| Six Years of the Movie |
[Nov. 14th, 2009|09:13 am] |

The movie was released on November 14th, 2003 - six years ago - and we still love it. Peter Weir, the actors and the production crew introduced a lot of us to Jack Aubrey, Stephen Maturin and the books of O'Brian. Seeing how many new members we have, the movie still works its magic. :D

| | happy | ] | Hi! ^^ I am a very, very new member of this community (and fandom), I love slash, and I saw Master and Commander when it went out in the theatres, but 'till now I didn't care about it too much. I have the classical newbye question... some good fics^^''. I read all the post in the comunity since almost the beginning, but many link are dead by now :( if some of you has maybe saved some good fanfictions...? é.è I love slash (Jack/Stephen are too easy to slash, really xD) but also good gen is ok^^ Thank you all! (PS: some TRUE artists in this comunity! There is some amazing fanarts! O_O)
PPS: sorry for any grammatical error. I am Italian :) |

| Ask a stupid questions |
[Nov. 9th, 2009|09:10 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | curious | ] | One thing that had always confused me for the Aubrey-Maturin novels (mayhaps because I don't read properly):
1) Jack would hate me for this one, but has Nelson passed away yet at the time of the series?
2) Does canon actually state a period (a year, maybe) where the series takes place?
3) Is Stephen usually on the ship "as a friend", or does he actually have an official naval rank as "surgeon"? (i.e. does he actually work under the Royal Navy?)
And PS: Sorry about the mass posting volumes by me these days folks. *somewhat embarrassed* |

| Drabble, drabble, triple drabble |
[Nov. 4th, 2009|11:34 am] |
I know only the first of these three is Jack/Stephen centric, but I was told, in caps and with exclamation marks, to post all of them here. I hope one out of three is enough to make this OT, otherwise I'll edit and take the other two down again.
All three are works of fanfiction and ergo not mine, spoiler- and warning free, and written for the drabble meme, a round-up of which I have here.
Title: Alternative Medicine Pairing, Characters: Stephen, Jack (if you are wearing your slash goggles Stephen/Jack) Length: 100 words Author's Note: Written for the_elb for the drabble meme. Prompt: Stephen being sweet!
( Alternative Medicine )
Title: The Butcher's Bill Pairing, Characters: Killick, mentions of Jack and Stephen Length: 100 words Author's Note: Written for proskynesis for the drabble meme. Prompt: KILLICK.
( The Butcher's Bill )
Title: Temptation Pairing, Characters: Stephen, Jack, mermaids Length: 300 words Author's Note: Written for grace_poppy for the drabble meme. Prompt: Stephen and mermaids, of course. Evil mermaids of temptation.

| Perfect_Duet Christmas Calendar! |
[Nov. 1st, 2009|09:01 am] |
Hello and welcome to the organization post for the long-awaited first Annual Perfect_Duet Christmas Calendar!
I know it's not December yet, but it's November 1st, so only one more month until we get started, and we all want to have enough time to work on our contributions so we can avoid the holiday stress and just enjoy the squee.
How is this going to work?
- You can reply here to claim a day (or two, or three) on which you'll post your contribution. I'm hoping we'll get all 24 days covered, and, who knows, maybe we'll even end up having more than one entry on some days. I will edit this post from time to time, adding your names to the dates you pick. Anyone volunteering to go first or last gets virtual cookies! At what time of day you post is up to you, seeing as we all live in different time zones posting 'in the morning' seems infeasible.
- As for your contribution, any size, shape or form is fine. Fics from drabble to epic length, poems, songs, drawings, comics, manips, vids, ice sculptures… anything goes.
- Content-wise: Permitted are all fic and art, whether gen, het or slash of all ratings (properly labelled). We focus on Jack/Stephen (slash or not) but welcome other pairings within the Master and Commander universe as long as Jack and/or Stephen get a mention somewhere. And, as this is for obvious reasons a no-go in the comm, no sex with or between underage characters.
Did I forget anything? Don't hesitate to let me know about any ideas or suggestions.
December 01 - mattmel December 02 - sidlj December 03 - gillianinoz December 04 - snakey December 05 – johanirae December 06 – tootsiemuppet December 07 – des_pudels_kern December 08 – latin_cat December 09 – ylla December 10 – hawaii5063 December 11 – 49thidentity December 12 – sharpiefan December 13 – nightkate December 14 – hybrid_box December 15 – latin_cat December 16 – grace_poppy December 17 – sidlj December 18 – ashley_pitt December 19 – wolfie_sara December 20 – proskynesis December 21 – teh_elb December 22 – sarlania December 23 – rose_bertin December 24 – swiss_kun |

| the making of master and commander |
[Oct. 26th, 2009|10:49 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | amused | ] | just finished 'the making of 'master and commander: the far side of the world'' by tom mcgregor (got it for nearly a song. :D). the main focus of the book is the efforts they went through to make everything as authentic as the requirements of filming would stand (and sometimes not even then; the berth deck's ceiling is inaccurately high... at five feet!).
they mentioned some details in the film which i don't think i noticed before, so now i'm rewatching it (does mowett actually recite poetry at any point in the film? or was it in a deleted scene?). there definitely are things mentioned which didn't make it to the final cut (jack saying 'put [the acheron] in the palm of my hand'; higgins performing a tooth extraction and stephen shooing him off before he can cheat his patient out of extra fees), as i think the book was written concurrently with filming, but hee. they mention that hollom's outgrowing his middie's uniform and he can't afford another; his coat sleeves are noticeably rather short. stephen also sports a fashionable 'napoleon' haircut. i guess they went with the next best thing from a wig?
the book also provides some justification for the date change from the original as well as the nationality change of the enemy ship. i was also surprised to learn how much CGI went into the film -- things like shading the water and sky. most shots of the acheron were also mostly CGI.
incidentally, they also make much mention of jack and stephen's friendship ('friendship at its purest and most platonic' ^_~) throughout the books and in the movie. 'One of the principal reasons why the O'Brian books work so joyously is, to put it at its simplest, that Jack has Stephen to play with.' XD
(also, paul bettany stated that his cello playing sounded like he was 'trying to climb into a squirrel.' maybe it was for the best that they eventually used yo-yo ma.) |

