Slash, but not necessarily... [Jul. 3rd, 2009|06:37 pm]

latin_cat
Hallo! I don't know if this will work for those of you outside the UK, (or you could possibly get it podcast, I don't know) but on this week's episode of the BBC Radio 4 programme I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue - a comedy panel game in which the teams are given 'silly things to do' and nobody ever wins - one of things the teams had to do was leave answerphone messages for famous people; the first candidate being Lord Nelson.

I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue; Episode 3

The Nelson section begins specifically at 12:46, but it's worth listening to the whole show as it gives a good giggle.

first post and a question! [Jun. 28th, 2009|09:20 am]

torsui
hey, all. bought 'master and commander' a few months ago and am slowly making my way through the series -- am up to 'the fortune of war' at the moment. (did anybody else notice a rather high number of typos in their copy of 'desolation island'? i counted five or six at least on my first runthrough.)

i know the community info says videos are welcome here, but what about mp3s? i got my hands on the afternoon play version of 'HMS surprise' which i'd like to share with you all. :D and some of the audiobooks, which put a whole new shine on the books, i think.

A suggestion for later in the year... [Jun. 28th, 2009|01:25 pm]

des_pudels_kern
I know it's way too early to be thinking about this, but I should be working on an essay and my mind keeps getting sidetracked, so maybe putting the idea out here will let me concentrate again.

How about we do a Christmas calendar this year? 24 people (or more...), 24 days, each person picks or gets assigned a day, and we all find a new morsel of Aubreyad goodness on our flist each day while waiting for Christmas, be it art, fic, or anything else fandomy.

If people are interested (and I'm sure in a fandom like ours there will easily be 24 volunteers), I'll do a proper sign-up post in November.

So, non-binding, who'd in theory be willing to participate?

*raises hand* (Yes, I know, big surprise.)

EDIT: 14 people, and that's half a year before the event. I think we'll be fine!

This is the last of them, I promise.

Finished in a rush yesterday because I wanted to cheer [info]des_pudels_kern  up.

Everyone knows midshipmen are the redshirts of the Aubreyad.

Obviously based on this.

This was finished literally one minute to midnight!

HAHA, I rock.

I present to the viewing public, the scruffiest half-Vulcan in the history of ever. (Lol, this so explains Stephen's sex drive).

Gift for Zed_PM [Jun. 24th, 2009|09:37 pm]

tootsiemuppet
For [info]zed_pm , who requested "anything Star Trek or Master and Commander. A crossover of the two would be extra awesome".

*snugs* Thank you again, Zed. The only thing that is extra awesome here is you.

That's right, Flora. STFU.

These are not Jack/Stephen, but there are all Stephen-centric, so I hope it is okay to post them here. I know I said that I was writing tribble-fic, but this bunny bit and refused to let go.

Title: When God shall come from the sea with a sigh
Rating: PG
Summary: It's Aubreyad, but not as you know it. Sidhe, fallen angels, and lots of Yeats references.
Author's Note: 'I am heartily glad of it,' said Jack, and he carried on into the great cabin, where Stephen sat lashed into an elbow-chair, looking like an ancient child. - The Commodore

For the world's more full of weeping than he can understand.

These are another two fics that I wrote a while ago - they are very dark.  They were written for the Show the Colours Kink Meme, but take place before the RPG and the canon, so are just Stephen fics. There is another fic that comes between the two of them - Young Stephen Maturin meets Father Curtis (from Sharpe) - but I do not know if I will finish it, or post it if it is completed. The first takes place at the beginning of the November of Stephen's fourteenth year, and the second on the one of the last days of the following August.

Title: Untitled, in response to prompts
Rating: 15
Summary: These were both fics written in response to prompts on the StC Kink Meme, dealing with Stephen's childhood.
Warning: These contain non-consensual sexual situations with a fourteen year-old.

First times. What was each character's first time like? (Can be first kiss, first time with the opposite sex, first time with the same sex, etc.)

Wellesley/Stephen - The two met in Dublin when Stephen was 15 and spoke little English and Arthur Wellesley was 21, and very bored with his life. Both insist that the meeting only took a few seconds, but both remain extremely embarrassed by it. What really happened?

It's been over a year since I made one of these playable shadow boxes.

This one was inspired by...oh, you guess the film...

Tall Ships Festival [Jun. 7th, 2009|01:23 pm]

black_rider
[info]ylla 's post reminded me... (thanks!)
I'm not sure how many of you guys are anything near local to Dana Point, California, but the Tall Ships Festival is coming up in September.

I make a point to go every year, because even though it's overrun with tacky pirate vendors, they offer harbor cruises in addition to concerts and walking tours of the ships.  Really fabulous, and I totally recommend it.  If you plan on attending, let me know and we can all meet up for turkey legs and grog.

Aubreyad moment [Jun. 7th, 2009|09:07 pm]

ylla
[mood | amused]

I had a lovely Aubreyad moment last weekend, when I was on the paddlesteamer Waverley (my first love, ship-wise) for the Western Isles cruises she was doing.

There was some kind of crossover with the Mendelssohn on Mull music festival, which meant that some of the musicians performed a new arrangement of the Hebrides Overture on the journey. It was a bit more than the usual Stephen and Jack music - two cellos, two violas, and four violins, I think - but the combination of music and sea was perfect.
And the man two along from me was nodding his head to the music the whole time, and at one point joined in with with a phrase. I was more amused than annoyed, though :)

*misses the sea*

Slightly rather extremely tangential post here, but on the off-chance that someone here might be interested...just happened across the following 10-minute BBC radio programme (available for the next 5 days) on iPlayer: David Attenborough discussing fascinating facts about sloths. :)

Aubreyad hammock question [Jun. 7th, 2009|07:33 pm]

johanirae
[mood | curious]

Believe me, I clicked around for an answer to my question, but I guess the sleeping habits of captains and surgeons in 1800 british navy isn't the most pressing topic for most historians:

Thing is, we all see plenty of hammocks in the lower decks for the marines and sailors. Where exactly does the Captain sleep (as in: on a hammock, or on a bed)? And while we're on the topic, is it mentioned anywhere in the series that Stephen gets seperate quarters too, or does he generally bunk in with the crew?

I'm on Mauritius Command so far, and I recall reading in the books before of Jack conking out immediately as soon as he entered his cabin, but I can't remember if it said he fell asleep in a bed or hammock...

Er, it's for a comic I'm drawing now, although I have to admit it's no where as racy as the question might imply. Sadly. LOL

Many thanks to [info]ozfille  for sending me these!! *cough* But what with the moot and all I only now got around to actually scanning them:

Big pictures behind the cut. Dial-up users, consider yourselves warned.

Moot '09 - Fic Dump #4 [Jun. 2nd, 2009|03:47 pm]

latin_cat
Last one! Some fluff to finish with. ;) Thanks for being patient with me.

Title: Swimming
Rating: 15
Pairings: Jack/Stephen
Summary: Jack and Stephen’s first kiss. Set during the final chapters of HMS Surprise.
Author's Note: For [info]esteven. This was inspired by [info]wicked_warrior's beautiful picture here (2nd cut). Such a picture needed fic, and I hope I’ve done it justice.
