| Have to find three kitties a new home |
[Dec. 16th, 2007|09:11 pm] |
Edit:...anybody? I'm on a time crunch now. I found a place this morning and found that they do allow cats, after all, but the catch is the cats have to be declawed. I'm not willing to hack off my boys' toes, thanks. But I've got to figure something out by the end of THIS WEEK.
Well, on two separate occasions I found myself facing the prospect of having to give up my kitties, only to dodge the bullet. This time, it seems, there's no dodging. I have to find a new apartment and that means I have to give up my guys. I would very much prefer NOT to split them up, and I would also prefer to avoid taking them to the shelter. It's no-kill, but the conditions at the shelter have deteriorated considerably lately with some changes made by the shelter's board. It's hugely overcrowded and nearly all of the cats have chronic colds.
I would like to say that this would be a temporary thing, that if someone would kindly take them for a couple or three months, I would relieve them of the burden of three cats as soon as I got settled. But that is not likely to be the case and so I'm hoping to find someone willing to give them a permanent home.
Please be aware that I would only too eagerly pay a (small, but adequate) fee to keep them in food and litter.
The main problem, though, is that I live in southwest Montana, which may well be far out of the range of anyone otherwise willing to adopt my kitties.

Let me acquaint you all with driveforlife. It's a network to transport pets. I think these two communities could help one another. |

My mother lives in Nashville, Tennessee, and found two healthy pups (about three months old) out by her house. She's already checked the neighborhood, and no one's claimed them, and a) she absolutely refused to take them to the pound and b) can't take care of them herself since she's already got two dogs. They are housebroken (they haven't messed in the house, at least) and are well-behaved and friendly with people and other dogs. She really doesn't want to split them up, and she's going to be taking them tomorrow to get checked up on and see if they have been microchipped.
If they haven't been microchipped, they need a home. If anyone is in the area or knows someone who can take them in or wants more information about them, please drop me a line at star_dancer54 @ hotmail . com |

[Nov. 25th, 2007|03:26 am] |
hi,
i'm desperately in need of a foster home for my cat for three to six months. i've had some serious health problems and have to be out of my apt in one week. i will be staying with a friend while i convalesce from a tonsillectomy and orthopedic (leg) surgery and am being treated for an unrelated head trauma.
i can't have my cat with me because my friend has a vicious cat, and it's a studio apt. my disability income (when it starts) is $339/month so i can't pay anyone aside from buying litter/food. i've had him since he was five weeks, and he's now sixteen. he's FIV+, thus indoor, and must be an only cat.
he's healthy otherwise, and very active- more like a cat half his age. he's also very affectionate, my guy in no way resembles the stereotypical aloof kitty. he spoons under the covers with me when i (we) sleep- imagining being separated from him even short-term is breaking my heart, but there is only one other alternative at this point and that's simply not on.
i'm in seattle, if there is anyone who can offer any kind of help or advice i would be so very grateful. {i'm not in a heap of self-pity, or looking for sympathy, i hope it doesn't sound that way, i just wanted to explain the situation)
thanks. |

| Dayton, OH, male kitten, help needed |
[Nov. 18th, 2007|08:43 pm] |
From a friend who needs help:
I don't have a public LJ (I know, I know, I need to get one and I'm going to today) but I have something that needs to be posted to the pet rescue list.
Tonight I took in a tiny grey male tabby with tiger markings, but my building doesn't allow pets and I can't keep him because I'm already hiding one cat. It's going to be a hard freeze tonight and the little guy is nothing but skin and bones, I couldn't let him freeze to death. There isn't an opening in a no-kill shelter in this area.
He's an unaltered male under 1 year of age, short haired, from what I can tell he's socialized, I don't think he's had any of his shots yet and I don't know if he will do well with other cats or dogs. He eats like a bottomless pit, right now we only had canned and dry adult food and he really needs to bulk up on some kitten chow. I don't know if he's litter trained, I guess we'll find out tonight when he wakes up. He's friendly, affectionate, mouthy, loud, and bossy. So far he answers to Hiro (hubby is a huge Heroes fan) but I call him Babycakes.
We're looking for someone who can adopt him or foster him while they look for someone to adopt him. We're in the Dayton, OH area and we're willing to drive out as far as Xenia. We insist on handing him off in a public place for security reasons (a Wal-Mart parking lot is good), and whomever we give him to will probably need a carrier because we don't have an extra. Almost any day of the week before about 1 pm is good for us to make a trip.
Don't give out this email address, interested parties can get in touch with my husband at rstlss1@gmail.com |

