SMOS Dinner tonight!

So I am hosting our next SMOS dinner!! It is today anytime after 2pm (dinner will be served around 5pm). I am located in New Baltimore.

The new beach just opened up down the street for swimming and we will be grilling hot dogs and chicken for dinner. Please bring a side dish to pass if you can and also a lawn chair if you have one.

We will be serving dinner, socializing, talking Penguicon 7.0 and playing games.

Superstruct, A New Game of Super-collaboration

A new type of game is emerging to change the world through generating massive collaboration on problem-solving. Penguicon's Gaming Guest of Honor, Jane McGonigal, is at the forefront of this method. Her latest work is participating in the Ten-Year Forecast team at the Institute for the Future in the construction of a new Alternate Reality Game, "Superstruct". To borrow a term from Aaron Diaz of the webcomic Dresden Codak, I would call Superstruct an example of a Historical Preenactment Society! From the Superstruct FAQ Page:

Superstruct is the world’s first massively multiplayer forecasting game. By playing the game, you’ll help us chronicle the world of 2019--and imagine how we might solve the problems we'll face. Because this is about more than just envisioning the future. It’s about making the future, inventing new ways to organize the human race and augment our collective human potential.

Superstruct is played on forums, blogs, videos, wikis, and other familiar online spaces. We show you the world as it might look in 2019. You show us what it’s like to live there. Bring what you know and who you know, and we’ll all figure out how to make 2019 a world we want to live in.

The game starts September 22, 2008, and it will last for six weeks. Email superstruct@iftf.org now to receive an alert when Superstruct launches.

Some Exciting New Projects

Of course, vacation, when housed between those sarcastic little double-quotes, really means that I will do just as much work, but for no pay; I am truly a glutton for punishment. I saw this in mrissa's journal, and I thought it was something I'd like to discuss with the Penguicon peeps:

When jimhines asked for advice for first-time convention-goers, one of the things I advised was to have the fun you're having. Don't worry about whether someone somewhere else in the con is having additional fun. This will almost always happen, and if you are having all possible fun at that con, it's a pretty small or pretty crappy con. If you're enjoying what you're doing, don't worry about whether you're missing something else you might enjoy; and if you're not enjoying what you're doing, do something different.

Recorded live at the June 20 SMOS dinner. Some Penguicon matter is discussed, however, this is mostly an hour of banter amongst friends. Proof positive that introducing a swearing count bell only makes me swear WORSE. The sound quality certainly suffered some for being outside, but we muddled through.

The Command Line Podcast, and Penguicon Software Dev

In a recent episode of The Command Line Podcast (MP3 link), Penguicon participant cmdln ran my call to the listener feedback line. The clip is at the one minute fifty second mark. I responded to cmdln's monologue about volunteerism, and I put out a call for worldwide volunteers in our upcoming con-running software development effort, which will be hosted at Penguicon.net. Already Paul Fischer of Balticon has responded to join the effort and bring many interested friends. We also have Dmitri Zagidulin, who many of you know from Penguicon. We are contacting some other organizations as well.

I've got the car, I've got the petrol, I've got a chocolate ritual to do, and I sure could use someone else to drive. I'm out of work at 10a today and hope to be on the road shortly after that.
