Brainscan #23 out now!

Brainscan #23 is done! I had it put together in time for the 2008 Portland Zine Symposium… actually I got my copies back the day that it started!

Brainscan #23 contains a few stories taken from a one off zine I did as well as a few new stories. My favorite one is about a situation I was in while visiting NYC and met and Ex-Boyfriend and his wife...and hilarity ensues. Interspersed in the zine are “travel stories that didn’t really go as far as the travel written about” These are almost like postcards written about silly situations and fun, and not so fun times. Some of the stories included are about high school road trips and Salt Lake City urban legends, touring with a band, spending a summer using auto drive away to move other peoples’ cars, and both the Cut & Paste and Copy & Destroy zine tours in 2003.

The last two issues of Brainscan have been very focused on single subjects, but this one is about amusing stories and life experiences woven with my usual high contrast cut and past layout expressing the play between words and images… as some people call it, typical Brainscan zine. If you like Brainscan you will probably like it. 40 pages ¼ legal. This is the first printing and leftovers from the zine symposium, later versions will have a different into, but the content will remain the same.

Hey Zine folks. I just wanted to remind you that the 8th annual Portland Zine Symposium is happening August 23-24th in Portland, Oregon. For me info you should go to www.pdxzines.com for more info. We still have some tables left so feel free to sign up for one.

We are also looking for people to lead panel discussions and workshops. Go HERE if you have an idea for a workshop that you would like to teach or a panel idea that you would like to have.

I am happy to announce that the IPRC is accepting registrations for Zine Camp 2008! Hurray!

Camp is July 15th to August 15th, on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 12-5.

The campers meet at the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) in downtown Portland. Camp is geared towards self-expression and empowerment through open access to space, information and materials necessary to create your own projects.

Campers will be privy to all sorts of insider information on how and why to publish their own work. They'll learn the history of zines, meet real live zinesters, participate in readings, take workshops in zine construction and design, go on field trips, and participate in the seventh annual Zine Symposium.

Cost of enrollment is $125. with scholarships available. Please contact A.M. at annmarieomalley@gmail.com regarding registration, scholarship opportunities, or any other questions you may have regarding Zine Camp.

Campers should be between the ages of 12 and 17. Preference is given to first time campers.

Hey there. I just wanted to let all of you who sell your zines on Etsy that there is a Etsy Team Zine…and you are welcome to join if you sell zines in your shop If you would like to be incluced and I'll pass your shop on to The Powers That Be at Etsy. Get ahold of me on etsy: http://Brainscan.etsy.com (and check out my shop!)

I would encourage you to spread the word to other zine folks on Etsy and off. Here’s the general theme:

"The Etsy Zine Team is a collection of zine writers that seeks to bring together the zine contingent on Etsy, raise awareness of zines within Etsy, and bring other zine editors to Etsy creating a vibrant and diverse selection of independently published titles available on the site."

On top of that I want to emphasize that I don’t expect this to be a totally involved or intense commitment that makes your head spin with heaps of promo work…it seems that most Etsy street teams just expect more than I have to offer in time and energy, and a lot of zine people have expressed the same concern.

Here are some ideas that I have been kicking around as ways to support Team Zine in your own shop or other places on the internets:

-Mention being part of “Team Zine” in your shop announcement and/or in your Etsy profile.
-Using “Team Zine” as a tag in your zine listings in your shops.
-When making promo rounds at different internet sites (myspace, facebook, livejournal, etc.) for your new issues or promos mention being part of “Team Zine” on Etsy.
-Write in your blogs (or whatever you call you internet spaces) about Team Zine
-Encourage other folks who create zines and sell them on Etsy to send me their shop info so they can join Team Zine.
-Post in the Etsy Forums about Team Zine….. Better yet, do searches for the word “zine” in the forums and post about team zine or how awesome zines are to generally raise more awareness of them.
-when you have a new issue that you post about or you see a thread in the Etsy forums that you would like us to comment in, let us know so we can support you in the awesomeness that is zines. Mymy pointed this one out to me: http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5572072

Let me know if you have any other ideas. I’m thinking later we could organize some sort of flier swap or maybe even create some sort of logo we could all use in our listings. Maybe declare and international zine day or month or some sort of big zine trade, or team wide PIF listing or something. But, that comes later. Right now is about raising awareness, supporting eachother, and connecting awesome zine folks together!

Call For Submissions – Chronic Pain Zine!

Please take part in my yet-to-be named Chronic Pain Zine project. I am looking for anyone interested in submitting writing or easy-to-reproduce visual art/comics on the subject and experience of Chronic Pain.

Personally, I’m not as interested in pain management (drugs, therapies, treatments) as in the social and emotional aspects of living with chronic pain. I want to hear about the way persistent pain impacts people’s lives, relationships, and the way that they inhabit their bodies and communities. How has the pain experience informed how people identify themselves, how they feel about their bodies, and how they ask for help? In what way has pain pushed them toward change? Ideally this zine will be about support, sharing, and respecting what we’ve been through with pain. Below are some ideas I’ve brainstormed for pieces… anyone want to run with any of these topics?

- Asking for help in a Do-It-Yourself community
- Body Image / Identity and Chronic Pain
- Sex and Chronic Pain
- Chronic Pain and Introspection / Change
- Relationships and Chronic Pain
- Creativity and Chronic Pain
- Mental Health / Depression and the Pain Experience

- Upbringing / How were you raised to approach pain?
