hi,
i'm desperately in need of a foster home for my cat for three to six months. i've had some serious health problems and have to be out of my apt in one week. i will be staying with a friend while i convalesce from a tonsillectomy and orthopedic (leg) surgery and am being treated for an unrelated head trauma.
i can't have my cat with me because my friend has a vicious cat, and it's a studio apt. my disability income (when it starts) is $339/month so i can't pay anyone aside from buying litter/food. i've had him since he was five weeks, and he's now sixteen. he's FIV+, thus indoor, and must be an only cat.
he's healthy otherwise, and very active- more like a cat half his age. he's also very affectionate, my guy in no way resembles the stereotypical aloof kitty. he spoons under the covers with me when i (we) sleep- imagining being separated from him even short-term is breaking my heart, but there is only one other alternative at this point and that's simply not on.
i'm in seattle, if there is anyone who can offer any kind of help or advice i would be so very grateful. {i'm not in a heap of self-pity, or looking for sympathy, i hope it doesn't sound that way, i just wanted to explain the situation)
thanks. |

| Cat in Boston area |
[Nov. 2nd, 2007|12:29 am] |
I'm in Manchester, NH (nearby) -- one hour north of downtown Boston, driving time.
There's this cat, you see ...
She's a little black & white girl, with all black body and little white paws tips and a small white bib. She's medium-haired (slightly longer than the standard American Shorthair), loving, people-oriented, and obedient. She comes when I call her, meeps nicely, and allows me to carry her wherever -- even in front of cats she doesn't like (mine, for instance).
I've been careful to separate them at all times, washing after I handle her even for the slightest time.
She had a litter on our property, even though she's clearly about 9-10 months old herself, and her kittens are grown enough to wean and have (not surprisingly) gone completely feral. Catching them is pretty much out of the question, but there's a healthy feral colony in the neighborhood that should adopt them, especially as the father hangs around a lot and has looked after them and the mother in the past (he "brought" her to me, quite obviously, when he realized she couldn't hunt and was a stray not feral herself). She still can't hunt, poor thing. She relies on our handouts -- yeah, started feeding her when she was pregnant and Black Cat (the father -- who has been around for years) brought her deliberately to us, watched while she ate, and hung around to watch over her.
Now she's been coming in evenings to stay segregated in the guest room in the barn. Her milk is drying up, and I have put in a call to have her checked for the usual diseases, etc.
But, but, but ...
I can't see taking her with us to DC. I mean, my own cats will have a tough enough time adapting. But introducing another dominant female into the mix may make Dawn (who is definitely Teh Dominant Female) right over the edge.
What to do. What to do.
If there's anyone in this area who would like a loving female black cat, I would love to hear from you. I want her to go to a home where she'll be loved and coddled, the way she wants. She wants attention from humans sooooo much. And she's such a sweetie. I already love her to bits.
I can't leave her to fend for herself -- she wouldn't make it a week on her own. Not in winter. Not without being able to hunt. The feral colony doesn't want her -- she doesn't fit in, as she's simply a stray that someone dumped as a kitten (who could DO that?!).

| Pet transport in Maryland-DC area |
[Oct. 11th, 2007|11:11 pm] |
I have a reliable car and can help if you lack transportation and means to procure it in the Maryland-DC area and need to transport a cat or other small animal in a carrier to or from a fosterer/fosteree, the veterinarians, or a like situation, as my schedule permits. |

I'm in the southwest region of Montana (specifically Dillon, located in Beaverhead County), and can do the following:
- Temporarily foster cats only. Space is limited because I have three cats of my own, but I am willing to foster up to two cats.
- Coordinate efforts to get dogs, cats, and perhaps other pets, depending on what, to the local shelter or possible foster home.
Transportation: What I can personally offer to help with is limited, but my schedule is presently quite open, so I would be willing to drive moderate distances. (As a point of reference I'm willing to drive to Twin Bridges, Whitehall, Butte, Bozeman, and possibly Helena or Missoula). For distances requiring more than an hour's driving time I would need assistance with gas money.
Some notes on the local shelter: It is a chapter of the Humane society and no-kill. The manager does not turn away animals due to space limitations. While it is primarily a dog and cat shelter, we have also housed rabbits, rats, occasionally snakes and even injured wild animals such as pigeons, raccoons, or squirrels. Also, the manager primarily takes in dogs and cats from all over the Beaverhead county area, but she has also taken animals from elsewhere in Montana and, in emergency situations, from all over the nation. She also regularly drives fair distances to pick up an animal, so if I'm unable to provide transporation, it is entirely possible she can provide it instead. |

I'm in the Boston, MA area.
I have experience in fostering Dachshunds as well as working with dogs who have been abused or who have come from Pupymills/Back Yard Breeders (BYBs).
I personally can't help with transport but I can help with coordination and home visits for any placements happening in the Boston metro area that are accessible via public transportation. I do have access to non-LJ people who may be available to do transports.
I can serve as a resource for information on Dog behavioral issues and general animal health questions. (note: I am NOT a veterinarian or Vet Tech.)
I can help with emergency evacuations.
I currently have two cats and one dog in my home.
TAGS: Boston, Massachusetts, puppymill, dachshund, cat (since it won't let me add them in the proper place) |
