Arduino Hacking Workshop description/information
Since the description's not on the site yet, and there's about a month to go before Penguicon, I figured I should at least post this here to get the word out and give people a chance to make preparations for the workshop.

The description:
Come and play with an easy to use, open embedded hardware/software platform, the Arduino. There will be a short presentation about the platform, followed by demonstrations and/or general hacking. More information can be found here: http://www.glacialcommunications.com/arduino.html

Also, If anyone has any project ideas, let me know. I have a few things in mind, but I'm otherwise open to suggestions.

Maybe arduino in the beer home-brewing market? exscuse-me

My bias is showing.

Actually this is tremenduously exciting for me and scary for my wife, but I for one welcome our arduino powered overlords.

Yes, you need to build a Kegbot for consuite which tracks who drinks what and how much, using those RFID chips that come inside tin cans the size of a nickel.

I've seen a couple of projects out there - a kegerator thermostat, and this proof-of-concept single-step mash controller.

It really comes down to finding a process you can automate, the appropriate sensors (for input) and the right way to control whatever it is you're controlling...

I want to make a contractor's quick and hassle-free time tracking device. And when I say quick and hassle-free, I mean ruthlessly so. It's a device that clips to the belt. I want to use a comfortably large dial that can be turned to two positions, vertical and horizontal. First lifting the sheild that prevents accidental switching, when I turn the dial to vertical, I'm on the job. When it's horizontal, I'm pausing my paid work to answer Penguicon emails or fix a sandwich. It records the exact times of switching back and forth, and totals up the time spent in the "on" position. This record can be downloaded to the computer through USB or something.

This seems like it's relatively doable.

Electronically, you'll need something to get the time (like this Real-time clock) and then something to store the timestamps onto (the built-in storage on an arduino board is 512 bytes, which may not be sufficient...) - USB memory stick? Then you just have to remove the stick and attach it to your computer.

You're on your own for an appropriate switch/enclosure ;-)

I looked at a number of Arduino vids on YouTube and some of the stuff people come up with is pretty neat. It'll be interesting to see it done live.
