Shirtless Jack
You can thank [info]starfishchick for pointing this out on page 99 of The Making of 'Master and Commander'.

Let us now hope for an extended DVD that includes this scene. Because wet, shirtless Jack has got to be a good thing even if the scene is irrelevant.

I love this picture...I wonder if it was just Russell taking a dip, or if they filmed a scene with Jack going for a swim. Jack's quite an avid swimmer in the books. ALso in the books, when it's calm and the ship isn't really going anywhere, Jack and Stephen often go swimming together. Naked. WHY WAS THAT NOT IN THE MOVIE??

Also, they call each other "joy" and especially "my dear" all the time in the books. Yet in the movies "my dear" only appeared twice, with Jack's "my dear Doctor" to Stephen...and we got NONE of the "joy." Fair? I think not.

However, I did appreciate all the soulful looks between them in the movie. They were *always* staring at each other, even when the focus of the action was elsewhere. Mmmm, yummy subtext.

There's one in particular that I love, that Stephen gives Jack during "Don't Forget Your Old Shipmates" ... ye gads.

Yes! That's the best one. He looks like he wants to throw Jack down on the table and shag him silly. Guh.

Whew! Glad I'm not the only one who saw that LOOK. Was beginning to think my dirty mind was just a little too... too... *eager*. ;-)

Also, Movie!Jack calls Movie!Stephen "brother" only once, and that's in anger. "You've come to the wrong shop for anarchy, brother."

POOPIES, said she, summoning all her dignity. ;-)

I'm not a particularly good fiction writer, which I like to blame on being a science major. But y'know, free plot bunny to good home and all that. C'mon, you know you want teh plot bunny...

The most I could hope to write would be a reasonably convincing scientific paper on their mating habits.

...

Heyyyyyyy. That's not a bad idea. I have a week of vacation left.

All the looks they give each other in company make me grin. The one when Jack tells the Nelson story in particular, and again on "authority corrupts"...

???!!!???!!! *faints*

OMG, I need to find the time to read the books. Like, now. :0

A case of catering to stupid, idiotic, homophobic movie audiences who can't handle any expression of affection between two male characters. :(

That reminds me, I scanned two of the full-page Jack pics, (one in winter weather gear, and one with a telescope) if anyone's interested. I'll post them when I get home tonight.

My scanner was misbehaving, so I had to stop after two. Maybe it thought the pants were too tight... eeehhheeee!!!

I have noticed that those pants in Jack's uniform do show off Russell's junk rather well, eh? ;-)

Just checking, is that this book?

I notice that Amazon over here in the UK are doing a special offer of that and 'Jack Aubrey Commands: An Historical Companion to the Naval World of Patrick O'Brian' for £25.18 (which then qualifies for free shipping!).

Yes, that book. Has wonderful photos and is a thoroughly enjoyable read as well -- all that info about how the lanterns were made, where the wool for the costumes came from...I love movies where you feel like the people making it really cared about the details.

Oh, I have a slightly more close-up (though blurrier) shot of this! :D Must figure out the PhotoBucket thing.
I'm getting this book from the library as soon as they get their act together, and I have a very good scanner... :)
