"Little Nautilus" XXVII Odysseas Elytis [Oct. 11th, 2008|01:54 pm]

spyro_prime
IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME TO UNDERSTAND what humility means,
and it's the fault of those who taught me to place it on
the opposite pole of pride. You must tame the Concept of
Existence inside you, if you are to understand it.

One day, as I felt everything has abandoned me, and a great
sorrow was slowly falling into my soul, while walking in
those pastures with no salvation, I pulled a little branch
out of an unknown bush. I cut it and brought it to my upper
lip. Immediately (as I did this) I understood that Man is
Innocent. I decyphered this from the odour, sour from the
Truth, so intensely, that it made my steps follow it lightly,
with my heart like an Apostle's. Till, very deeply, I became
fully conscious of the fact, that all religions are lying.

Yes! Paradise was not a Nostalgia, nor (even more so) a Reward.
It was a Right.

All right, the outline has been finished and emailed out. Now, I just have to wait and see if she likes what I want to do with the novel. A contract should be waiting in my mailbox by the time I get home tonight. (For some reason, despite the fact that I haven't eaten or drank anything yet today, I've just developed an atrocious case of the hiccups. Why god why?)

I'm positively ecstatic. Still on the fence about if I should ask an agent to check out the contract. Unless I'm getting an advance, I don't think it's particularly necessary, and I don't see an advance anywhere on the horizon for this new publisher, and an ebook on top of that. The romance field works a little differently than the rest of the publishing world. (But hey, it would be nice.)

О постоянстве [Oct. 11th, 2008|09:54 am]

Finished the handwritten outline. Why can't I outline on the PC? I have no idea. It's just one of those strange writer-brain mysteries. But in any case, it's finished, and I'll type it up tomorrow morning to flip through at work and see if it seems to promote a good flow, if there's anything missing, etc. I want to look like a real go-getter sort of author, so giving her an outline within 24 hours is exactly the kind of thing I want to do.

Then I'll have a shiny, shiny contract to salivate over. Still on the fence about if I should get an agent for this--I don't think I should, but I guess I'll wait and see the contract first. Since Lori Perkins is 1/3 of the company, and she's a major famous agent, I highly doubt there will be anything questionable in the contract. I look forward to this job. I can do 1,000 words a day, after all. I did that for, what, five months with Priyti? Six? It was a long time. (God, I love that book, flaws and all.)

Well, now that you've all had time to absorb that capslock, here's the details.

They're buying the short story flat out. It's going to act as a prequel to the novel, which is going to chronicle how the Luke/Eve/Jason triangle eventually becomes a romantic unit with at least a "happy for now" ending. I won't actually be getting the contract until I finish writing this outline/synopsis for her. I've got 20 out of the 50k outlined for her, and I'm trying to appear responsible and quick-working by having it done tonight. Of course, plotting an entire book would be a lot harder if it wasn't an erotic romance novel.

The deadline will be around two-three months for 50k, which is about 850 words a day for two months, and less for three. That is, I think, very manageable considering how a sex scene not only takes up a good 1-2k on its own, but is also easy to write.

The excitement hits me at strange moments. A book, oh, my. A real book. I haven't quite started thinking about agents and things, because I don't think it'll be that kind of contract, but I still might have someone look over it for me. Contract-in-hand is a good way to get an agent, let me tell you. It's just that most people who will represent erotic romance wouldn't represent "Priyti." Maybe I'll find somebody.

I find the topic of the 2008 chemistry Nobel prize really cool: A fluorescent protein that could be used to track living cells, and can potentially be used for investigating unknown disease mechanisms.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20081008-2008-chemistry-nobel-prize-goes-those-who-lit-up-cells.html

And performing a cell mutation to shift the wavelength of the fluorescent emission toward yellow, wow !!! a well deserved recognition.

I am impressed, and excited; feel like picking up my school books again.

Доказывающая, что среди американцев есть трезвомыслящие люди, а не только те, кто смотрит всякую ерунду по CNN. Честно - удивительно. И статья, и комментарии - совсем не то, что я ожидала от издания с названием American conservative и ее читателей.

My Letter to American Television:

Stop remaking mt favorite British TV shows. Stop it. Just. Please. "Life on Mars" is not the same show without John Simm, no matter how hard you try to recreate every goddamned camera angle. Why couldn't you have just played it for us? Do you think we don't understand British accents? The SciFi channel plays Doctor Who! Why, why, why can't you offer the same respect to a brilliant set of actors and their brilliant show?

Also, "Eleventh Hour" shouldn't have been remade. That guy does not have the necessary charisma for the role. Eugh. Really not.

Stop it, please god, just stop. How about you play the originals, so maybe the average nasty couch potato can get some culture in their lives? And a little John Simm never hurt anybody.

You bastards.
