Subject:Torus War - encyclopedia entry

Excerpt from Encyclopedia Perseitica, 2nd edition, 2588

Torus War
A conflict lasting in broad outline from 2551 to 2553, and centering around the development of the multi-torus era and the political jostling related to this circumstance. The initial triggering event of the war is generally held to be the discovery in October 2551 of the planet Dahome in Third Sphere by Dr. Kenge Ramat, as part of the research funded by the Cosmic Atlas Project, a charitable organization dedicated to the search for habitable planets other than those of Earthside and Sphereside. This was followed very shortly thereafter by a terror attack at the Loco Citato café on October 20 that killed, among others, Calcifer Hebblethwaite, co-founder of the CAP. (This attack is now generally held to have been the work of Anastasi Szabo, a CAP insider, as part of an effort to gain power within the organization). The attack led to the passing of the Sphereside Protection Act by the European Parliament on November 7, which led to the creation of the Comitatus as (it was then believed) a temporary measure to prevent terrorism and protect Perseity.

In February 2552, the Nova Carpathian government announced the completion of a previously-secret project to build an experimental torus (now the Brana auxiliary torus) to the newly discovered Sphere. At around the same time, or shortly earlier, the Austronesian government on Earth began a secret project to launch a full-sized torus to the new sphere in an effort to pre-empt European or Carpathian efforts to colonize the new planet. While many Perseites welcomed the new colonization efforts, other groups, including Stormfront, led by future President Storm Mabrey and his wife (then girlfriend) Aysta Broken-in-Two, opposed and protested the militarization that would inevitably follow from such activity. Furthermore, on March 14, 2552, an event sponsored by future Senator Lerah Qonoli in support of the CAP led to tragedy as Rose Weddel, one of the colony's eight elected councillors and a strong supporter of the CAP, was subjected to a neurotoxin attack that left her socially disabled and unable to function in society. This attack is now believed to have been orchestrated by the Austronesian government in an effort to weaken the resolve of those supporting the CAP and the Carpathian project. Nevertheless, the new torus was activated and the First Brana Mission launched in May 2552.

Concern over the potential ethical consequences of the colonization of new worlds brought new light to the concerns of the Auia on Perseity and throughout Second Sphere. Led in part by future Tarka Medal winner Dr. Hendrick Avercamp and his future wife, Talia Wade, efforts were made throughout 2552 to highlight the particular difficulties of interspecies relations. The discovery of an Auia cannibalism ring by Dr. Avercamp's student Emily Lister in August 2552 prompted public outcry and concern over the treatment of Auia in New Whyalla and elsewhere on Akkad. While Third Sphere exploration located only the remains of the Xarritl species and its ruined civilizations, this new focus on interspecies issues would become extremely relevant after the conclusion of the war with the discovery of the T-bodies by Dr. Horst Eberwein (another Tarka medal winner) and the culture of the Indwellers.

July 8, 2552 is a date well-known to all as the beginning of the Sunder, as the AT2 torus was destroyed by Sepalika Ranatunga, a member of the now-defunct Murtuma terror organization working in collaboration with Austronesian officials. By this time, the Austronesian government had completed their new torus pair (the Airlangga moebiotorus) but had concluded that Europe and the Sphereside nations were so apathetic to the notion of Third Sphere colonization that their effort was better directed towards the establishment of their own link to Second Sphere and the destruction of AT2. The Sunder brought attention and great scrutiny to Ambassador Hermenegildus Frankenbauer, an elderly lifelong politician who acquired the powers of the European President once the link to Europe was severed. Ambassador Frankenbauer, while often regarded as a stodgy supporter of the European status quo, was in fact responsible for much diplomatic negotiation with Sphereside nations during the Sunder period which led eventually to Perseity's present governmental structure.

On September 19, Anastasi Szabo, who had by this time become the chief lieutenant and advisor to Joan Strode-Hebblethwaite, leader of the CAP, was assassinated during an interview with reporter Vincenzo Datini. Although Mr. Datini was at first charged with the crime, he was later exonerated, and no one has ever been brought to justice for the murder. Several bizarre theories of the crime, which was made into the popular vid By No Man's Hand, remain popular, including that Joan Strode-Hebblethwaite committed the murder as vengeance for her husband's death, that Szabo committed suicide due to guilty sentiments, and (less plausibly) that AEGIS Director Quaquin Elmore became deranged and had Szabo killed (a claim apparently made by Datini at one point, and potentially substantiated by Elmore's suicide the next month). Many scholars hold that Szabo was assassinated by Austronesian agents working in preparation for the invasion of Perseity that would follow shortly thereafter.

