The Practice (one-shot)

Title: The Practice
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Although she manages to keep an ounce of control, she still relishes in her ability to be free, and the two fingers at the base of his neck release sparks that trickle from his neck down his spine, dissipating mid-back.
Pairing: Peter/Elle
Spoilers: none
Notes: There seems to be a Peter/Elle drought, just one reason for this little fic. However, if you by any chance read Snapshots, there's a note regarding that series here if you're at all interested in that universe, as it's a small project I'd love to cultivate. Anyway, hope you enjoy.

(She winks, all the while a sly smile on her face.)

Epic (5/?)

Title: Epic (5/?)
Author: Bek (knX)
Rating: PG-13/R (eventual NC-17)
Word count: 2,815
Spoilers: Mostly through ‘Four Months Ago’, but all of S2 just in case
Summary: Peter begins a dark, epic journey to change the future.

Chapter 5

He opens his eyes and he sees the abandoned remnants of New York City, empty buildings all around him, and the only thing he can immediately focus on is the feel of his companion’s soft hand brushing against his as she lets go of his shoulder. He can feel the light buzz of electricity running through his body from her mere touch, and it makes him feel more alive than he has since before the outbreak.

“So,” she starts with a determined smile far too happy for the situation of being alone in an empty, dead city. “If you want to find Noah Bennet, you’re going to need my help.”

“Oh will I? Why is that?”

“Well, after the virus outbreak, I worked with one of the resistances for a little while. Until they made me leave, but that’s kind of a long story. Anyway, I worked with some people you might now. Noah and his daughter—”

“Claire?” he asks in surprise at the unexpected reminder of his dead brother. “Really? She’s with the resistance movement?”

“Yup. She’s your niece,” she reminds him, evoking a quick, harsh laugh.

“I know that, Elle. Thanks. Why did they make you leave?”

Her smile remains fixed on her face. “I told you, that’s kind of a long story, and it’s really none of your business, is it?”

“You know, it’s not fair. We’ve had this problem before—you know almost everything about me, but I know next to nothing about you. Why is that?”

She shrugs uncomfortably. “We’re not here for me, Petey.”

“Still, just give me something—”

“Do you want to try to find Bennet by yourself?” she snaps, and he backs off, raising his hands in the air in mock surrender as he stops talking. “Good. Now follow me. He’ll be this way, if he’s still in the city.”

He follows her quietly along the sidewalk towards an abandoned subway entrance. “He’s underground? Literally?”

They descend the steps in an awkward silence, walking steadily, quietly along the dark, dank subway tracks.

“You shouldn’t want to know more about me,” she whispers so quietly that he cannot be fully sure the words actually escaped her mouth, but the tears gathering in her eyes tell another story. “Most of what I know I would rather forget, and most of what I forgot, I would rather not know about at all.”

He stares at her curiously, sadly, as they continue to walk forward. “What do you mean, most of what you forgot?”

She is silent.

“Elle?”

A single tear makes its way down her cheek.

“What don’t you remember? Was it the Haitian? Elle?”

Her body tenses suddenly and her head snaps forward, sparks gathering in her battle-ready hand, and Peter follows her gaze.

“We have company,” she spits out.

He takes a protective step in front of her, seeing four guards approaching them with increasing speed. Three underlings, according to the marking on their uniforms, and one woman who is higher ranking than the others. Peter can feel somehow, somewhere inside of him, something is tingling. There is something different about the woman leading the guards. He watches her carefully as the guards come to a stop in front of them, and he mentally prepares himself for a fight.

Their darker-skinned leader steps forward. She has long, dark brown hair tied in a braid behind her head, and long eyelashes obscuring a furious fire behind her gaze. She looks beautiful, but inexplicably evil.

Elle shifts next to him as the woman smirks arrogantly.

“Well, if it isn’t pretty little Elle,” laughs the woman scornfully in a smooth, low voice. “And I got my hopes up that I would never have to lay eyes on you again.”

“The feeling was definitely mutual, Lex,” replies Elle snappily. “You’d better not take a step closer, unless you feel like dying today.”

The woman, Lex, only laughs again, vaguely gesturing to her guards and then towards Peter, who can feel something within him rearranging, and he knows that this is no ordinary villain. She has some sort of ability—he can feel it inside of him, even as he is unsure what exactly it is.

Lex takes one step closer to Elle, and the three guards move forward, effectively creating a wall between the two of them. He glances at Elle worriedly, but her attention is captured and focused on the enemy in front of her.

The three guards move slowly, cautiously, to surround him, and he can see the apathy in their faces. He does not even feel the sympathy he occasionally has for the guards; his attention is too divided between his own pending battle and Elle’s.

The guard to his left lets out a cry and rushes forward.

Peter feels the electric blast building in his hands and he prepares to let it loose.

Elle fires a powerful blast of bright blue electricity towards her opponent.

One guard gets an electric shot to the gut and goes down hard.

Lex dives to the side and rolls out of the way, rising quickly to her knees and raising her hands in the air, shooting a funneling burst of water in Elle’s direction, and suddenly the feeling Peter has inside clicks into place and makes sense.

Water. She can control water.

The second guard goes down with a flash of water hitting him square in the chest, and Lex glances over in surprise even as Elle rolls to the side and pushes her way back up.

The third guard gets a sharp punch across the face and is flung across the room, smacking against the floor as Elle’s second electric discharge slams into her opponent’s chest and throws her to the ground.

Peter rushes over quickly as Elle takes a menacing step forward.

The woman gasps for breath before passing out into unconsciousness, and Elle disturbingly smirks, hovering one hand above the woman’s body, electricity shooting out in sparks between her fingers in preparation.

“Elle!” he shouts immediately, running forward as she spares him a passing glance.

“What’s up, Pete?”

