i've been reading one piece lately, from the beginning, and I'm loving it so hard. I'm also reading the latest amazon arch. today's chapter made me cry a little ):
i wonder...was he not effected because he's "made of rubber" or because he's so pure hearted (and/or dumb) that he doesn't think like that? he did say it was slowing him down so...i dunno.

| Thoughts from a lunch break |
[Oct. 6th, 2008|11:48 am] |
Just registered to vote. So easy! In a college town like this, they don't even require proof of address. Though they mail the card to you, so I guess that works as regulation.
I would be remiss if I didn't talk about Pendulum. It was absolutely fantastic; the best concert I've been to. So what if my hearing didn't come back completely (I think) until Sunday? Totally worth it, and I'll think of it every time I hear the songs from now on.
I've been nostalgia-ing lately. It is, honestly, inevitable with the Autumn and finding the old Trinada boards. It did come at a good time, though, when I was feeling kind of a creative rut. It is really ironic that back then, when I felt so creative, I was really drawing off a lot of things that I'd seen or played lately. But that's the thing - a lot of creativity is in yur own perception. (as I try to tell anyone who insists they are not creative at all).
Which brought me way back. I remember getting into D&D later than everyone else in my group, because I wasn't really integrated into the loop until later. And I remember my reactions to it, but they didn't come back until I looked at some writing from around the same time.
They were: 1) Lord, this is complicated. 2) So that's where all those spells/references/monsters came from. 3) This is pretty neat, especially the prestige classes! Ooh, Pale Masters! 4) This is kinda risky. If I'm not careful, this will form a framework for how I think about fantasy as a whole in the future.
And I'm afraid to say that #4 did happen, at least for a while. I eventually got back to thinking of things in my own terms, but it's really easy to do - with D&D, so many rules and options are already laid out for you that you don't really -have- to think and develop on your own!
It's just that thinking and developing on your own is the best part. I'm not just picking on D&D here - I think pretty much every RPG system is guilty of this. oWorld of Darkness, for all its fancy essays, did a lot of the same by the time it was done. It's the fundamental problem with RPGs to me: books full of rules save you time in making rulings and make things (more) fair. They give people a toolbox to make their characters out of.
But at the same time, you can only grab the things in the toolbox. For instance, D&D eventually introduced "good" undead, kind of guardian spirits. But there was no way to be a necromancer who could summon these noble ghosts. If you wanted to do that, you'd have to cobble it together from other rules.
This is why more open systems appeal, and it's part of the reason the old message board RPGs were so fun. They got horrily unbalanced and frustrating, too, but that possibility just made things cool. It's what let an incredibly simple concept like Hellslayer hold our interest for months.
That's it for now. I still like D&D, but I sometimes wonder what young geeks wuld come up with, if there weren't so many premade and ready to go fantasy worlds for them to just pick up.
(And I do see MMOs as an evolution of this trend, at least for some people. Kind of an unfortunate one.) |

| Productively unproductive, or unproductively productive? |
[Oct. 4th, 2008|12:21 am] |
I had a fairly well-balanced day today, nicest one I've had all week really! I think part of the anger is the oncoming of the red wave, the crimson tide, whatever fun thing you'd like to call it... woman plague... bloodpocalypse? YES.
Anyway, I both relaxed a lot and did a lot of productive things. I finally plotted out my monthly bills and figured out that they've grown enormously, by about $300, since moving here and gas prices rising and other such things. Luckily, I've combated it a little bit, and saved about 30 dollars so far. Of course, my credit card payments are factored into the bills, so once they get low enough or zeroed, I will be saving about 100 a month there as well. That's a much better dent. I just want to get them paid down quickly, in light of an emergency during winter break, where I will have 0 income for 4 weeks (oh god).
The few things that lowered it already were:
1. We inquired about a smaller storage unit. Right now, we're using a 10x10, at 65/month, which is about 22 bucks a person. We're downsizing, though, because it's only half full... appropriately, to a 5x10, which will cost 50, about 17 a person. So, there's 5 bucks? Haha. Hey, it's something...
2. I've been shelling out an average of $90 a month in cell phone bills lately, which I always thought sounded high, but of course my lazy ass never investigated it until now when I had a lot of free time (it's when I organize best, micromanaging can really only carry so far in my life). It turns out all the 411 charges have been accumulating about $10-12 extra each bill, lately. I think the last time I used it was when I broke my key, though, and that was necessary. So, it won't be hard to cut that out. Additionally, I recognized that I never, never ever, eeeeever get near my maximum usage for anytime minutes. The most I've used is about 300 out of 900. I also pay for anytime messaging. So, I looked into the other plans and discovered there was a 450 anytime minutes plan... with unlimited messaging. For the same price as my current plan, minus the added on anytime messaging. How can I say no to that? So, I downgraded my plan, and actually upgraded the messaging as a result, and I'll save about 25 dollars in the long run.
I'm not out of the financial hole yet, but I'm getting there, and cutting these corners should help out quite a bit. It's $30 more I can swing toward getting my cards paid down.
I also cleared out my gmail. I archived like... 250 messages yesterday and today. I deleted about a third of them, too. There was stuff from when I first obtained internet here in Georgia... damn, I was lazy. I don't think I'll let that happen again, ahaha. Now my inbox is delightfully empty, although a bit lonely.
Finally, I cleaned my room up a lot. There were a lot of useless papers lying around, bills that needed shredding, etc. It's not perfect, but it's quite pristine compared to before.
It'll get even better next week, when I get a desk. Yessssssssssssssss. Things are looking up! And the best part is, it's the weekend, and that means I can continue to have two more days of this lovely balancing act before charging head on into my short work week. Fall break next week! Woo hoo! Bad for money, good for the soul... I'll make up the money somehow, I'm sure!
Oh, and seriously: expect an AWA post tomorrow. I'm rejuvinated because Bob made gifs finally. YAAAAYAYAYAYAY. yay. yessss. YEAH........ yeah.