On October 1, the Airlangga moebiotorus was launched Earthside, and on October 14 the torus was opened near Perseity, and a fleet of Austronesian warships surrounded Perseity and forced Ambassador Frankenbauer and Governor Philomene Tagliava to cede control. Octovina Dua-Kekayaan was installed as governor of the puppet state, which was ideologized as a province-in-waiting of the Austronesian confederated republic. Once Europe learned of the invasion, it formally declared war on Austronesia, commencing the 'hot' phase of the Torus War. While initially seemingly benign, rapid changes to the political and legal system were quickly enacted by the Austronesian regime. By November, a set of active resistance movements had formed on Perseity, most notably that led by Lerah Qonoli and her lover, the poet-scholar Jero Gede Macgregor. These movements became militant after December 10, when a peaceful demonstration of Tengrists at the Austronesian justice department on Perseity was brutally suppressed and its leaders killed, arrested, or dispersed.

On January 13, 2553, Joan Strode-Hebblethwaite was arrested by Austronesian authorities on charges of weapons possession related to resistance activities; Strode-Hebblethwaite herself has kept her silence on this matter, but it is generally believed that the CAP was actively involved in anti-Austronesian activity at the time. Three days later, a major attack was launched by a resistance group led by the Fatalist prophet, Gadaquali, which led to severe damage to the Endoport and destroyed much of the Austronesian fleet. It is now generally acknowledged that the Comitatus was partly responsible for arming and coordinating with this group. On January 23, a European torus finally reappeared in Perseity's vicinity, and a fleet of European warships emerged and demanded that Austronesia concede control. When these efforts failed, Europe, in conjunction with Carpathian, Galatsadi and Linnaean allies, launched an attack on the remnants of the Austronesian fleet and re-occupied the colony.

While Austronesian reinforcements were deployed, these efforts were stymied when the senior staff of their warships all acquired Torogenic Identity Disorder (which is now understood as the result of the process by which T-bodies and N-bodies are separated, or discerped). While inexplicable at the time, it has now been established that Dr. Horst Eberwein and his colleague Apo Rising were in communication with the Indwellers, who then engaged the Austronesians and discerped them. While most of those affected were later permitted to be rejoined, this marked the first use of the discerpment process for tactical ends, raising many ethical and strategic issues which persist to the present.

By February 5, 2553, Perseity was back in European hands. The conclusion of the major fighting occurred on that day when patriot-pornographer Vigo Qvist launched an attack on the last remaining Austronesian outpost. Among those slain in the last stage of this conflict was Ambassador Frankenbauer, who died during a last-ditch effort by the Austronesians to hold political figures hostage in order to secure their freedom.

While the Torus War was relatively brief and resulted in limited loss of life, its consequences for Perseity and beyond were immense. Among the more important are:
- The discovery of Third Sphere and the extinct civilizations of Dahome, and the beginning of the colonization of the new Sphere.
- The replacement of European hegemony over torus travel by a multi-national, multi-torus policy that prevents any state from exercising sole control over the links between Spheres.
- The dissolution of the office of unelected governor of Perseity and the introduction of a republican government with an elected president, eight elected Perseite senators, and two senators appointed by each of Europe, America, Nova Carpathia, and Galatsadi, the nations responsible for the defense of the colony and the maintenance of the local torii.
- The introduction of the Comitatus, and its subsequent replacement of AEGIS as the intelligence agency of Perseity.
- The commencement of communication with the Indwellers, a thorough understanding of the nature of TID and the discerpment process, and the subsequent recognition of Indwellers as a sentient non-human species with quasi-territorial rights over t-space.

TNS reporter brutally slain

A body discovered this evening has been confirmed to be that of its occupant, TNS reporter Vincenzo Datini. Mr. Datini, 28, was apparently slain in his home by a knife-wielding assailant, whose motives and identity remain unknown. It is believed that Mr. Datini, a known firearms enthusiast, responded with gunfire and wounded his assailant before succumbing to his wounds. Although Mr. Datini has been involved in a number of high-profile media events, most recently reporting on the uprisings in H-Hab, it is not believed at the present time that his murder is related to those activities. An anonymous I&I investigator has suggested to this reporter that it is possible that his attacker used the current state of relative chaos in the colony in order to perpetrate the crime. However, investigators have a number of leads and considerable physical evidence, and hope to make an arrest shortly. Mr. Datini, a European of Italian descent, was unmarried and leaves no known children, but was admired and respected by all of us at TNS.