The sparks light the air again, and he swallows hard.

“Come on, let’s go. This fight is over, Elle.”

She pauses and turns to face him, genuinely confused. “I was just going to finish her off real fast.”

He stares at her numbly. “Elle...no, you can’t do that. Don’t kill her. Let’s just go, okay? We don’t...we’re not murderers. Okay?”

She sighs audibly and throws an angry glare in Lex’s direction. “Sure. Fine, whatever. But you’ll regret that when she just pops up again some time—it’ll be your fault, not mine.”

He places a hand on her shoulder and forces her to look him in the eyes. “If she does, we’ll fight her again. We’ll kill her if we have to, but we won’t murder anyone while they’re unconscious. These are my rules. Do you understand?”

She shrugs and vaguely gestures in the direction they were previously walking. “Bennet shouldn’t be too far away now.”

He watches her as she starts to walk away and sighs, briefly accepting that his point hardly made it across. He walks away from the bodies lying unconscious on the dirty ground. Squadrons of guards roaming the land are not uncommon these days, so he had anticipated some sort of skirmish, but not this quickly.

“How did you meet that woman?” he asks after several long moments of silence.

“While I was working for my father.”

“Is that all? Seemed like she’s not exactly in your fan club.”

She laughs, and it is a strange sound coming from her. “I met her while the Company still had prisoners—before Adam freed them all. We fought while she was trying to escape, and we’ve had a few run-ins since then. Yeah, I guess she doesn’t like me a whole lot. Strange.”

He smirks. “Yeah, very strange. Who couldn’t like you?”

She shrugs, thoroughly dumbfounded, and gestures further ahead towards a small building, very well hidden underneath the ground. The subway system is dark enough to obscure it from prying eyes. Easy access to a major transportation route, food, water, and one of the main hubs of enemy activities—Bennet could definitely have chosen a worse spot.

They cautiously approach the dark door, and he can see how many buildings there actually are, like a web of small apartments underneath the ground—undoubtedly, not all of them are occupied, making the right one difficult to find.

“This way,” she whispers as they continue towards one specific building, indistinguishable from all the rest.

Elle steps up to the door and knocks slowly three times, rapidly twice, and once more after a beat.

“A secret knock?” Peter questions with a bemused smirk.

He can hear sudden movement on the other side of the door and prepares himself for whoever awaits them. He knows that there must be some device on the other side of the door that allows those on the inside to be able to see who is arriving, and he cannot help but wonder how welcome he will be.

The door is thrown open and Claire Bennet runs into his arms and wraps him in an embrace.

“Peter! Oh my god, we all thought you were dead! This is incredible! Oh Peter, I’ve—we’ve all missed you so much...”

He wraps his arms around her and holds her closely. “Claire...I’ve missed you too.”

They pull apart before Claire notices Elle hovering awkwardly behind them. Her smile fades slightly and she glances back and forth between Elle and Peter.

“Elle, hi, it’s good to see you too,” Claire offers, slightly less exuberantly, smile faltering. “And...you’re here with Peter. That’s great.”

Peter clears his throat abruptly. “Listen, Claire, I need to talk to your, uh, dad. Is he around?”

Nathan is dead, Peter.

He jerks back, flinching as Claire’s thoughts simply appear, floating heavily into his mind, and he thinks he really can see some of his brother in her. The memories assaulting his conscience evoke powerful memories, only strengthening his resolve to move forward with what he must do.

The words out of her mouth are different. “Yeah, sure, come in.”

Claire shuts the door behind them and leads them into the surprisingly roomy building. It is dark on the inside, but still light enough to be able to see. The walls are painted a dull off-white color, and the carpeting is gray and boring. Claire leads them through three locked doors and down a set of stairs hidden behind a bookcase, of all things, and Peter is almost tempted to laugh at the complexity of it all.

A final door slides open, and Claire laughs slightly. “I know, it’s kind of ridiculous, but we have to be careful. I’m sure you know how it is.”

“Yeah, of course,” he agrees with a nod before following her into the next room.

The room appears to be some sort of library, walls lined with hundreds of books. Peter takes a long, slow look across the room and takes everything in. He sees a familiar face sitting at a table in the center of a room, and Noah Bennet glances over his shoulder in surprise.

Two young people Peter has never seen before are sitting beside Bennet at the table. One is a college-aged black girl, and the other is a young white man around the same age, blond hair sticking up in different directions on his head.

“Claire, I thought I told you—” Bennet stops talking as he eyes his visitors, and slowly comes to his feet. “Peter Petrelli. I should’ve known you were going to show up sooner or later.”

Peter shrugs and nods. “It’s been a while.”

Bennet nods before giving Elle a surprisingly warm, if slightly hesitant, smile. “Elle,” he greets. “I was wondering about you as well. How are you?”

Elle smiles back, but hers is somewhat sad. “Hey, you. I’m just dandy. How are things around this old place?”

Bennet steps forward and places a comforting hand on her shoulder, and he hesitates before embracing her in an awkward, welcoming hug.

Peter watches the scene in front of him unfold in confusion, and Claire shifts, clearly irked, to his side.

Bennet pulls away and smiles at Peter again. “It’s good to see you, Peter. It really is. Allow me to introduce a couple of my associates here. Monica Dawson, Johnny Kingsley, meet Peter Petrelli.”

The two young people—kids, really—step up and they exchange handshakes quickly before Bennet shows Peter into his office. The two of them are alone, with Elle fending for herself in the other room.

“Mr. Bennet,” starts Peter.

“Please, call me Noah.”

“Okay, Noah. Here’s the thing. I’m looking for someone, and I think you might know something about where she could be.”