| Fic: Poison Ivy |
[Sep. 27th, 2009|08:04 am] |
Title: Posion Ivy
Raiting: PG (but with a naked Stephen...)
Summary: In which our heros end up in the southern east coast of North America and discover the wonderful plant life. Partially based off my own experiences of poison ivy, and partially over the idea of what would Steve do if he ever stepped into the vine. Just a bit of fun really and meant to be comedic.
Disclaimer: No, not mine, sadly but it's not like Patrick will ever use them again anyways...
Notes: If you do not know what Poison Ivy is or what a Magnolia is, I do suggest you google them, they are quite common to the South in America. Poision Ivy isn't deadly (Unless you scratch yourself to the point the venom gets in your blood, but that rarely happens), but it does give you one hell of a rash akin to the chicken pox, only worse...you can get it again from unwashed garments or depending on how allergic you are, from someone else.

| Some short sketches. |
[Sep. 19th, 2009|10:13 pm] |
I hope those concerned don't mind, but earlier today I wrote three short scenes/sketches (I know I said a paragraph, but then I'm never good at keeping the word count down) – one Hornblower and two Aubreyad, and I thought I might re-post them together at my journal.
Here’s the link to the Aubreyad pieces (both Jack and Stephen, both G-rated), and should anyone be interested in the Hornblower piece you need only scroll upwards.
Well yes, that’s me done for this evening. Goodnight.

| Two old ficlets: The Christmas Play & Dialogue!Snippet |
[Sep. 13th, 2009|04:46 pm] |
Because I have just been going through my masterlist and couldn't find these two here (I might of course not see what's right in front of me). And because I still need to make y'all feel bad. *crosses arms and pouts* A girl comes home after a summer of hard work and no internet, looking forward to catching up with all the great, funny, angsty, slashy fics posted to her favourite community while she was gone, and what happens? *flails* You have hardly been active at all! Ahem. Sorry. On to the so-called fics, then.
Title:The Christmas Play Pairing, Characters: Jack, Stephen, mentions Babbington and Killick Rating: G Spoilers: Tiny one for Surgeon's Mate Disclaimer: Not mine, never has been, never will be. Length: 294 words Summary: Which role is Jack to play in this year's Christmas play? Author's Note:Written two years ago as Christmassy birthday ficlet for tootsiemuppet. I am happily mixing various Christmas traditions here, the Christ Child is the Christkind of my childhood, in picture books portrayed as an angel with blond hair, looking more like a young girl than a boy… Crossposted to / originally posted at: My personal journal here, at my fic journal here. Written: December 2007
( The Christmas Play )
</fic> Now the other one...
Title: Dialogue!Snippet Pairing, Characters: Jack, Stephen Rating: PG Spoilers: Which was the book with the sloth? HMS Surprise? Spoilers for that. Disclaimer: Not mine, never has been, never will be. Length: 300 words Status: Was thought as beginning of a slash fic, but it's been months, let's just call it a gen standalone ficlet. Summary: What kind of animal is Stephen allowed to bring aboard? Author's Note: So. The Gilly and I were talking about naturalists yesterday, and of course from there the conversation went to sex and drugs. We got to the idea of drug-induced smexxing by frog-licking, and the Gilly asked " Also, why hasn't this been written in Aubreyad fandom yet? Stephen will happily drug himself to the gills anyway." Then I went to bed. And woke up at 2 am with the thought Hey, this would be a good way to start that fic! So here's the result, now all typed out (and trust me, deciphering my nightly handwriting was no fun). A bit of dialogue, not slashy, not snarky, not even funny, that, at some point, might lead to frog-induced smexxing. As always, not beta'd. | [ | mood |
| | embarrassed to death | ] | Title: Sunshine II Pairing, Characters: Jack/Stephen Rating: NC-17 Spoilers: HMS Surprise Disclaimer: Not mine, never has been, never will be. Length: 1908 words Status: One-shot, sequel to Sunshine here or here.. Summary: Dusk. It is finally getting cooler. Isn't it? Author's Note: Written for latin_cat's birthday. No sailors of the Royal Navy were teased or seduced while researching this ficlet (damn). There was topless sunbathing on deck of a ship boat little ship, though. As always, not beta'd. Even more, I fled the scene of my crime as soon as I was done, so I didn't even reread it myself. Additional comment: Ohgodohgodohgodohgod kill me now. I am so sorry! [Sep. 12th, 2009|12:05 am] |
You can sign up here for the Spook Me Multi-Fandom Halloween Ficathon.
Jack and a Tentacle Monster? Stephen and an Aquatic Monster? Jack/Stephen and a Vampire/Zombie/Dinosaur?
You get to choose! Or you can have a monster assigned to you if you can't pick one. And you'll receive two other prompts when you sign up, for inspiration purposes. You only need to use one of the three.
It's all extremely low-key, so if you sign up and need/want to drop out there's absolutely no hassle. It's all for fun. Spooky fun, smutty fun, silly fun - wherever your muse takes you.
Sign-ups end September 15th.
(This is the story I submitted last year. It's a gen Stargate SG-1 twist on the classic Phantom Hitchhiker scenario. :-) |