| Cat Rescue Assistance Needed |
[Nov. 7th, 2007|03:02 pm] |
http://bronxelf-ag001.livejournal.com/689851.html
Long story short: bronxelf is taking in a cat from all the way across the country to keep it from being sent to a shelter. Kitty is being dumped/rehomed because parents have new infant (and, IMO, cannot be bothered to adequately supervise either cat or kid since they're mad at the cat for behaving like, you know, a cat). Paypal e-mail addy is in the linked post, and only $40 more is needed to complete the funding necessary to get kitty's shots, carrier and cargo ticket. |

| Natasha (aka Black Momma Kitten) |
[Nov. 6th, 2007|07:28 pm] |
Well, Natasha tests negative for FIV and Feline Leuk, so she's been let out of her confinement in the back bedroom, as the other cats have had two full weeks of her staying there every evening from dark until 9am, as well as the rainiest of days when she begged to come in. The vet confirmed: she's really just a kitten herself, even if she is a momma.

She's been exploring carefully but thoroughly, and is a perfect guest. She's settled right now on the blue velvet sofa, flopped out and happy. The other cats have mostly been ignoring her, except Fielder, who desperately wants a new friend and keeps sticking his nose out towards her and sniffing, following her everywhere (typical Fielder, "I want to know you!" behavior). She growls at him, but doesn't actually do anything. Dawn, strangely enough, has been ignoring her -- and I thought they'd fight like crazy, both being dominant females. I suppose that may come with time. One can only hope it won't be too bad.
She goes in on Thursday for neutering, even though she still has some milk from weaning her kittens; the vet doesn't think this will be too difficult.

The next trick will be the kittens. They allow me to put out kitten food by the dog igloo on the deck (to keep it out of the rain), but they scatter as soon as I even approach the door. They won't eat until I'm at least six feet away from the windows. With that type of feral behavior, I don't know if I can lure them into a cage and get it shut -- even if Natasha is with me, they won't approach. Feral indeed.
Pray that I can get them in the next few days -- I can't keep feeding them on the deck forever. For one thing, we can't afford to feed four kittens. For another, as soon as I move, they'll be without food. That would be a tragedy I don't think I could forgive myself for.
>< >< >< >< ><
Oh and I picked up Minerva's ashes today. I still feel terribly conflicted about this -- I'm convinced I jumped the gun and didn't give her a chance. Yet I know she had been altered in mental functions for at least two years. I don't know if I'll ever get over that one. I still feel like a murderer. |

| Cat in Boston area |
[Nov. 2nd, 2007|12:29 am] |
I'm in Manchester, NH (nearby) -- one hour north of downtown Boston, driving time.
There's this cat, you see ...
She's a little black & white girl, with all black body and little white paws tips and a small white bib. She's medium-haired (slightly longer than the standard American Shorthair), loving, people-oriented, and obedient. She comes when I call her, meeps nicely, and allows me to carry her wherever -- even in front of cats she doesn't like (mine, for instance).
I've been careful to separate them at all times, washing after I handle her even for the slightest time.
She had a litter on our property, even though she's clearly about 9-10 months old herself, and her kittens are grown enough to wean and have (not surprisingly) gone completely feral. Catching them is pretty much out of the question, but there's a healthy feral colony in the neighborhood that should adopt them, especially as the father hangs around a lot and has looked after them and the mother in the past (he "brought" her to me, quite obviously, when he realized she couldn't hunt and was a stray not feral herself). She still can't hunt, poor thing. She relies on our handouts -- yeah, started feeding her when she was pregnant and Black Cat (the father -- who has been around for years) brought her deliberately to us, watched while she ate, and hung around to watch over her.
Now she's been coming in evenings to stay segregated in the guest room in the barn. Her milk is drying up, and I have put in a call to have her checked for the usual diseases, etc.
But, but, but ...
I can't see taking her with us to DC. I mean, my own cats will have a tough enough time adapting. But introducing another dominant female into the mix may make Dawn (who is definitely Teh Dominant Female) right over the edge.
What to do. What to do.
If there's anyone in this area who would like a loving female black cat, I would love to hear from you. I want her to go to a home where she'll be loved and coddled, the way she wants. She wants attention from humans sooooo much. And she's such a sweetie. I already love her to bits.
I can't leave her to fend for herself -- she wouldn't make it a week on her own. Not in winter. Not without being able to hunt. The feral colony doesn't want her -- she doesn't fit in, as she's simply a stray that someone dumped as a kitten (who could DO that?!).

| Michigan |
[Oct. 12th, 2007|12:24 pm] |
Hi - I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and could provide transportation if needed. Also, my roomate who is not on lj is a veterinary technician, so I can always try to ask her for information.
I own one large dog and cannot take fosters, however, I have quite a few resources that can and will pass on all pertinant info.
I also make frequent trips to Lansing Michigan.

