I had never seen this pic before today
And just had to post it, because it's lovely...solicitous Jack and Stephen in the banyan, smiling so nicely!

Oh, that's a nice one. I wonder if that's what Stephen looks like first thing out of bed...? -cough-

BTW, the pic for your icon is great, too!

I'm pretty sure this was actually a screen cap from a production video rather than Russell in character as Jack Aubrey but I could not resist it. *g*

This is just too yummy. I love Jack's hand under Stephen's arm. It's solicitous, yet restrained. (scrolls up to look at picture again) Happy sigh.

Um, is Russell Crowe short? He always seems so larger than life.

From the man, himself: "I'm five-eleven, and a half, and a bit." So, not really. Paul Bettany is pretty tall (I think his bio says 6'3"), so Russell just looks short by comparison.

Ah. That's what it is.

I wonder why they cast Paul Bettany (not that I'm complaining)? I always got the impression Maturin was smaller than Aubrey from the books, and not good looking at all.

After seeing the movie though, I can't imagine anyone being Aubrey other than RC.

It sounds like Russell Crowe twisted Peter Weir's arm a little. *g* At least, that is how Bettany tells the story; Weir insists that Bettany was the best actor he read for the role. I think they figured they were better off casting Stephen too good-looking rather than not good-looking enough when it came to publicity and such (only in Hollywood would Janeane Garofalo be considered an UGLY girl in a cats and dogs equation). I'm sure the fact that they had good screen chemistry in ABM didn't hurt, though Weir said he was wary of people being too reminded of that at first.

I think it was Peter Weir who said something like, if they'd cast the two leads according to how the characters are described in the books, they would've looked like Laurel and Hardy, or, I keep thinking, Allen and Hollum. It really takes reading the books to find Stephen's appeal, and it would've been close to impossible to cast someone short and ugly in a film version without him being caricatured and unsympathetic, IMO.

Plus, since Stephen was supposed to be sort of representative of O'Brian, himself, I always thought the descriptions were self-depricating and exaggerated, just as Stephen's referring to Jack as obese are (if you consider his height and weight, he's not).

Laurel and Hardy! Hehehehe, that's good. And he has a point.

It's funny though, reading the books I like both characters a lot. But it's Stephen that I find the more intriging, despite the fact that he's supposed to be *ill-favored* and kind of a slob.

Yeeeeeah! Thankyou so much, cruisedirector, lovely pic!
I love the hand!!!

Yes, Paul is definitely tall. He is so suited to being tall and thin.

For the yummy pictures :)))))

I watched the vid "Duende" in the meantime, btw (darn, who made it, help me folks *searching websites*) and while it's very nice with a very well-chosen music, I realized only there that a fanon with only one movie base is (sigh) quite limited in the visual material. It's much easier to compile ambigious scenes from long-running series.

(Did they ever plan on making a sequel to M&C?)