I'm about half way through Deadman Wonderland and I haven't decided if it's so insane that it's brilliant or so brilliant it's insane.
It really reminds me of an anime form of SuperJail. Of which the warden of Super Jail reminds me of Josh from my comic EvilCo., if I'd ever work on it.. |

| A return to form |
[Oct. 2nd, 2008|12:21 pm] |
Recently was google's birthday, apparently. So they let everyone search through old pages, using the internet archive projects. This turned up some unexpected gems.
The main one, of course, being Trinada forums. There's a lot of really funny and a lot of really cringe-inducing things on there. I saved a bunch of it, being nostalgic. I'd really thought most of that was gone forever. For better or worse, it is not. About half of the really big RPG threads survived; enough to get a feel for it.
And it's good because I didnt keep a journal then, and this is one of the best ways to see what I was actually writing instead of just what I remember writing.
It really does take me back in a way that I couldn't have expected.
Jill points out that I have lost most of my angst and the particular edge it gave my writing. But mostly that I don't write much anymore, except in this journal. Which is true. Unfortunate, but true. I keep saying that I will pick up on that, but I'm saying it again. Because I do dearly miss it, and I keep becoming halfway afraid that I've lost the knack. (Though I must admit, a lot of my old writing falls under the category of 'creative recycling' from whatever I was interested in at the time.)
It was just a weird turn of events, since I got an email yesterday that reminded me of Tenekh, (MorbId's original name) and got a phone call from my parents about Dragon magazines (which used to be one of the coolest things around, let's face it) and so on. I guess fall brings out the nostalgia in me. Just as usual.
I actually have a half-finished portrait of all my characters that I should finish as well..
Anyways, it sure would be nice if I had an old, ad-free livejournal account to post random writings on or something. Oh well. |

| Weary and wall-eyed |
[Oct. 1st, 2008|11:49 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | irritated | ] | No significance to the subject, I just thought it sounded nifty.
It turned out that one of the professors was sick today, so I had one less thing to do than I originally though. I'm thankful, really. I lost a few hours, but I gained the time to relax a little. Took a nap today, and still got all but micro done, which I will pump into the long haul tomorrow most likely.
I have a couple of non-computer things I want to do, but I'm not sure I want to keep myself awake. I tapped off on caffiene again, with less effects than last night when I was tossing and turning until 3AM, so that's good and I'm really leaning toward just going to bed. I do have things to do though, and I guess it would be good for my eyes to focus on something not a digital screen for more than a few minutes. Between work and play, computers seem to be all I do.
I usually don't mind it, but lately, my eyes really have started to protest.
This entry is surprisingly inverse to my overall state of mind. I'm still very angry, at people, both that I know and don't know. In some cases, it's just crankiness, but in others, the persons in question are just ridiculous. I'm tired of wasting the energy, though, it will probably stop soon one way or the other and there's no use whining about them.
Oh right my laundry has been sitting around for days now hasn't it? Better put that away before I go to bed, at least. |