[Oct. 12th, 2007|08:02 am] |
I'm in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I'm mostly connected to the local greyhound rescue group, but I could dig up resources (via the local group) for nationwide sight hound assistance. In other words, if you have a sight hound (greyhound, whippet, IG, wolf hound, etc) we will find you help.
Also, anybody wishing to adopt a retired racer, I'm more than happy to help with information.
I wish I could foster and such, but with a retired racer there are no guarantees that the dogs will get along. And cats are right out. Most dogs will chase a cat. The difference is that a greyhound can actually *catch* a cat, so I have to be very careful.
I could also help with transportation with all breeds. |

| Pet transport in Maryland-DC area |
[Oct. 11th, 2007|11:11 pm] |
I have a reliable car and can help if you lack transportation and means to procure it in the Maryland-DC area and need to transport a cat or other small animal in a carrier to or from a fosterer/fosteree, the veterinarians, or a like situation, as my schedule permits. |

[Oct. 11th, 2007|07:23 pm] |
I'm in the southwest region of Montana (specifically Dillon, located in Beaverhead County), and can do the following:
- Temporarily foster cats only. Space is limited because I have three cats of my own, but I am willing to foster up to two cats.
- Coordinate efforts to get dogs, cats, and perhaps other pets, depending on what, to the local shelter or possible foster home.
Transportation: What I can personally offer to help with is limited, but my schedule is presently quite open, so I would be willing to drive moderate distances. (As a point of reference I'm willing to drive to Twin Bridges, Whitehall, Butte, Bozeman, and possibly Helena or Missoula). For distances requiring more than an hour's driving time I would need assistance with gas money.
Some notes on the local shelter: It is a chapter of the Humane society and no-kill. The manager does not turn away animals due to space limitations. While it is primarily a dog and cat shelter, we have also housed rabbits, rats, occasionally snakes and even injured wild animals such as pigeons, raccoons, or squirrels. Also, the manager primarily takes in dogs and cats from all over the Beaverhead county area, but she has also taken animals from elsewhere in Montana and, in emergency situations, from all over the nation. She also regularly drives fair distances to pick up an animal, so if I'm unable to provide transporation, it is entirely possible she can provide it instead. |

| Checking in |
[Oct. 11th, 2007|04:31 pm] |
I currently live in Huntsville, Alabama. I have limited experience with rescuing animals, although since I moved into my new place I have rescued several stray kittens and found homes for them. I have also found some homes for dogs on occasion, but not recently. I currently have a dog who is very anti-cat, else I might be keeping some kitties myself. |

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm an experienced dog trainer and may be able to help out with obedience training on a limited basis (depends on my schedule). No aggressive dogs; if your dog has an aggression problem, you need to pay a professional. :-)
Oh ... ginmar, please add tags for SF Bay Area and dog training to the list. :-) |

I'm in the Boston, MA area.
I have experience in fostering Dachshunds as well as working with dogs who have been abused or who have come from Pupymills/Back Yard Breeders (BYBs).
I personally can't help with transport but I can help with coordination and home visits for any placements happening in the Boston metro area that are accessible via public transportation. I do have access to non-LJ people who may be available to do transports.
I can serve as a resource for information on Dog behavioral issues and general animal health questions. (note: I am NOT a veterinarian or Vet Tech.)
I can help with emergency evacuations.
I currently have two cats and one dog in my home.
TAGS: Boston, Massachusetts, puppymill, dachshund, cat (since it won't let me add them in the proper place) |

| Transportation assistance offered in/near NC |
[Oct. 11th, 2007|11:56 am] |
I'm in the Triangle area of North Carolina (that is, the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area). I have a car and a flexible schedule. I can offer transportation of any kind of animal that will fit in a relatively small car.
This includes transportation to/from a foster home. I'm willing to drive some distance for transportation to a foster home if it's necessary -- I'll offer 4 hour drive as a first approximation to my limit. For a long drive I'd ask for some gas reimbursement.
It also includes transportation of an animal to/from a vet or animal hospital, if someone local to me needs help with that. |