Bennet sits back in his chair and listens as Peter explains the extent of his journey so far, from waiting for Caitlin and slumming around in Ireland, running into Elle, the strange occurrences at the deportee warehouse, his brief reunion with Hiro in Japan, and finally, their journey through the sewer and subway system before arriving at Bennet’s door.

Bennet sits back thoughtfully. “I’m not going to lie to you, Peter. I haven’t heard anything about this yet, but I know some people who might be able to help.”

Peter raises a cynical eyebrow. “And the catch is...?”

Bennet laughs knowingly. “Here’s the thing. I’ll do what I can to find her, but I need your help with something. I respect what you’re trying to do—however, I have to accept the reality that this life we’re all stuck in might never change.”

“You’re saying I might fail?”

Bennet’s smile fades slightly. “Confidence is a good thing, Peter, but don’t overdo it. Failure is always a possibility, especially in today’s world. I need you to help me. You’ve met the Haitian before, yes?”

He frowns in response, lips pursed tightly. “Sure, we go way back. He’s erased my memory once or twice.”

“I know he may not exactly be your favorite person of all time, but he is currently in Adam Monroe’s custody. I don’t know how much information you have on this, but Adam experiments on people with abilities. It’s truly sickening, some of the things he does.”

“Kind of like the Company?” Peter asks stiffly.

“I’m not saying it was right when we did it either. Adam is using the Haitian’s blood to manufacture objects and possibly weapons with the capability of suppressing a person’s abilities. This could render you powerless in your pursuit, Peter. Think about it.”

Peter sighs deeply but nods. “Do you know where he’s being held?”

Bennet quickly gives him all of the information about one of Adam’s supposedly secret experimental facilities. “Are you in, Peter?”

“Yeah. I’ll get him out. But you have to come through for me, Noah. The future of the world depends on this.”

As Peter turns to go, Bennet rises and grabs his arm.

“Listen, Peter, one last thing.” Bennet quickly glances up at the door to make sure it is still closed. “I don’t know what the whole story with you and Elle is, but there are a few things you should know about her.”

“Yeah, I already—”

“She’s not the most...stable person. She had a rough childhood, no real family—the way her father treated her was despicable. It has definitely affected her.”

“I can tell. Really, I—”

“Peter, I don’t know how it happened, but I have always sympathized with her plight. With everything that happened over the past year, I came to appreciate her, and I guess I grew to – love her almost like a daughter. Or at least as a good friend. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

Peter opens his mouth, but no words come out as he processes what Bennet is saying.

“If you hurt her, you will regret it. If you don’t protect her, you will suffer. I don’t care how many abilities you have. I have always taken my family very seriously, and I always will. Is that clear?”

“Yes sir,” Peter finds himself responding immediately, slightly intimidated by the older man’s powerful stare.

Bennet offers a thin smile before gesturing towards the door. “Good. Let’s rejoin the others, and I’ll explain what’s going on.”

Peter follows Bennet through the door to meet with the rest of the small group. Claire and Elle have moved to opposite sides of the room, and Peter vaguely wonders if it is some sort of sibling-type rivalry. The other kids, Johnny and Monica, are sitting on the couch, quietly talking to each other. Everyone looks up as the two men reenter the room.

Peter shoves his hands in his pockets and looks over at Bennet, who simply smiles.

“Well, everyone. We have ourselves a plan.”

TBC...

A/N: Heeey, so yeah, I still have another several chapters written after this. Sorry, I meant to post it earlier! School has been whooping my ass lately. In fact, I have to go finish a 16 page research paper due tomorrow...haha, it’s gonna be a late night. I’m stocking up on coffee and energy drinks.

Anybody else in school? High school, college, beyond? I’m a junior in college right now. It mostly sucks when I procrastinate and have to pull all-nighters like tonight...blah. Lame.

Anyway, thanks for reading! :-) There’s some smutastic fun coming up in the very near future, so...yay! Maybe. Lol. That energy drink is kicking in already...

Epic (3-4/?)

Title: Epic (3-4/?)
Author: Bek (knX)
Rating: PG-13/R (eventual NC-17)
Word count: 2,877
Spoilers: Mostly through ‘Four Months Ago’, but all of S2 just in case
Summary: Peter begins a dark, epic journey to change the future.

Chapter 3

They hide together quietly in the shadows.

The air is cool in the mid-morning, and his skin is tingling with strong tension and anticipation. This could be it. This could be the day his nightmare finally ends.

The fresh air blows in from the ocean, and it smells like salt and seagulls. The small ocean-side port is connected to a decontamination zone located in an abandoned warehouse. If everything goes according to plan, this is where they will take the deportees, and this is where he will find Caitlin.

He leans against a cold brick wall and stares blankly ahead of him.

His companion mimics his movements and turns her head to study him closely.

They sit in silence as the sun rises high above them in the sky, but they still remain hidden behind the darkness of the shadows. The scenery is eerily similar to the outdoor warehouse he woke up in with no memories so long ago. The large warehouse is spotted with dozens of large metallic crates.

“So, this is it, huh?”

He sighs, thinking it was only a matter of time until she started talking. “This is a stakeout, Elle. We’re supposed to be quiet.”

She laughs quietly. “I know what a stakeout is, Petey. I was just making a point. This could be the day, you know?”

He shrugs, finding himself unwilling to produce enough energy to be bothered by her now, so close to the end. “Sure.”

Her eyes are bright even in the darkness. “I’m glad. It’s about time, really. There’s not a whole lot to live for these days.”

He finally raises his head to look over at her curiously. “What do you mean?”

“You know. Didn’t you lose people to the virus?”

He sighs deeply and contemplates her words. “My brother, Nathan. He died in the first outbreak. Caitlin was gone. My family was destroyed. Yeah, I lost a lot, but that’s exactly why I need to go back and stop it.”

Her smile is eerie, and she nods sadly, speaking softly. “I never really had anyone to lose in the first place...”

