so much to update. My Titan passed away last saturday the 5th. He had mange, which the vet we originally went to said was just allergies. & he ended up having to be put to sleep. I miss my howdy giving boy. He was just a pup & I called the vet we went to up & cussed him out but that didn't bring my Titan back.
Roxi is probably pregnant, that was totally not in the plans because we were going to get her fixed but she was in heat when we got her & she wasn't bleeding hardly any at all so we didn't know, we noticed one drop of blood like a week after we got her but nothing before or after that. but the puppies will be Titan's puppies since he was the only male dog near her. I guess something good is coming out of her being pregnant at least. But she'll be getting fixed as soon as it's over.
Ivy has proved herself to definitely be the laziest dog I've ever met. We were trying to get her to go to the bedroom & she was sleeping. so we pulled on her collar & she just laid there, we ended up pulling her several feet & having to carry a 72 pound sleeping Ivy up the stairs to the bedroom. She was still sound asleep & snoring when we got to the bedroom. She has to lay down to eat. That dog is so lazy when she's in the house.
& Oak has some bladder issues that we're getting checked out monday. This past week she'll jump up in bed & sleep with us then she'll pee all over herself & keep sleeping. I know that's not normal. but other than that she's healthy as can be, & has become a momma's girl:)
well that's my update.

That's the first time I've ever heard of a dog being put to sleep for mange or allergies.

Did the vet give you any more information?

I'm sorry for your loss.

Ivy could still be spayed, they do emergency spays.

Ivy isn't pregnant, Roxi is, and I can't kill unborn puppies. I don't believe in abortion & in a dog I feel that doing that is the same thing. The mistake was made & now I'll have little Titan's living on & I'll find them homes or however many I need to. I actually have a few possible homes for them. & Titan had demodex (spelling?) which is very very very bad. We ended up going to another vet because the first one treated him for allergies & he was getting worse.

[info]metalkat

Okay, you’re either not listening to your vet, confused, or may be misleading us.

Here’s the deal, it’s not “Demodex” mange, Demodex is the mite that causes “Demodectic mage” which IS the genetic form. Demodex mites are found on *all* dogs, but usually isn’t a problem unless the dog has a genetically predisposition to have problems or is under extreme stress or otherwise has a weakened immune system (due to stress or other illness or even malnutrition). Typically Demodectic mange, when it does overpopulate due to one of these problems, can cause anything from minor irritations/fur loss to severe inflammation and/or infection IF LEFT UNTREATED. Some cases will actually take care of themselves but it’s recommended it be treated... typically a shampoo and/or antibiotics or oral medication is all it takes. Demodectic mange is **Rarely** deadly... so that’s what sets off a huge flag for me, why did your dog have to be put down for mange? This form of mange is NOT contagious, it’s genetic, and the puppies very well could suffer from similar issues later in life, they do have it in their genetics now. It IS a very common genetic problem in Terriers.

There IS another form of Mange, Sarcoptic mange. Sarcoptic mange is caused by scabei canis, a burrowing mite. This form is **extremely contagious** also to humans and even cats, not just dogs. This form digs into the skin, causes intense itching, crusty skin/sores, and can very easily become infected. Hair loss and crusting is common, shows on the ears and elbows first typically... some serious damage can be caused from the intense itching... which can lead to infection. If dogs have this form they should be kept away from all other animals while being treated because it is extremely contagious, this form is NOT genetic. But, this form too is RARELY deadly.

The only thing that comes from mange that would be deadly is the infection that can come from it... from neglecting to treat the problem when it should have been.

So, which form is it? Because the one you listed is the less dangerous of the two, generally easy to treat, and rarely deadly... and it IS genetic so those puppies more than likely **will** suffer from this as well.

my vet told me it was demodex, the bottle of medicine names off demodex, my vet also told me that it's highly contagious once the hair falls out. if caught before hair loss it's easy to treat but once the hair falls out the dog has to be put to sleep. it starts out with bumps & redness then if not treated hair falls out & then you have a problem. when we got titan he already had hair loss from it but the vet we went to first treated him for allergies & it just got worse. I'm going by what my vet said, not by what anyone else says. & 2 vets have since then told me the same thing.

you have got to be kidding me. I'm hoping you're a troll...

first of all, if you knew she was unspayed when you got her, and you knew you had an intact male dog, you should have kept them apart until she was spayed.

second of all, demodectic mange is NOT fatal. it's hard to cure if it's all over the body, but it does NOT require euthanization. EVER. you just killed your dog for no reason.

demodectic mange is thought to be caused by immune disfunction, so it IS, however, inheritable, thus all those puppies of titans with that unspayed female you just got? they have a good chance of having demodectic mange too. are you gonna kill them too?

Please, please tell me you are joking. tell me you didn't foolishly let your dog with an inheritable disease breed, and that you didn't have that same dog killed for something that is not deadly.

those poor dogs.

No puppies deserve to be brought into this world, just so they can be euthanized very shortly thereafter.

It's all a matter of perspective.

Yikes I'm sorry about your loss. And I'm sorry you got attacked. I know how passionate everyone is here, so I do understand the feelings, but I don't condone them.
I may not agree with your decision to keep the puppies. In fact, I don't agree, but it IS your decision.
If you ARE going to keep them, please please PLEASE write up a contract.
The contract should include a spay/neuter clause. Make them give you a refundable deposit. You get proof the dog was fixed, they get their money back. They don't give you proof by 6 months, there's a lot of people who charge them some ridiculous amount of money (I've seen it as high as $2000).
Make sure that if something, anything goes wrong, the puppies come back to you. Not to a shelter. And not to another home unless you approve of that home. You brought them into the world, so they are your responsibily for the duration of their life.

Again, I'm really sorry about Titan. I really hope you do search for a new vet though....

It's a really touchy subject, because this IS a topic we're all very passionate about here, so it's hard not to get riled up, but at the same time, you have to really know what is bordering on inappropriate, and what is crossing the line. I'm so sorry to hear about Titan. That's horrible!!

That form of mange is hereditary, as mentioned in the comment right above. It will probably be passed on, if Titan is in fact the father of Roxi's pups.

My dog had that form of mange when she was a puppy, and she was treated for it, and she's fine now. I really think you should look into it more.....did they give you any other options? What exactly did they tell you? I personally think you should call an attorney.....