Hi Apo... I hope you're all right. I am. I miss you, though. I'll be going away soon, back to Eho for a while, with Zozo. I was wondering if you would like to get together? I'm not sure when we'll be going or anything like that yet. We might have plenty more opportunities to hang out. But in case we don't I just wanted to check in on you, and see if you'd like to get together Saturday afternoon (I've got to tend to Zozo today while Koi is visiting Lerah).

Um, I seem to have forgotten how to write coherently! Fib me back!

FREEDOM!

Good afternoon. As of 1200 yesterday, the illegal Austronesian occupation of Perseity has ended. There are no Austronesian military craft within a 20,000 kilometre radius of the colony, and a EurMil perimeter has been established to prevent further incursions. After a series of battles on Thursday and Friday, European authorities have eliminated any further Austronesian military threat to any of the habs or to any colony services and institutions.

It is believed that up to 50 Austronesian military officials may still be armed and active within the colony, but these are being dealt with as quickly as possible, and are not believed to pose any significant military threat. Over 500 Austronesian soldiers and civilian officials are in EurMil custody until such time as it can be determined whether any of them are to be prosecuted. Among those in custody include Octovina Dua-Kekayaan, Li-Sze Yinyin and Seok Gyan Lima-Tekad. No formal charges have yet been laid.

While Austronesian control of the colony is now officially ended, some areas of the colony are not yet fully cleared for ordinary civilian business. A small number of zones that have suffered heavy infrastructural damage remain off-limits until necessary repairs can be made. A semi-anarchic state prevails in H-Hab, which for the past several days has been under the nominal authority of a band of disaffected resistance fighters led by Bhu, 29, currently the bodyguard to Councillor Traianus Brox. TNS has learned that Bhu has now instructed his group to disband and has turned himself over to EurMil authorities. Although there is no major threat remaining on the colony, citizens are urged to exercise caution while EurMil re-establishes full control over the colony's institutions and services.

A transitional team is being appointed in order to oversee the transition of the colony to a civilian administration within the next two weeks. Zoster travel has now been re-established to all habs. All members of the Laws and Means Councils as of August 2552 will be re-installed in their positions as soon as is possible. Talaria News Service itself is now under its old administration, with Director Alula Casavez at the helm.

In the days and weeks to come, we will no doubt hear and tell many tales of heroism and sacrifice during the occupation and relating to its bloody conclusion. Already, it is becoming grimly evident that many dozens of Perseites have lost their lives throughout the events of the past weeks. Just a few of those who have come to the attention of TNS reporters are:

- Hermenegildus Frankenbauer, 108, European ambassador to Perseity and the colony's pro tem President, died after being held hostage by Austronesian officials, while protecting his own staff from harm.
- Maximina MacDuff, 82, proprietor of the Thane's Den in F-2, died, shotgun in hand, defending her bar against a squad of Austronesian military officials.
- Vigo Qvist, 31, a sexual therapist and pornographer, was killed in G-Hab late Friday in a single-handed attack on a major Austro outpost which resulted in a major explosion that killed him as well as many Austro soldiers.
- Torologist Wilson Tujuh-Bakti, 27, died at the hands of Austronesian justice department officials under mysterious circumstances.
- Piloting instructor Ric Escarzaga, 29, was killed earlier this week during militant resistance activities in H-Hab which were reported by Vincenzo Datini.
- Ex-diplomat and club owner Gerhard Aerenthal, 78, was killed during a firefight between Euro and Austro troops that took place in his establishment, Reflections.

For Talaria News Service, and for all of the people of a free Perseity ... I'm Pavel Kagarlitsky.

Good evening; this is a Veritas Media special bulletin. A crisis in the effort to liberate Perseity this afternoon was inexplicably averted when Austro reinforcements comprising over fifty warships largely failed to reach Perseity after emerging from the Airlangga moebiotorus. Details remain scanty due to continued interruptions in Plex service and communications restrictions imposed by EurMil for security reasons, but it appears that upon emerging into n-space, many if not most of the Austro ships broke ranks, some even firing on their own comrades. A chaotic period ensued, during which time Europe and her allies were able to prevent the ships from reaching Perseity. More details to follow as they become available.

Good morning. This is Veritas Media, casting out of our new temporary home in A-Hab, currently restored to Euro control after Sunday's liberation expedition.

As of 0600 today, A-Hab is completely under Euro control. Using the Observatory, Euro forces worked their way into the colony and have now re-established order, with the aid of re-activated and re-equipped Colony Corps forces. Civilian casualties are reported to be light in most parts of the hab. VM reporter Talia Wade has been in communication with the leaders of the European force:
Talia's interview with Emna Ouakili follows.

