Naganaki shrine. It's late September, and the ground is littered with orange and gold. It's getting dark, and you can barely see Koromaru's white shape, his wings flopping around as he bounds about.
"Why are you doing this?" Shijiro's voice is rough, straightforward.
You answer.
He's nothing like Akihiko. Akihiko didn't smirk like that, like he didn't really believe you. Akihiko was gentle, somehow. At the surface he was tough, but it was a different sort of arcana than that of Shinjiro's. You're not sure you understand Shinjiro. You feel he has a soft spot, sort of. Maybe he isn't being bitter when he smirks like that. Maybe he sees himself in you. Or sees Akihiko. You know next to nothing of what their past is or was, but you know that when you answer, "To protect my friends" it rings true memory faint in him. Maybe.
Maybe he doesn't understand you, either. His hand is rough on your arm, his breath urgent as he leans in. His lips are harsh against yours, aggressive in their motion and the second after you think you're going to be violently sick you think that maybe you might like this. Not more than Akihiko's gentle and almost awkward touches, but to a degree. His touch itself is almost cruel, gripping and pushing at you so that the stone steps dig into your back, punctuated in a weird sort of unbalance by the things he hisses between gasps.
"If anything happens to him under your command... I'll... I'll fucking kill you."
He walks away before you think that you might retaliate with words and actions your own, whistling for the dog and not waiting for you to catch up. No one is in the lounge, and he pauses on the steps, his back to you in the dim light of the lamps. "Don't tell Aki," he says. You watch him ascend and don't follow for a long moment. Two seconds before midnight, you turn to Koromaru and scratch behind his left ear. "Don't tell Aigis," you mutter, smiling a bitter smile.

Voice

He waited to hear his voice.

“Are you still there?” Akihiko asked.

Shinjiro chuckled, “Can’t you hear me breathing, idiot?”

Akihiko scoffed, smiling softly, glad to hear his voice again.

Shinjiro and Akihiko had been talking on the phone more and more when they couldn’t just meet up in their dorm room because with testing over, everyone was talking on the second floor. Personally, Shinjiro hated the phone, but there was something about line-to-line talks with Akihiko that made him like it ever, ever so slightly.

Akihiko was used to using the phone, because of having to connect with Mitsuru in Tartarus, or during the full moon’s outside of Tartarus. But talking to Shinjiro was nice.

Akihiko was going through a strange little phase of some sort, and that’s what made him knock on Shinjiro’s door at two AM. He heard a small groan from the other side before the door opened.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Shinjiro asked, his voice coated with sleep.

Akihiko was now wondering that himself, and tried to think up a good excuse.

“Well?” Shinji pressed. “…You’re not high, are you?”

“Of course not!!” Akihiko exploded, before a rough hand covered his mouth.

“Shut up, you’ll wake the others,” Shinjiro snarled.

Aki’s face flushed slightly before he regained his composure and moved Shinjiro’s hand off him.

“Why are you here?” Shinjiro asked again.

Akihiko took a small step forward, and pressed his lips to Shinjiro’s softly.

Now it was Shinjiro who needed to regain his composure.

“What the hell --?!”

“I love you, you idiot,” Aki said, kissing Shinji again.

Shinjiro rolled his eyes and pulled Aki inside his dorm room closing the door behind them.

“I know.”

Akihiko knelt beside Shinjiro. And he realized something. He, too, was crying.
Shinjiro whispered one last sentence before his eyes rolled back into his head.
"I love you,"
Akihiko cried more because of that, knowing that even after he said "I love you, too," Shinjiro wouldn't have heard it.
