Hi. Go Play SE Portland 9 is Saturday the 23rd. I'd like to return to the old system where we have everyone sign up to play something before the actual night.
So far the games we have on schedule are:
Bliss Stage (Jake): Joel, Annie, Joel's brother., Skull This game is full
Dogs in the Vineyard (waiting to be confirmed, Nick): no players yet
Does anyone else want to volunteer to run a game or suggest a game that could be run?
I'm going to ask that if you plan to come, please sign up for a game before hand. Try to avoid just showing up without signing up for a game first, please.
Likewise, if you volunteer to run a game and no one signs up for it, don't show up expecting to run it. Instead, why not sign up to play a different game?
I want Go Play SE Portland to be the kind of event where everyone shows up already signed to play something. recently people have just been showing up without signing up to play, and this creates a lot of confusion, and often means there's not enough space for everyone.
I open the doors at 4pm. Contact me off list for directions (jake@atarashigames.com). We usually do a shared dinner around 5pm, and start gaming around 6pm. Feel free to bring food and drinks to share.
Jake
Go Play SE Portland 9 will happen Sunday, December 16th. You can find more info here:

Hey, everyone! I notice that the date for the next Go Play is fast approaching, and i'm not seeing a lot of feedback on games and stuff. So consider this a kick in the rear. I'm running Shadow of Yesterday, and so far have only one player signed up. Anyone else running any games? Let's get the signups going!
Travis and others have put a lot of work into the new Go Play PDX site, so let's all post our gaming plans there:

I already have a post up about my TSoY game.
Peace,

Hi! I'm currently involved with (one could say "running") a campaign every other Saturday afternoon, and due to a major player having to drop out we are seeking a replacement to round the group out again. The game system is a new one that is currently being playtested by this campaign, and there is a heavy focus on system criticism within each session. The system is primarily one of collaborative narration role-playing, with a variable amount of player empowerment based on a karma-like system of circular returns. The setting is home-brew, and most of the details can be found here.
We're primarily looking for someone who likes to take the spotlight and run with it, someone who likes to talk, likes to game, and plays well with others. Currently there are four of us, all from different gaming backgrounds and preferences, in our mid-20s to early 30s, and so far the game has been quite fantastic. If you're interested, let me know. Thanks!
- Nathanael
Nov 10th may be the only sat that works for me next month. Shall we go for it?
Hello all,
I'm an indie gamer from Northern California. I made some last minutes plans to be in Portland this weekend but I don't have a place to sleep. I'm looking for cool people with a spare couch or soft spot on the floor who would let a fellow gamer crash for a night.
I'll be showing up Saturday evening (Anytime after 6. Really, it's what works best for you.) and leaving Sunday morning. I'll cook dinner or breakfast and can even run a game in trade for a place to sleep.
If you have have a place, let me know! Comment here or email me at thisisvictor at gmail dot com.
Again, sorry for the off topic nature of this post.

Hi, everyone. I'm already pretty certain I want to run a Shadow of Yesterday game for the next Go Play PDX gathering. So I thought I'd give everyone a jump on things by soliciting players and giving them a little info. Actually a LOT of info: about the entire Shadow of Yesterday text has been entered into the TSoY Wiki.
So! In this thread let me know if you're interested in playing (I can take up to 5, 4 is probably more comfortable; I know a couple of folks have already expressed interest verbally, but go ahead and make it official here). Then check out the Wiki, particularly the Setting information, the "World of Near" and subsequent chapters. You don't have to read in any depth, just skim and poke around and tell me what grabs you about the setting. Particularly, what cultures and locales look fun or cool or interesting? This'll give me a good idea of where to set our game, and do the appropriate prep to hit the ground running with awesome Situation. OK? Then let's go!
Peace,
-Joel
Hey guys, I have a request that I was hoping you all would be able to help me with. :}
For the last few weeks, a couple of us have been working on what we would like to see end up being a combination of social networking and data storage, specifically aimed towards Roleplayers and Roleplaying Campaigns. Since this community holds the lion's share of the roleplayers I currently interact with, where better to ask people for feedback?