He stares at her, and even though he still cannot bring himself to fully trust her intentions, he feels a swell of pity blooming in his heart for her. He wonders what her childhood must have been like, spending more than sixteen years confined and experimented on within the confines of Company.

He shivers.

The loud blaring of a horn in the distance directs their attention towards the water where an old ship is slowly but steadily approaching. They both turn to watch it sail its way in, and Elle takes a step closer to him, and even if he does not want to be, he is aware of her presence every second.

Her smile fades and her eyes turn sad. “I guess this is the end of our adventure, Pete. Let’s go find your girlfriend.”

She immediately skips off towards the warehouse, and he just shakes his head in wonder.

He can see the deportees being brought off the boat, but not well enough to make out faces. He can see the dark black tunics with bright gold symbols on them signifying the presence of Adam’s personal army.

His body tenses in preparation for a fight. He follows closely behind Elle through the shadows.

A group of guards is watching the deportees like they are prisoners. After the outbreaks had died down, travel became safer, but still rare. It was common practice for any country to perform a decontamination process on the admitted individuals, just in case.

He keeps his eyes focused on one guard in particular, just waiting for the moment the man is alone.

He searches desperately through the group of deportees, but he cannot find Caitlin anywhere. The group is composed of mostly older men and small children. Caitlin is not there, and his heart falls into the pit of his suddenly cold stomach.

The guard starts walking on his own, not paying very close attention as he patrols in the darkness. Peter glances at Elle, and as soon as the guard is out of eyeshot they immediately rush forward.

The guard is about to yell out in surprise when Peter rears back and punches him hard across the face. Without a sound, the guard collapses, unconscious, in a heap on the ground.

Elle looks at him with a smile. “There are some small rooms in the back. We can take him there. No one will hear a thing.”

He just swallows hard and nods, unable to fend off the sinking feeling he has about this entire situation. He waves his hand in the air, and the man’s limp body lifts up off the ground, and he guides them to a back room at the end of the dingy warehouse.

The door shuts behind them with finality, and the man shifts slightly, beginning to come to, slumped against the wall.

Elle folds her arms across her chest and takes a step forward as the man coughs slightly, but keeps his eyes closed, one small drop of blood splattering and sinking into his dark uniform.

Elle raises a finger and points, and before Peter can stop her, a small electric charge escapes and jolts the man awake, hard, and he gasps in shock.

“Elle,” starts Peter warningly.

“Tell me where the girl is and I might let you live,” she threatens the terrified guard lying on the ground.

“Th-the girl?” he stutters. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“Oh, I think you do.” Her voice is almost sing-song as she kneels on the ground to reach his eye-level. “And I think you want to tell me.”

His eyes are wide and his body is shaking with fear. “I—I don’t know anything, I swear!”

Peter hears the sizzling shock before he sees the blue electricity tearing its way through the guard’s body, screams echoing off the metallic walls.

“Stop, please! Please, I swear, all I know is that they stopped the boat on the way here and took someone off. If it was your girl, she could be anywhere by now. I don’t know anything else, I swear!”

Her eyes are cold and menacing and in her hand is a growing mass of pure electricity. “Why is it that I don’t believe you?”

Peter shuts his eyes for only a moment and as he shudders he hears the tortured man’s voice desperately crying out in his mind.

That’s all I know! I don’t know anything else, I swear! I don’t know!

“Elle,” he cautions quietly, wondering if this is how she tortured and killed Ricky, Caitlin’s brother, and he suddenly feels even more disgusted. “He doesn’t know anything.”

She raises an eyebrow at him curiously and just shrugs, careless, and the electricity gathering in her hand disappears as quickly as it had arrived with a wisp of smoke. “Whatever.”

He sighs and gently prods her out of the building and into the cool morning air, out of earshot of the wounded guard and any other wandering guards in the area.

Elle frowns at him, eyes far from the innocence he has almost gotten used to seeing. “He wasn’t telling us everything,” she snaps, annoyed.

“Believe me, he told us everything he knows. Look, Adam must have known who she was and had her taken off the boat.” He sighs and looks away from her. “This was my one chance...He was right, she could be anywhere in the world right now, and I have no fucking clue.”

He can see her annoyance fade out of the corner of his eye, and her face falls sadly. She tries to place an optimistic smile on her face. “Well hey, I’m sure we’ll be able to find her. Maybe we could go poke around in America? I know some people over there who might be able to help.”

“No, I’m not going to America. Not yet, anyway.”

Her face falls yet again in disappointment at the rejection of her idea, but he still has too many powerful memories of love and loss from his former home country. A country utterly devastated by the virus, as it was the home of the original outbreaks. A country he would to almost anything to go back and save.

“I have an old friend I have to see first.”

She tilts her head to the side curiously. “Who? And where?”

“Hiro Nakamura. If he’s still alive, he’ll be hiding in Japan. I think I know where I can find him.”

“When do you want to leave?”

He hesitates, still wary about where her true loyalties lie, but somehow her decision to stay with him on the beginning of this journey makes him glad.

He reaches forward and lightly touches her shoulder, and he can feel the electricity coursing through her veins.

“How about right now?”

He closes his eyes, and when he opens them again he is staring into Elle’s cold blue eyes and they are surrounded by blooming cherry blossoms.

Chapter 4

Elle blinks and blankly looks around at the beautiful sight surrounding them.

He takes the majesty of it all in. The smell of the flower blossoms, the feel of the breeze against his skin, and for a brief moment everything is at peace.

Elle shifts uncomfortably in the silence. “Um, Peter? What exactly are we doing here?”

His peaceful state of mind is broken, and reality quickly sets in. “Welcome to Japan.”

