  • 15:31 Now they're repainting my office. It's going to be hummus coloured. Off white would be nicer; better than mustard w/aubergine trim at least! #

Attempting to make sense of my aching heart [07 Oct 2008|10:50pm]

[ music | INXS, "Not Enough Time" (Welcome To Wherever You Are) ]

Playing Wii Tennis with our Obama and McCain-inspired Miis: surely the best post-debate activity available, short of drinking one's self into an unfeeling stupor.

Not that I was watching the debate; I was upstairs, writing (total count now 81,630). I get angry and frustrated whenever I watch Politics In Action, anyway, so it was probably best for my blood pressure and general stress level to stay away.

I am failing at going to bed at night on time and I am failing at getting up in the morning on time. You'd think I'd be succeeding at at least one or the other.

Looking forward to the three-day weekend, despite the hit to my paycheck. No big plans, just the usual: pictures, Mega Man 9, and movies. I have four movies lined up to watch: Planet of the Apes (the original, which I've never seen), Casino Royale (which I saw and didn't love, but am willing to give a second chance due to the impending arrival of Quantum of Solace), Munich (Spielberg rocks), and Silence of the Lambs (mainly so I can (a) give it back to Tim and Allie, and (b) stop having people stare at me, agog, when I tell them I haven't seen it).

Regarding photography, I think I'm now addicted to lenses. I've barely taken the shrink wrap of my first prime lens, and I'm already thinking about getting another. It makes sense; I got the 50mm for portraits and such, but I'd like a longer lens for landscapes and candid portraiture (in other words, taking pictures of people from across the street without them noticing me). It'll be a long while before I can afford one, but it's nice to look and dream and plan.

Speaking of things which cost money, I'm becoming more and more worried that my computer won't last until I can afford a new one (late February, probably). Which would actually be okay -- I can check my email and stuff on my iPhone -- I just really want it to last until I'm done with the novel (anytime between mid-November and late December, I'm guessing). I don't want to lose this momentum.

So, fingers crossed for my poor, tired computer everyone. I'm trying not to overtax it's poor logic board too much, but I feel like it's just going to give out any day now.

Early days [07 Oct 2008|03:18pm]

For the people who aren't involved with the [info]artsomofo challenge, here's a rundown of my stuff for the first week.

Days 1 through 6, cut in case you've already seen them in the community posts. )

So far the challenge has been almost the opposite of what I expected. I wanted to do "quick and dirty" collages on paper so I could experiment with color and composition and not get too attached to any one piece. Instead, I've been spending all day every day meticulously sewing each of these mini quilts by hand. I'm not complaining! It's been a lot of work but I'm pretty happy with the results.

VeganMoFo #4: Scrawny, inactive vegans. [07 Oct 2008|02:02pm]
solteronita
I've been a recreational (i.e. slooooow) distance runner off and on for about a decade, participating in races varying in length from 3.1 miles to 26.2 miles. I was vegetarian for over 8 of those years, and I've been vegan for the past year and a half. What have I noticed since cutting out animal products and taking a year off from running due to (not running related) injury? My endurance had increased, and my recovery time has decreased. I'm able to build up mileage with ease, and even after running a half marathon, I'm not sore or tired the next day, which is not something I could have said in the past. Sure, I don't live in a bubble and there are certainly other factors that could be contributing to my performance, but no matter what the real reason is, no one can say that a vegan diet is not conducive to athleticism.

Luckily, there are some great vegan products out there to help fuel my running habit. My favorites:

- Clif Shot Bloks. Great take-along fuel for long runs. I dig the strawberry flavor - they're like candy.
- Gleukos sports drink. Locally-made and free of high fructose corn syrup.
- chocolate almond milk. After a run this hits the spot with sodium, potassium, and protein. Lots of runners swear by chocolate milk as a recovery drink. Almond milk is similar in content. It has less fat and less protein, but more potassium! Its sodium content (150mg per serving) is nearly the same as chocolate cow milk.
- coconut water. This is new to me, but I really like it. It's great as a recovery drink, but I've also tried bringing it along on a 13 mile run and felt it provided me with plenty of energy!
- bananas. This is usually what I eat before running.
- whole wheat bagels. Another pre-workout snack!

So, if you're considering a vegan (or even vegetarian) diet and think it will cramp your athletic style, know that it can definitely be done!

Here are some vegan ultramarathoners who are a source of motivation:
Brendan Brazier, 2 time Canadian 50km Ultra Marathon Champion
Scott Jurek, winner of 7 consecutive Western States 100 Mile Endurance Runs

Why? [07 Oct 2008|02:18pm]

alanna_liadon
Corn mazes aren't really mazes anymore. Many of them seem to focus on the coolness of what picture they can make so it looks neat from the air, not on getting participants lost until it gets dark. What's up with that? I want to have to bring a flashlight.