The site is here: http://awropla.com/
The user creation works something like this: Go to Create New Account and fill out as much or as little as you'd like. When the info is submitted, it's put up for approval by a mod (me, probably) and you'll be sent a password in your e-mail. Once you're approved you have access to the forums, where it'd be nice to introduce yourself so we know we're dealing with a human-being-beta-tester. Then you'll be flagged an Approved Contributor and will be able to have free rein... to make characters and campaigns and groups, at least. ;>
Right now we're looking at functionality, especially when creating new groups (would someone like to create one for GoPlay SEPDX? One for Gamestorm?) and linking together campaigns and character sheets. The look of the site will be changing shortly with coding and some artwork (we hope!) from other local gamers. However, this isn't -just- supposed to be a local site; eventually it'd be nice to have players from all over the world with all types of characters, groups and game styles.
Anyway, I just wanted to open it up and welcome anyone who might want to come on and play around. Any feedback you can possibly give will be beneficial in the long run. I appreciate your help!
Hey, I wrote up the GPSEPDX 7 Beast Hunters game over at the Story Games forum. Everyone's invited to take a look, and especially my fellow Hunters should check it out.
Peace,
-Joel
Hi. It looks very likely to me that our 2 evening games (beast Hunters and Yeld) will fill up. Each has 1-2 slots left at the moment. Is anyone interested in facilitating a third evening game? Or possibly carrying an afternoon game (like Dust Devils) over to the evening (for a long game)?
Let us know.
Go Play SE Portland 7 will be Sat, Oct 6th. The tentative plan is to run games both early in the after noon and later in the evening at the normal time. So we'll have a 1 to 5pm slot and a 6-10pm slot. If you don't think this schedule is workable please say so. We'll figure something out.
Proposed games so far include:
Beast Hunters
Dust Devils
Project C.H.A.I.R. or Panty Explosion or Shock
Yeld
Here's the slot schedule. If you are facilitating please let us know when you will start your game.
1st Slot (1-5pm):
Project CHAIR or Panty Explosion or Shock) facilitated by Jake Players: Jake, Nick, David
Dust Devils facilitated by Matthew Players: Kim, Matt
2nd Slot (6-10pm):
Beast Hunters facilitated by Christian Players: David, Tim, Joel (and Annie?)
Yeld facilitated by Travis Players: Jake, April, Gabe, Nick
If you have a game you are interested in facilitating please let us know. If you are interested in playing either of these game s plese let us know.
Dinner at 5pm. Email me off list for directions.
Jake@atarashigames.com
Hi.
New Proposal: 1 night, 2 game slots! Slot 1 starts at maybe 2pm and ends at 6pm. Slot 2 starts at 7 and ends at 11. Something like that. Thoughts? Will this work? What slots would be better? Maybe 5-9 and 10-2am for the late night people? Or noon-4 and 5-9 for the early people?
Games:
More slots means more games, right? So lets start proposing games!
Hi. assuming I haven't scared everyone away, lets talk about Go Play SE Portland 7. I'm thinking either Sept 22nd or October 6th. My house is busy with the Stumptown Comics Fest on the weekend of the 29th, otherwise I would suggest that date. However, if someone wants to organize some other gaming in between, I think that would be pretty awesome.
Lets hear game suggestion. I'm willing to facilitate again if needed, but I think I'd rather play in someone elses game.
If anyone needs a game, I have a bunch of stuff laying around post-Gencon. Grey Ranks, Artesia, Intergalactic Cooking Challenge, Hollow Earth Expedition, Covert Generation, Juiced Rider, Passages, Bliss Stage and the Princess Game. If you want to borrow something let me know.
Hi. It's been 9 months since Colin, Travis Matt and I met up in a bar and decided it would be cool if Portland had an organized community of indie/small press/alternative/story games. It's been 8 months since Matt, Travis, April, Joel, Christian and Colin joined Matt S, Kim Charles and myself in the house on Foster for the first Go Play SE Portland. In the last 8 months we've had 6 GO PLAY game nights, we've made a lot of new friends and we've tried a lot of new games. Some of us have travel to other towns to play with other like-minded gamers. Some of those gamers have made the trip to Portland to play with us.
It's been a good year.
But we can do better.
1. Lets get more people at the Go Play SE Portland game nights. I've noticed that attendance fluctuates wildly, and that some of our friends from earlier this year haven't joined us recently. What can we do to make these game nights more open and accessible to everyone? Is Saturday not a good day? Would more people attend if the event was held on another day? Is the location an issue? Is SE Portland too hard to get to? Is the house an unappealing setting? Do people feel intimidated or uncomfortable about coming to someones house instead of a neural location like a game store or restaurant?