He tells her that, like most other countries of the world, after the virus spread, large cities were quickly broken apart. Most people either took to the abandoned streets or risked being near other people in small villages. After everything that happened, Hiro would be nowhere near a town’s population, regardless of the size—for his own safety. Adam undoubtedly had a search team dedicated to looking for the young time traveler.

“I know Hiro. If he was hiding anywhere, he would have picked something meaningful, I think.”

She just blinks again. “Sooo...what, we’re supposed to frolic through the forest and look for the little Japanese guy? I don’t get it.”

He just sighs. “No, I guess you don’t get it.”

They start walking, and Elle quietly pouts as they continue to walk through the majestic fields of glorious trees, somehow untouched by the devastation inflicted by the Shanti virus. They go deeper and deeper into the forest, and Elle gets more and more sarcastic about the entire experience.

“Are we there yet? How much longer?”

He refrains from rolling his eyes and lets her vent about how even though everything may seem perfect in the beauty of the forest, nothing is truly this beautiful, and there is always something ugly under the surface when he finally spies their destination.

“There,” he whispers, pointing through the trees. “You see that?”

She immediately focuses, body snapping to attention instead of the sullen posture she had taken to in the midst of her rant. He carefully points towards a small cabin made of wood, hidden within the camouflage of the trees, and he smiles. Hiro certainly had picked a fitting spot—beautiful, yet perfect for his needs.

They quietly approach the front door of the cabin, and he waves Elle down as she appears to be preparing herself for a fight. “Hiro’s a friend,” he warns. “No shocking him, okay? He’s a good man.”

“Oh, sure. Like I’ll trust some random guy? Come on, Petey.” She childishly rolls her eyes at him, but he once again ignores her and steps forward, steadily knocking on the wooden door three times. She steps forward as well, standing right next to him in front of Hiro’s dwelling place.

The door is old and creaky as it opens slowly, revealing nothing more than dark shadows for a moment before a haggard-looking sword-bearing Hiro Nakamura emerges.

Elle tenses at his side as Hiro raises his sword in the air.

“Peter Petrelli. This is a surprise.”

“Hiro. It’s been a while.” His voice trails off awkwardly.

Hiro sighs deeply, thoughtfully as he cautiously lowers his sword. “It has indeed, Peter. A long time. Much has changed since then. What brings you to Japan?”

“I needed to talk to you. I have a few questions, if you have time.”

Hiro smiles sadly and sheathes his long samurai sword, which bears the mark of Adam’s military force. “I have time, Peter Petrelli. I have been waiting a long time for someone to find me. I never thought it would have been you. Please, come inside.”

Hiro glances at Elle uneasily, but as Peter stands his ground beside her, Hiro leads them into his house. They sit around a small table in his kitchen, quietly waiting as he pours them some tea.

Elle leans closer to Peter and smiles widely, whispering, “How cute is he with his little sword? I love that!”

“I have been waiting for a long time,” Hiro starts again. “I came to believe that Adam would have come looking for me to end our feud once and for all. I am surprised I have lived this long. Now, you said you have some questions for me?”

Peter nods quickly, as the hot tea scalds its way down his throat. He sets the cup down on the table. “I have to go back and set things right, Hiro.”

Hiro’s eyes narrow in concern. “Can you feel that something is wrong with the space/time continuum? I have been trying to go back for some time, but I have a bad feeling that no good would come of it. I can sense it.”

“Not yet,” agrees Peter. “But soon. That’s what I wanted to talk to you about.”

Peter explains everything about his accidental journey through time with Caitlin, and how he must find her before history can be salvaged.

“I think that once I find her I’ll be able to go back and change this.”

Hiro nods deeply, brow furrowing in concentration. “You are doing the right thing, Peter, as long as you fulfill your promise. You must go back and fix history. You can stay in the future for no man or woman, for no selfish reason.” His eyes linger on the quiet Elle, not paying attention and looking rather bored across the table.

Peter glances at her and he can feel the molecules around him shift when she is suddenly frozen in time, unmoving, and the leaves outside the window cease falling. He looks at Hiro curiously.

“Why did you do that?”

“I trust you, Peter,” Hiro smiles kindly. “I do not trust this woman, but I believe in your choices—you are the one who can save us all.”

Peter frowns. “Me? But I’m not the only one who can time travel. I’m just trying to—”

“I am dying, Peter,” interrupts Hiro quietly. “I have been for some time. I contracted the virus—don’t worry, you and the girl are safe from me, but I will be gone soon. When I die, Peter, you are the world’s only hope.”

Before Peter can respond, Elle starts breathing again, and the world comes back to life outside the house. Peter just stares, wide-eyed at his old friend.

“Hiro...”

“I do not know where this woman, Caitlin, could be. Go to America and find Noah Bennet—he may be able to help you. He should be hiding in New York City.”

Hiro rises from the table, and Peter and Elle wordlessly follow him back to the door.

Elle immediately steps out, but Hiro places a firm hand on Peter’s shoulder with a smile unexpected from a man who just confessed he was on his own deathbed.

“It was good to see you again before I die, Peter Petrelli. Good luck with your quest. You can change history.”

With a deep bow, Hiro returns back to the tranquility of his home, and Peter turns to Elle, who is sporting a confident smile.

“What a snooze fest that was, huh? I told you we should have gone straight to America.”

Peter laughs quietly. “No, I’m glad we came here. It was important.”

She just rolls her eyes and they slowly walk away from the tiny cabin buried in the woods. “Not worth it.”

He glances around, and the world surrounding him is majestic. “What, you don’t think this is beautiful?”

She gives her surroundings a cursory glance and shrugs. “Sure. Whatever.”

“No, really,” he grins, almost amused. “Compared to New York City?”

Her eyes are cold and kind of sad. “I don’t think any of this is beautiful.”

He pauses in his tracks, but follows her closely, not saying a word for several minutes as they continue to wander aimlessly.