Most of the administrative and diplomatic districts in C-Hab are under siege. While the Austro regime continues to govern nominally, most colony services have been shut down or crippled. VM reporter Pavel Kagarlitsky is embedded in C-Hab, where he reports to us:
Thank you. I'm here in an undisclosed location somewhere in C-Hab, where I have been for the past four days. The Austronesian administrative apparatus of the colony has been crippled by the siege and communications blackout. It is estimated that up to 5,000 Perseites and Austronesians are currently within the sectors under Euro control. While there has been sporadic fighting since Sunday, in large part there does not seem to be the will on either side to take a step that would result in potentially hundreds of civilian deaths. While it is impossible to speak with Austronesian officials on the record, there is a sense of weariness and inevitability, kept alive only by the hope of reinforcements through the moebiotorus - reinforcements that at present seem unlikely to arrive. Despite the siege conditions, food and medical aid have been provided by EurMil to those contained in this region, and I have seen no evidence that the populace here is suffering. For Veritas, I'm Pavel Kagarlitsky.

In addition, reliable reports confirm that H-Hab is essentially in an anarchic state after a large group of Perseites headed by Bhu, a citizen of Ibilao, overwhelmed Austro forces in the region. VM reporter Vin Datini has the following report on the state of affairs in H-Hab:
Vin's report, somewhat edited to take out any of the headhunting bits, but including him getting shot!

Finally, reports from the EurMil officials confirm the arrival of military support from Galatsadi, Nova Carpathia and Linnaeus. The combined forces of the Europeans and their allies now comprise over 200 warships and many thousands of troops. EurMil officials were unable to comment on matters of strategy and tactics, and cannot say when the effort to liberate the remainder of the colony will take place. However, their intention is clearly to liberate the entire colony, and to remove the Austronesian presence from Perseity entirely. We'll keep you updated as more information comes to light.

This is Briar Currow, reporting from TNS headquarters in C-Hab. Europe has invaded Perseity. Earlier this afternoon, an attack was launched using the diamondglass shell of the Observatory as an entry point.  A series of firefights broke out in A-Hab as the European forces came into conflict with Austronesian guards, with heavy losses. Shortly thereafter, European military forces, aided by local insurgents, attacked the administrative apparatus of the colony in C-Hab, killing several unarmed officials and forcing the shutdown of the Zoster and many other non-essential public services. Several major nodes of the Plex were damaged, disrupting some fib communication and other data transmission for several hours. Any number of European guerillas remain stationed in A and C-Habs, resulting in continuing sporadic violence in clashes with republican officials. Finally, a band of bloodthirsty insurgents in H-Hab took advantage of the temporary tumult and attempted to overcome republican forces there, decapitating several public officials.

The invasion has resulted in many civilian casualties; exact figures have yet to be tallied, but number in the dozens if not the hundreds so far. Republican police are currently working to re-establish order and repel those who would interfere with the operation of basic services, and are hoping to have re-established Zoster travel within twenty-four hours. All non-military ship traffic has once again been halted, both inbound and outbound. Effective as of midnight tonight, H-Hab is declared to be a maximum security zone; all citizens found outside their homes in that zone by republican police will be arrested.

In the resulting chaos, it has been reported that individuals passing themselves off as European soldiers have been traversing the habs using looted equipment and are using these to commit violent crimes. Citizens are urged to remain in their homes or similar secure places and to keep their distance from any European forces seen in the halls. Do not, under any circumstances, interfere with the work of republican police as they re-establish order throughout the colony. Further information will be forthcoming as the situation progresses.

For TNS, I'm Briar Currow.

Citizens of Perseity, good day. I am Admiral Hugo Kiemlen of Eur-Mil. As you are aware, a new torus has been built by Europe and her allies, and at present a fleet of ships stands ready to liberate you and restore democracy and order to Perseity. Negotiations with the Austronesian occupier have failed, as they have refused our request to return Perseity to our control and return peacefully through their torus. This reasonable request having been refused, we are prepared to take the colony by force of arms. New torus arrives

In an effort lauded by provincial governor Octovina Dua-Kekayaan, ambassadors and officials from Second Sphere nations, and many others, a new torus from First Sphere was officially activated this afternoon near Perseity. Governor Octovina, asked about the implications of the new torus, said, "Perseity's strategic importance has always rested on its importance for transpheric commerce and communication. The more toruses, the more important the colony. We welcome these new efforts, and look forward to cooperating with the nations responsible for its construction." At present, officials are communicating with representatives from the new torus. More details to follow as they become available.

Take care!

Talia