We all have friends who game, but for some reason most of us aren't inviting our friends to Go Play SE Portland game nights. Why is that? I know for at least a few of us, the whole point of this community was to make friends we could play these games with, but I find it hard to imagine that some of our other role playing friends wouldn't be interested in some of the really excellent gaming we've been doing. I plan to extend the invitation to more of my gaming and non-gaming friends. I hope you will all consider doing the same.
2. Lets get more games going. The whole point of this community was to play as much as possible, but it looks like outside the SE Portland game nights there isn't a lot of indie gaming happening. Earlier this year I played in an excellent Little fears game and made some great friends. That was organized through this community. If you are interested in playing a game, please post and let other people know. I bet someone else is interested as well. If you have space at your home and want to host some players for an evening, I'm sure you'll find several of us are happy to play with you.
3. How can we get more Portland gamers involved with our group and playing Indie games? I don't feel the need to be a missionary on behalf of indie games, but I'd love to introduce more Portlanders to these games and expand the number of people I can enjoy games with. I'm interested in trying game days at local game stores, book stores and cafes. or something like that. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
4. Gamestorm 10 is coming in March of 2008. We had a good time at Gamestorm last year, but this year we'd like to see the indie games part of Gamestorm expand into something similar to the GO PLAY NW event that some of us attended in Seattle. I'm on the Gamestorm board this year, and to help plan this event Travis, Christian, Chris W, Matt G, Matt S and Chris G have joined me to form an "Indie Gamestorm" planning committee. We want to provide more scheduled indie gaming, more panels and events, more indie publishers and more games. If you are interested in participating in or helping organize and promote Indie Gamestorm please let us know.
These are my initial ideas for expanding and improving our community. I'd like to turn this into a dialog. Let me know what you think.
Jake
I'm very interested in continuing our Shock: game. I'm free on Sat and Sundays for the next two weeks. What about everyone else?
Jake
Go Play SE Portland 6 is over. Thanks for every one who attended. We played Covert Generation and Shock, and everyone seemed to have a great time!
I'd like to see Go Play SE 7 happen in September. I think the 22nd woul dbe the best date, but I'm open to suggestions.
Jake
Hi. Nick has stepped up to facilitate Covert Generation. This is a game I've really, really been wanting to play, so I'm a little jealous. here's the blurb:
"Covert Generation is a roleplaying game of young secret agents set to take on, take down, and shut down the machinations of The X, those once angst-filled slackers who soon joined the corporate machines and sold out their world and their values along the way."
find out more here: http://www.indiepressrevolution.com/xcar
So, Shock is full, but both Classroom Deathmatch and Covert Generation have room. If you plan on coming this Sat please plan to play one of these games! It wouldn't hurt to sign up in advance either!
Classroom Deathmatch starts at 4pm. Covert Generation and Shock start after 5pm. Group dinner at 7pm. Email me off list if you need directions to the secret location.
I think this will be the best Go Play SE Portland yet. Don't miss it!
Jake
jake@atarashigames.com
Just less then a week till Go Play SE Portland #6! We have enough players for both Classroom Deathmatch and Shock. If you plan on attending PLEASE sign up for one of these games in advance! Otherwise there may not be room for you! If you're interested in facilitating another game, please let us know. I know at least 4 people who are attending tat are not yet signed up for a game, so we're going to have extra players! If someone wants to run, Dogs, 1001 Nights or anything else, I'm sure you'll have interested players. I'm happy to loan games to anyone who needs them.
Bring a friend! Our game nights are open to everyone, so don't be afraid to bring a pal, girlfriend, husband or whatever. Just make sure they're signed up for a game!
Classroom Deathmatch: Mark says he wants to start at or around 4pm
Shock: I'd like to start Shock at 5pm, but I'm willing to be flexible. If you are playing Shock and are interested in looking over the rules before the 25th (please do!), I'll happily send you the PDF. Let me know.
Food: I'd like to propose a mid game food break, maybe around 7 pm?