“Are we gonna teleport out of this place or what?”

He stares at her, amused now, and says nothing.

She sighs deeply and takes a slow look at the world around her. Very slowly, she turns back to him, corners of her mouth tugging into a frown. “Fine, I guess it’s kind of not ugly. Can we go now?”

He just smiles and her blush makes him feel warm, even as she playfully shocks him as he brings them to the United States of America.

Chapter 5

tbc...

A/N: Sorry for the slight delay, but hey look, two short chapters! The story’s gonna start picking up in a big way soon. Thanks to everyone who’s reading, hope you’re enjoying so far!

So, question: do y’all watch any other shows? I’ve been running out of time lately, unfortunately. Used to watch Alias and Veronica Mars, sometimes Gilmore Girls (Milo!). I still watch Lost when I get the chance. And Heroes, of course.

...and maybe sometimes Gossip Girl. ;-)

Epic (2/?)

Title: Epic (2/?)
Author: Bek (knX)
Rating: PG-13/R (eventual NC-17)
Word count: 1,383
Spoilers: Mostly through ‘Four Months Ago’, but all of S2 just in case
Summary: Peter begins a dark, epic journey to change the future.

Chapter 2

He can sense her following him.

She is everywhere, and she is nowhere.

She was gone when he woke up in the morning, but he can still smell her. He can hear her footsteps, but whenever he turns around, she is gone. He is tempted to make himself invisible just to catch her in the act, like this is all some sort of game to her, but after the daylight starts to disappear, he is ready to forget about her.

He has some serious work ahead of him, but not yet.

He walks into another bar—a different one, this time. One of the few things this dark, empty post-virus world is never short of is bars and booze.

He takes several straight shots quickly, ready for a quick escape for the night. When he cannot feel, he can pretend he is in a happier place and time.

His head is already spinning when she shows up at the barstool next to him. She has cleaned up somewhere, but is wearing the same clothes as the night before. She smiles innocently, eyes bright and sparkling. He turns to stare at her, and she is the one beautiful thing in a very ugly world.

He shakes his head to clear those alcohol-induced thoughts away. “So, are you a professional stalker now?”

She grins brightly. “No. Are you a professional drinker now?”

He turns away and stares into his glass.

“Really, Petey. Do you do this every night? That’s kind of sad.”

She seems genuinely curious, almost child-like, but he just concentrates on ignoring her questions.

“Come on, Pete. What the hell are you doing here?”

He swallows hard and turns to face her again. The world around him sways slightly, and he reaches a hand out to the bar to steady himself. “What have you been up to since the virus hit, Elle? Have you been looking for me the entire time?”

She smirks. “Don’t flatter yourself, Peter. I haven’t done a whole lot. The Company fell apart, my dad died, and I joined one of the resistances for a little while after the virus broke out. Ever since then, I’ve been avoiding or killing Adam’s guards. And then I found you, and here we are.”

He blinks and nods at her blunt honestly. “Huh.”

“Your turn now. Why are you here? Why haven’t you fixed everything yet?”

He shrugs, and for the second time in two days she inspires him to violate his better judgment. He blames the alcohol.

“After I escaped from the Company, I met someone. We accidently traveled to the future, but I came back without her. I need to find her...I can’t go back yet. I have to fix the space/time continuum before I can fix the past.”

The words sound silly and slurred as they leave his mouth, but he knows it makes sense. If he had changed the past before, Caitlin would have been lost forever to time. He has to rescue her and bring her back before he can stop Adam, otherwise there is no telling what could happen. The universe could implode upon itself for all he knows.

She is smiling, and he is confused. “What’s her name?”

He does not answer.

“Do you love her?”

He swallows hard, thinking of the woman he hardly knew, the woman whose face he cannot quite recall, the woman who he is sure he felt something for, but has no pictures of.

She grins and hugs him again tightly, releasing him quickly this time. “That is so romantic, like a fairy tale! It has to be true love if you want to go through time for someone. True love—it’s so epic!”

He smiles slightly, and he can imagine the idea of Caitlin in his mind when he shuts his eyes. She had saved him—believed in him, even, when he had no clue about who he was. She had loved him when he had no identity, and he had let her down when he abandoned her in a hopeless future.

Epic? Maybe.

“You know,” she points out. “Adam’s guards really want to find you. You should probably be careful, so you can rescue her.”

Somewhere in the back of his foggy brain, he registers the oddity of her statement. He wants to ask how exactly she knows what Adam’s guards could possibly want, but decides to hold off. She will reveal who she is loyal to, and he will have to remain wary of her potential betrayal.

“Caitlin was supposed to be arriving in Ireland within the next couple days,” he quickly changes the subject. “I’m going to find her and bring her back. Everything will be better. Once I find her, I can fix all this. I know it.”

She just smiles kindly at him. “I think you’ve had a little too much to drink, Petey. Time for you to go back, okay?”

She grips his arm, and he can feel the individual hairs on his arm stand on end, drawn to her skin. Her touch feels electric, and he knows she is not even trying to shock him; it is the natural state of her existence.

She starts to help him stumble out the door, but as soon as they are out of the bar he grabs her shoulder and teleports them back to the ratty motel room in the middle of nowhere and smiles at her surprise as the world instantly changes around them.

She gasps and hits him on the arm. “You have to warn me before you do that!”

He smiles, and the steady buzz is beginning to wear off as he takes a seat on the couch before realizing his mistake. She plops herself down next to him, body bouncing up off the cushion as she scoots closer to him.

“Hey Petey,” she whispers conspiratorially, a slight smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. “Can we...?”

He blinks and stares at her for a moment before noticing her hand slightly extended outward. “Elle...no. Just, no.”

