Cranes for Peace started out quite simply, as a journal entry, about finnian's experience after talking to a survivor of the Hiroshima A-bomb attack. It was originally a private entry before friends encouraged making it public in order to spread the word. Immediately after, finnian made small icons of paper cranes, all of which link back to said journal entry. (This might even be the reason why you're here now!) The news travelled fast, and thankfully, Cranes for Peace was well received. The main way Cranes for Peace works is something similar to "paying it forward," only with cranes! The suggestion was made that people should write messages in their paper cranes, fold them and leave them out where a complete stranger could pick them up, and what could be better than that? People can write anything from kind words to hopes and dreams and even facts about the bombing of Hiroshima. Then, whoever picks up the crane is encouraged to make one of their own and pass their own messages on to others. In this way Cranes for Peace keeps going on and on, and sometimes it even comes full circle! Don't be surprised if you find a new crane in the place of your old one. The LiveJournal community for Cranes for Peace was created after several LJ users suggested that one be made. In the spirit of what the project is meant to promote, this should be a community where everyone can feel at ease and included. After all, without other people to spread the word, Cranes for Peace would have gone nowhere! A group on Facebook was created with the same idea in mind, and you are welcome to join either or both. If by chance you have not read the original Cranes for Peace entry, you can do so by clicking the website link above. community rules! 1.) It goes without saying that the biggest rule in the community is fairness. It's important to respect everybody else's opinion, regardless what your own are. If you disagree, there are easier ways to express that without rudely telling somebody how wrong they are. If a fight breaks out in the community, the people responsible risk being banned. 2.) Please keep in mind that while Cranes for Peace was started after having met a survivor from Hiroshima, the idea encompasses everyone and is not limited to Japan. Cranes for Peace isn't about turning other people away just because they have nothing to contribute to the discussion of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (which will probably come up). 3.) While being "on topic" is kind of a broad subject for Cranes for Peace, please try to stick to it. For example, you could talk about how you saw a crane on the bus or in a classrom, or you could talk about, say, the war in Iraq. But you can't talk about your new shoes. (Don't worry. We still think they're cute.) If you're still unsure of what you can and can't post, ask! 4.) Outside "drama" will not be tolerated. If you don't like someone else in the community, just don't talk to them. Like rule #1 states, don't start any fights. 5.) And most importantly, have fun! Get along! introduce yourselves! Members are welcome (and encouraged!) to introduce themselves to others. You can do that however you want, but if you can't come up with anything, feel free to use this simple form as a guide. credits & resources!