Hi. Shock and Classroom Deathmatch both have enough players (although Shock can take one more and I think Mark wants 2 more for Classroom Deathmatch). I know there are some other people who are planning on coming. Is anybody interested in facilitating a third game?
So I'll be facilitating Shock on Sat, August 25th. If you are interested in playing please sign up here. I think we can accomodate 5 (including myself), but I'll double check that. I know that's a fairly small group, but I don't want to crowd the game.
Edit: the game is closed. However, it looks like there are more people that are interested in playing. If this is the case, it may be possible to split into 2 groups of 4. Are there enough interested people?

So... I'd like to choose a Shock before we meet. I'll play anything, and I'm happy to hear other people's suggestions. What do you guys think?
Mark has offered to facilitate Classroom Deathmatch for us. Now I wish I hadn't offered to facilitate anything, because I love playing CDM! If you're interested in playing, sign up here!
Players:

Okay, here's what I'm thinking. We'll hold GPSEPDX#6 on Sat August 25th. For anyone who is interested, we will als make the house available for games the following day (Sunday the 26th). So this will be a two day event.
This will be a moot paoint if none of the Sunday people can make it. If that's the case, I'd rather just confine it to Sat. But this is one of the rare times when my house is free on Sunday, and I'd like to take advantage of that and invite all our frineds who just can't make it on Sat to join us on Sunday instead. If you would like to play on Sunday please make sure to let me know. I'll be happy to play in or facilitate gaes for both days.
Games on the menu:
Shock, The Princess Game, Alien Summit (facilitated by Jake)
Classroom Deathmatch (facilitated by Mark)
If you are interested in facilitating a game please let us know. make a sign up post to the Livejournal so that any interested players can sign up. If you are interested in playing a game please sign up before the 25th. We avoid a lot of confusion when people sign up before hand.
If none of the games offered interest you, please feel free to suggest agame or offer to facilitate one yourself.
Dinner: We've had fun with shared dinner the last few times. I'd like to probpose that we continue that tradition. But I think that we migh bebefit either from an earlier dinner or a later one. maybe we could break half way through the evening for dinner?
Jake
The Stumptown Comics Fest is coming in late Portland. Stumptown is Portland's awesome yearly comic fest that showcases small press, indie and mainstream comics and comic creators from accross the world (or the country at least). This year Stumptown is a a two day event held at the Double Tree Hotel down by Lloyd Center. You can see the guest list at the Stumptown site. In addition to a dealers hall full of really cool comics and neat people there will also be some fun programming. This year I'm helping out with the childrens programming by setting up stop-motion animation and zoatrope worstations, as well as a booth where attendees can create their own mini-comics. Should be fun!
The Stumptown Comics Fest is Sept 29-30th. Past years have been a lot of fun, and I think this year will be the best so far!
New idea. It looks like the 18th / 19th is bad for a number of people. To cap tat, I may well be out of town!
How about the 25th/26th?
Hi. I'd like to propose August 19th as the date for the next Go Play SE Portland. This is a Sunday. If anyone objects feel free to propose another date. But I'd like to try a Sunday because I know there are at least a few people that have said they just can't come on Sat.
Games: I will be willing to facilitate Shock, Alien Summit, The Princess Game or the Swedish Jeepform game Doubt.
Jake
Hi, everyone! I wanted to let you all know, I wrote up anAP report in the Forge on the Dogs game we played at Go Play July. You can find it here: http://www.indie-rpgs.com/forum/index.p
Peace,
-Joel
Since it's been stated that GoPlay SE isn't a good forum for playtesting, is there any interest in establishing a floating pool of players specifically for the purposes of playing new games in development? Or is the concept of a semi-formal group/gathering for design and testing only redundant and unnecessary?
It seems that you guys in this community that are game designers already have a core group that you kick ideas around in. Would outside players be helpful?
This post isn't entirely altruistic, since I'll need to gather playtesters myself in the near-ish future. Knowing there's a group of people specifically interested in helping with such things would make the enthusiasm easier to drum up for the actual playing! part of the playtesting. :}
Does anyone have a copy of The Mountain Witch?
One that I could potentially borrow, or perhaps that someone would be willing to run in the future? :}
OK, for those who don't know. . .my lovely lady Annie and I are getting married soon, and last Saturday at PDX Go Play we invited everyone! Our only guest criteria is "if you know us well enough to want to attend." So if you do, then great! The more the merrier!