Her hopeful eyes immediately cast downward, and it is one of the saddest sights he has ever seen. Her jaw tenses to hide the sad quivering of rejection, and his greater mistake is allowing himself to feel pity for her.

He sighs deeply and shakes his head, feeling as though he is dealing with a small child who just wants one cookie before bedtime. “Okay, fine. But just a little one. And only once, okay?”

Her eyes immediately brighten as she grins and turns to face him, carefully raising her hand into the air.

He remembers how it goes, and slowly raises an unsteady hand to meet hers.

Their hands hover in the air, mere inches away from each other, and he can feel it already.

The air between them cackles with building electricity before it sparkles and snaps, sending a sharp spark from the tips of his fingers through his entire body, and his hand jerks away in pain.

She happily hugs him again as he shakes his hand out, and her hands run across his chest before she pulls away.

He catches his breath, heart thudding irregularly fast in his ribcage, and leans back into the hard cushion of the ugly brown couch.

“Elle,” he starts carefully after a deep, calming breath. “I’m looking for Caitlin tomorrow. Things are going to be a little different. Less bars, less drinking, more fighting.”

She just continues to grin widely. “Petey, are you asking me out on a date?”

He forces a harsh laugh. “No. I was going to say you should probably leave the country. I won’t be the safest guy to be around for the next few days.”

She just tilts her head to the side, and stands to make her way to the bed. “I’d rather be with you than anywhere else. You make me feel safe.”

He blinks, confused, and is about to respond, but she lies down in the dark, and maybe the shock plus the drinks were too much, as he feels a little dizzy while he lies down. He is asleep in moments.

That night, he awakens in a cold sweat, breathing heavily from a nightmare barely tugging at the edge of his consciousness that he cannot quite remember.

TBC...

Chapter 3

A/N: This chapter was a bit short, but they’ll get longer eventually.
Thanks to y’all who reviewed so far! This is my first Heroes fic, may as well try to get to know each other a little, right?
Question: What was your favorite moment on Heroes? Mine would be...Shirtless!Peter. Mmm, yes. :-D And of course, the Peter/Elle scenes were so much fun. I hope they get some more at some point.

Anyway, thanks for reading! More on the way soonish.
Epic (1/?)

Title: Epic (1/?)
Author: Bek (knX)
Rating: PG-13/R (eventual NC-17)
Word count: 1,776 (this part)
Spoilers: Mostly through 'Four Months Ago', but all of S2 just in case
Summary: Peter begins a dark, epic journey to change the future.
Disclaimer: I don't own Heroes. NBC does.

Prologue

He can feel their cold, deadly eyes on him.

He motions for the bartender to pour him another drink. The bartender regards him warily, glancing back towards the small bar’s other occupants, but obliges. The amber liquid sloshes into his glass.

He does not need any genetic modifications to hear the heavy thuds from the boots of armed men approaching him from behind.

There are two of them, each taking a seat on either side of him. He continues to stare into his glass, aware every second of how the bartender slowly, knowingly backs away.

“You know why we’re here?” the one on the left asks.

He shrugs a nonchalant shoulder. “Sure.”

The one on the right shifts impatiently, annoyed at his indifference. “You’re going to have to come with us. We can do this the easy way or—”

“Or the hard way?” He chuckles humorlessly. “I think I’ll pick that one.”

The guards look at each other, obviously unused to being spoken to in such a manner. He watches as both of their hands simultaneously reach down to the holsters on their belts.

He hardly even feels an adrenaline surge any more. The second their hands reach their weapons, he pushes himself back from the bar to a standing positions. The guards rise, and he immediately steals their weapons through the air into his grasp.

The guards stand motionless now in alarm.

He smiles. Too easy.

One step to the right, and a powerful punch to the gut sends the guard smashing into the wall across the bar. The second guard has no idea what hits him, but lets out a surprised yelp as his body lifts off the ground and flies out the door at the entrance in an unconscious heap.

Too easy.

The bartender is hovering at the end of the bar, but he risks a slight smile and a nod.

Peter nods, reaching for his glass, still untouched on the bar. He drinks it in one quick gulp, embracing the burning sensation as it makes its way down his throat.

He tosses a few extra bills on the table and leaves the dark, smoky bar, past the unconscious man slumped in a bloody mess at the front door.

He looks around into the night and sighs heavily, waiting for the liquor to settle in his stomach and help him forget.

This is his life now. Running and hiding by day, drinking away the nightmares at night.

He walks forward into the cold evening air.

Chapter 1

Ninety-seven percent of the world’s population obliterated.

Body bags, gas masks, decontamination chambers.

Certain cities put entirely on lockdown.

Huge cities completely wiped out. Only small, scattered villages could survive. Others who lived roamed with their families—if anyone was left.

Trust no one.

Anyone could be an enemy. The enemy. The one man with the power to take over a dying world.

There was only one man whose blood could be manufactured into a mass cure in return for a pledge of loyalty. One man who was crafty enough to create a powerful army to rule his empire.

Anyone suspected of disloyalty or treason was exterminated.

Anyone considered a threat to the Empire was destroyed. Many of those who survived the virus were those with special genetic mutations; those with special abilities.

Resistance movements sprung up across the world. Most were brutally crushed and extinguished.

The world has changed drastically in merely one year. Alliances shifted, new enemies were born out of the ashes of a burning world, and unexpected surprises lurked around every corner, ready to disrupt the unstable equilibrium maintained by the living.

There were very few who still maintained hope for the future—and they based their hope in the ability to change the past.

They believed in the ability to salvage history and save the world.

~~

The smooth liquid burns its way down his throat and it warms him.

Another night, another random Irish bar in a near-deserted town.

There are no guards this time. They are fairly easy to identify while in uniform—long black shirts with the golden symbol etched into the front, light gray pants, combat boots, all contributing to an easy, quick flow of movement.

