UWA Multicultural Week

Dear all,

The International Students Service (ISS) of UWA will be holding its annual Multicultural Week (MCW) at the first week of October. MCW serves to celebrate diversity of culture in Australia, or in our case UWA. The highlight of the week is Spring Feast (9 October 2008) which is a pasar malam (night market) where devilicious food from different culture, games and fun come together.

Currently, registrations for Spring Feast stalls are still on till 11 September 2008.

Spring Feast 2008 – 9th October 2008

Stalls Normal
Students (Guild)	$77
Students (non-Guild)	$82.5
Non-Students $99

*Price includes $33 deposit for tables and chairs, refunded if equipment is returned in satisfactory condition. GST is included in prices*

Students refer to UWA students so non-UWA students are counted under Non-Students category. Regardless, no worries. If you have a UWA friend, ask them to sign up on your behalf or you can ask me too.

For any other enquiries, please contact:

Frederick Ang - ang.frederick@hotmail.com

or leave a comment.

Regards,
ISS Committee '08

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young. GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at: www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student.

While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the United States.

Hey there.

I'm moving to live campus at Murdoch uni, and was hoping there were a few people with experience living on (any) university campus that could give me some advice.

The first is (or at least fells like) a silly question, but - what typically happens with dinner in a shared flat? Does everyone just make their own, or is it a bit more communal? Obviously it'll be different for every group of people, but I was just wondering if there was a general trend. I'm just going to feel a bit odd on the first day not knowing what everyone's going to be doing, and I'm rather shy around new people so I probably won't ask. But I'm probably worrying too much. :P

I was also wondering if anyone had any tips for living cheaply around Perth. Food, entertainment, etc. on a student budget, that sort of thing.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out.

I am trying to organise a peaceful protest rally in Western Australia on May 11 and May 18 against governmental cooperation with greys, human abduction an human corruption, and second rally against allowing greys to land in and live in Australia, respectively. If anyone is interested please add me as a lj friend or just live a post on my ljournal. Also if you can spread the word about the rally it would be really great, as Western Australia is in a high level danger zone, and abductions happen often and more and more openly.

I'm holding a small survey for one of my unit's project. It's on numbers and finding out whether it correlates with culture.

The targets are, if possible, UWA students.

There are only seven questions. Please be truthful and for privacy protection, all comments are screened and they will never be revealed to the public. Should they ever be required for public viewing, permission will be requested beforehand.

Link: Questionnaire

for those at UWA

When you get off the bus stop from the city and go down the slope to the tunnel leading to UWA, is that graffiti still there on the right hand side?

Hello

Hey guys,

I was wondering if any one of you Perthians know a TAFE institute for an international student such as myself to go to. Chances are high that I'll transfer my credits to university and get a degree, if possible. I'm studying social sciences at the moment but the course isn't giving me much. I'm not the type to deal with essay papers and deadlines. Thus, I'm willing change the field and do something related to IT as it's been my job for a while no. Plus, it involves as less human contact as possible, so.

Would be awesome if one of you had any insight about the courses like System Administration. Classes and teaching techniques.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Survey of Australians re: Depression

My apologies for the spam, I've fixed the poll as advised. Results are now viewable to none, and you can feel free to ignore this anyway.

Intro: I'm Samantha and I'm doing a course in Marketing Management over the winter break, in which we have to create a marketing plan for Beyond Blue, an organisation which provides depression-related services mainly in the eastern states. They aren't associated with this, and won't be using the marketing plan.

As for your results, they are completely confidential. Your names (please don't include them), livejournal username, or otherwise, will not be released to anyone and your individual answers will not be published or released in any format.

Once again, sorry for the cross-posting and now for the double-posting too. Once again, your feedback would be really important to me on these questions, especially if you're between 13-30 and have ever lived in Western Australia.

View Poll: #1021285

Survey of Australians re: Depression

Introduction: My name is Samantha, and I'm doing a course at my uni (Murdoch) over the winter break, in which we have to do some research on depression and organisations which provide services and support for those suffering depression in Australia.

My profound apologies if this gets cross-posted, but your feedback would be really important to me on these questions, especially if you're between 13-30 and have ever lived in Western Australia.

Thank you in advance, you're all legends if you help me out on this one.

Edit: Duly noted, I will re-do the poll with privacy settings/etc and a bit more info for you all. Sorry, I was in a rush.

Edit2: PPS. I founded this comm back in '04. Great to see it active. :D

Upcoming performance for Bedlam Theatre Company

Bedlam Theatre Company presents:

A Resounding Tinkle

by N. F. Simpson

directed by Dominique Evans

All Mr and Mrs Paradock, respectable citizens, wanted the zoo to do was deliver them a nice little elephant. Something small, like the one they had last year. And instead, they’ve received a whopping great one. Whatever are they to do? As Middie Paradock so rightly worries, “people think you’re trying to go one better than everybody else.” Their mood isn’t improved by door-knocking comedians, cold-calling neighbours, and the stunning arrival of their Uncle Ted, and soon they’re bickering over all and sundry. Is six o’clock the right time of day to start a government? Do eagles need eye-glasses? And what kind of hat is best in the rain?

N. F. Simpson’s hilarious absurdist comedy was first performed in 1957, but its satirical bite is just as sharp fifty years on. Its cracking dialogue and witty one-liners will resonate with anyone who has rolled their eyes at someone far too concerned with what the Joneses next door think of their new patio. Australia has already learned to laugh at the trivialities of suburban life with Kath & Kim. Now it’s time to do it in the theatre – with an absurdist touch to make you pay attention!

Audiences will be delighted by director Dominique Evans’ faithful revival of a post-war English theatre classic. A night of wicked humour awaits them, proving that, in the end, sometimes it’s better just to order the giraffe instead.

PERFORMANCE DATES:
Thursday 5 July, 7.30pm
Friday 6 July, 7.30pm
Saturday 7 July, 7.30pm

VENUE:
Murdoch University Drama Workshop
(nearest Carpark 4, off South Street)

TICKET PRICES:
$5 (general public)
Gold coin (Bedlam members)

BOOKINGS & INFORMATION:
Ph: 0432 969 560 (Damian Smith)
Email: bedlam_tc@hotmail.com

Unit problems, advice please!

In one of my units the lecturer changed the date of one assessment (and wont allow me to sit it, since I missed the new date) and then changed the time of the Oral exam component, so I missed that.

At no point was I informed of any of these chages, despite the lecturer having both my private email address (we have communicated via email a number of times) and of course my university student email.

Do I have grounds for a complaint?
I am withdrawing from this unit next semester, and will study cross institutionally, rather than risk next semesters grades!

Thanks!
