Hundreds gathered in Walsall as swimming sensation Eleanor Simmonds switched on Christmas lights.
More than a 1,000 braved the cold weather and rain at the switch-on at The Bridge, which included a 30ft illuminated tree. Double Paralympic Gold winner Eleanor helped turn on the lights at 6.30 last night.
She was joined by Walsall Mayor, councillor Tom Ansell; X Factor runners-up Journey South and Sutton Coldfield twins Oliver and James Phelps, who play the Weasley brothers in the Harry Potter films.
Eleanor, aged 13, who spoke to fans, signed autographs and posed for pictures, said: “It was really good and I saw some friends in the crowd who I hadn’t seen for months. There were lots of people who turned up and I am really proud to have been invited.”
She added: “I was a bit nervous but it is great to be back in Walsall. ” Journey South’s Andy Pemberton added: “This is the fourth lights switch-on we have been to and this is the biggest turnout.”
The evening was organised by Walsall Town Centre Management Partnership and finished with an appearance from Britain’s Got Talent dancing duo Signature. There was also a firework display.
Among those there were friends Charlotte Powell and Mia Allsopp, both 11, of Willenhall. Charlotte, who was joined by her mother Clare, said: “I had a really good time seeing the lights and performances. Brother and sister Shannon, aged seven, and Cameron Taylor, eight, from Bloxwich were also in the crowd with their auntie Leanne Potter. She said: “It is good to see everyone get together and have a good time.”