Most were equipped with pistols; some shot real bullets, others shot the brand new inhibitors which could restrict the abilities of a genetically enhanced being, as he had found out on an unfortunate occasion not long ago.

He is waiting. He has a goal in mind, but it is only a matter of arriving there—and surviving until he can accomplish the mission he has set out to do. He must set things right, but there are certain objectives that must be accomplished first.

The door chimes gently as someone else enters the near-empty bar. He does not even raise his head to look around.

Light footsteps approach him as he absently swirls the hard liquid in his slightly-stained glass. The patron takes a seat next to him.

The first thing that hits him is that she smells the same. He does not look at her, but he knows who it is. The last memories he has of her revolve around torture and murder, but after the virus had broken out alliances had shifted and deteriorated so rapidly that he is not even surprised at how worried he isn’t.

“Hey there,” she greets, and he can hear the flirty smile in her voice.

“Elle,” he responds, taking a long drink. “Are you here to kill me or torture me? Or is it kidnapping today?”

“Oh, Petey, don’t be silly,” she laughs happily, drawing the attention of the bartender and the few patrons scattered throughout the bar. Laughter is a sound rarely heard in today’s post-virus world. “Aren’t you happy to see me?”

He raises an eyebrow and glances at her. She has not changed at all. Her eyes are bright blue and deceptively innocent, and her blond hair attracts all of the light in the room and at first glance she almost looks like an angel, but he knows better.

“Not really. I’d rather be alone right now.”

“Well, maybe we can be alone together?”

He frowns, and quickly downs what is left in his glass and throws the money he owes the bartender onto the table. “I actually have to go. It’s been fun catching up. Have a nice life, Elle.”

She looks hurt as he rises, but before he knows it she is following him out the door into the early evening.

“You know, Petey—”

“Don’t call me that.”

“You know, we’re kind of like allies now, did you know that?”

He sighs and starts walking away quickly, but she simply follows behind him. “No, Elle, we’re not like allies. We’re not anything.”

Her slight smile is visible out of the corner of his eye. “Okay. But we’re kind of like allies against Adam, now that he’s taken over the world and all that. We all go back so far together, too! It’s a pretty good story, I think. Kind of like a movie.”

He keeps walking in the direction of his cheap, ratty motel off the side of an old dirt road. “Sure, whatever,” he responds, not quite annoyed, but more than bothered by her tagging along on his walk.

“You know,” she continues. “Most people think you’re dead.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Hey, Petey, I have a question,” she starts, eyes shifting over towards him innocently.

He quickly weighs the pros and cons of going invisible and making a quick escape.

“I’ve been looking for you for a while—you’re kind of a hard guy to find. But I wanted to ask you something.”

He sighs again. “What do you want, Elle?”

She falls in step next to him. “Well, the world sort of sucks now. Why don’t you just go back in time and fix everything?”

He hesitates and glances at her. “I will. I just can’t yet.”

He keeps walking, and she keeps following, and he just wants her to leave him alone.

“Don’t you, uh, have somewhere you should go? To sleep?”

She shrugs. “Not really. Do you?”

Against his better judgment, he knows he is already caught in his own trap. “Uh, yeah.”

She looks at him, and he can feel her eyes on him, and he knows he is done for when he glances over and makes eye contact, and even though he knows the truth about how truly sadistic she can be, with her eyes wide and watery she somehow looks too innocent to simply abandon along a foreign road.

They arrive outside the cheap, near broken-down motel, and he sighs deeply. “I guess if you need a place to stay for the night, you can crash here. Just one night though—”

“Oh, Petey!” she squeals happily and he tenses as she throws her arms around him. “I thought you’d never ask! That’s so sweet of you!”

He cringes as she just embraces him tightly, and it is exactly the same as it was when he was trapped within the confines of the Company. Her touch is electric, and he can feel the static building up already, prickly on his skin, and he tries to stretch out and break her hug.

“Okay, Elle. You’ve gotta let go now so I can open the door.”

She obliges, and they enter his rented room. One small, dark room with a double bed and a tiny couch in the corner. She immediately bolts away from him and practically dives with a childish glee onto the bed.

He just sighs again and shakes his head. “Fine, I’ll take the couch,” he mumbles, stepping forward in the dark before glancing back at her quickly. “Oh, Elle?”

Her eyes snap over to him and she listens with rapt attention.

“No shocking me without my permission, okay? Promise me that.” He almost feels like he is speaking to a small, slightly sadistic child.

She grins widely. “Maybe we can do it later?”

He shakes his head. “Not without my permission. Okay?”

Her smile fades for a moment, almost in confusion. “Okay...I promise.”

“Good. Thank you.” He watches her warily, not exactly convinced by her oath.

He shuts off the light and can hear her shifting on the bed. He tosses his jacket on the bed and wraps himself up in it, trying to avoid shivering in the cold night.

His head is buzzing and he cannot fall asleep. Her presence is gnawing in the back of his mind, and it brings back a slew of unpleasant memories.

Just get some sleep, he tells himself. It’s only one night.

TBC...

Chapter 2

A/N: Hey. I starting writing this story a looong time ago, before Four Months Ago, but as the season went on I kept on writing and morphing it. This is a strange, very long story. I waited a long time to post it because of time constraints, and I wanted to finish the entire thing first...it’s almost done-ish, so posting will be quick, and I should finish the entire thing up soon. So far it’s almost 33,000 words long, so...anybody in? :-)

Fair warning, there’s some NC-17 chapters further along the way, and it gets fairly dark in certain areas, but that’s a while off yet.

I know things ended up going differently in the series, but hey, why not? I’d love to hear any comments! And yes, I’m sure I made all sorts of Veronica Mars references along the way...It happens. ;-) (no more long notes after this chapter, I promise!)
