of the Vertical Farm Project. As an agricultural and environmental crisis looms, Dr. Despommier, a Columbia university luminary, has dared to dream. His vision of an urban agriculture presents an elegant solution to feeding the world, and confronts the challenge of creating sustainable urban space. The multi-disciplinary approach of his project combines environmental science, emergent materials technology and architecture to create the possibility of a radically green city. Join us as we learn more about the realities of Vertical Farms.

March 17th 2008 6:30PM
Community College of Philadelphia
Bonnell Building Auditorium BG-10
16th and Spring Garden
Entrance on 16th or 17th
Lecture Hall on First Floor Large Auditorium.

The Vertical Farm project has been featured on CNN, Wired Science, the BBC and Popular Science. To Learn more about The Vertical Farm Project you can go to www.verticalfarm.com. This is a Free event.

The Utopian Design Collective is an amorphous grouping of dreamers, technophiles, and eco-geeks whose mission it is to spread the word about the liberatory possibilities of design and technology.
DღLLZ Event Circle~//~Philadelphia

Hi I'm Nefertit and I am a member of the gal circle, DღLLZ.

Here is alittle explanation:

Dღllz is an Ive (Event Circle) gyaru-sa. A gyaru-sa is a group of gals. In the circle of girls they shop, coordinate outfits, do parapara together, and participate in other fun events. It's kind of like a club for gyaru.

Gyaru fashion is a style of dress that originated in Japan. It has many different substyles that are all a little different from each other. If you would like more information on gyaru and its subtypes, you should check out this website. They have pretty accurate descriptions and reference pictures.

Dღllz does many different events. Parapara, club events, and raves are just a few. Since we are still a fairly new gyaru-sa, we are still creating the events we plan to do! We also hang out alot.

We do have fees to pay for our events and things like t-shirts for us.

We also accept guys that dress in the styles of Sentaa Guy, Gyaru-o, and Onii-kei!

Our Rules:
~You must be between the ages of 16 and 24.
~You must live within a 2 hour travel distance of Center City, Philadelphia.
~You must be comfortable with representing Dღllz and the gyaru movement in public and we will not tolerate those who do not feel they can fulfill this requirement
~If you apply through our online e-application, you must also agree to a face to face meet with Dღllz leaders, and then 2-3 days later you will receive Dღllz decision.

If you want learn more about gyaru kei:
We have a Gal Coordinate called Queen Leopard. Queen Leopard is a service that takes you out to learn about the gal lifestyles and promo it. You can get a chance to learn where and what to buy that is gal, how to do your make up from normal to extreme, and how to do parapara. We also take guys out and teach them how to dress in Sentaa guy, Gyaru-o, or Onii-kei. The coordinates take place in Center city, Philadelphia or King of Prussia Mall. For more info click here

Hope to see you soon!

~Neffy

artstar craft bazaar
Hello All,
I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with the ART STAR CRAFT BAZAAR. Have you been a vendor there? If so, how well (or not well) did you do? What did you notice seemed to be selling best?
I'm thinking of signing up to be a vendor, but I don't have extra money to be throwing around. For me an extra $150 is a lot for a spot. But if it has a wide audience, then it may be worth it.
Also, do any of you know of any art or arts & craft events or community type affiliations in the Wilmington/Chester County/Philly area?

X-posted to a few arts & crafts communities. Sorry if anyone sees this twice.

Philly Comix Jam!

Hey All Artists, Illustrators, Cartoonists, and Dabblers in pen and ink,

I’m planning to start a Comic Jam group in Center City Philadelphia, but before I can approach a prospective venue to hold the meetings; I need to get an idea of the interest for such an event.

What is a Comic Jam, you may ask?

A typical Comic Jam unfolds something like this:

1. A group of artists gather at a bar for their monthly meeting.

2. Several sheets of blank 8” X 11” pieces of paper are at the front of the room.

3. Each artist grabs a sheet and draws as many panels as they desire.

4. Once they are finished they bring it back to the front for others to work on, take an unfinished comic, and proceed to continue the story.

5. The artist repeats number 4, while socializing and drinking with other artists.

6. Once a sheet is full that particular comic is finished and set aside.

7. All of the finished comics are published as a zine and passed out at the next meeting. All of the unfinished comics are saved and brought back to the next meeting to be completed!

For more information here are some websites of Comic Jams in other cities:

New York: http://www.houseoftwelve.com/jam/
Las Vegas: http://lvcj.livejournal.com/
Toronto: http://www.torontocomicjam.com/
Montreal: http://comixjam.blogspot.com/

It’s free! All you have to do is bring your own art supplies, and let the creative juices flow.

If you’re interested and/or you know of the perfect Center City venue email me at rudy_rox@hotmail.com or respond here and I’ll keep you informed. I’m hoping to have a meeting near the end of November (after Thanksgiving).

Spread the word!

X-post with philly_artists