Hi. I'd like to say thanks to everybody who made it out this weekend for Go Play 5. For those of you who couldn't make it, We all hope to see you next time!
I think we're starting to run into some problems, so let's talk about them and see if we can find some solutions.
Problem: People getting stuck in games they don't really want to play. This has happened a few times now, and i think it kind of defeats the purpose of what we're doing here. There are a few ways we can avoid this problem I think. First, lets be more proactive about signing up in advance for games we want to play. This way we won't end up with people showing up for a game that's already full. This also let's facilitators know if anybody is interested in playing their game. If a game has no sign-ups a few days before hand a facilitator can offer another game or sign up to play something themselves. Remember, if no one signs up for your game it probably means no on wants to play it.
If you don't see a game that interests you, either offer to facilitate one your self or suggest a game that you would like to see facilitated. I'd b happy to fill a request if I can. I'm sure other people would as well. Don't be afraid to add a game you would like to facilitate to the list just because there are already a few choices on there. The more choices the better!
Problem: Canceled games. There's nothing wrong with canceling your game, but if you are going to do so please let us know as soon as possible, preferably by posting here or on the Yahoo group. This will allow players who were considering your game to make other plans.
Problem: Play tests. I don't think Go Play SE Portland is a good place for play testing. I've said so before. I think it's a little unfair to subject players who are expecting a good time to an unfinished game experience. This last time we had 2 play test games scheduled. Neither received any sign ups, but one of them ended up played anyway due to lack of options. Once it was obvious that no one was interested in play testing my game (Ghost Bike Club) I should have offered to run another game. This was a failing on my part. While we ended up having a good time testing Shangri-la in Transit, I know this was not any of the players first choice.
I think we should limit play testing. If any of us have a game we would like to test, I think we should either do it outside the Go Play SE Portland events, or only schedule it if we have enough players signed up to play. This would mean that if no one signs up for a play test then it does not get run. I think we can very easily end up in a situation where people feel obligated to play test, or where they feel like this is the only option they have. Let's avoid this as much as possible.
Problem: Sea Dracula. Well, not just Sea Dracula. Starting late is the real problem. This is nobodies fault, really. It just happens. I'd like to develop a more consistent starting time. I'm thinking either 4 or 5pm. Alternativley, we could have the facilitators declare when their games will start. This is what we did the first few times, and it worked well. I enjoy talking to all (well, most) of you, but these last few times we've suffered from late starts that have hurt our games. To help solve this, let's all try to show up whenever our game is starting (or way before if you want). We can work this all out ahead of time so each game can start at a time that is convienent for it's players.
Let also try to keep the stuff that keeps us from playing to a minimum. This last weekend Sea Dracula cut an hour into our gaming, and this was after we got a late start anyway. I'm really sorry about that, and it was unfair for everyone who wasn't playing. Let's try to make sure all pre-game activities happen before 5pm.
Good Thing: Shared Dinner. The shared dinner continues to be a good thing. Thanks everyone! I know not everyone can make it by 5pm, and one of the reasons we've been starting a little later is because we've been waiting for friends so we can eat together. i don't think this is a bad thing at all, but I think with some coordination we could do better. I think it would be pretty easy for those of us who arrive earlier to start playing early and break for dinner. Those arriving late also don't need to worry about rushing out the door at 10pm (unless of course you have to). You are more then welcome to stay and play later if you want.
Good Thing: New players. We had both Patrick and Jackson join us this weekend for the first time. Thanks for coming guys!
Next time: I hope you'll all join me next month for Go Play SE Portland #6!
Jake
.
OK, sign up here for Dogs in the Vineyard for the 14th. This is a continuation of last month's session, so is primarily directed at the four folks who played then. If others want to join, they are welcome, but ONLY if one or more of the original group[ cancels.
We'll be starting at about 5:00.
1. Annie
2. Charles
3. Julie
4. Glen
Any takers?
Peace,
-Joel
EDIT: Looks like we're full up. Glad the interest is still there, guys! I can't wait!
Nick and I plan to run Sea Dracula either before everything gets started or after everything finishes. Sea Dracula is a short RPG that involves signing, dancing and coloring. We can facilitate up to 5 players.
You can download the full playtest PDF here.
This is a playtest for my new short form game about Portlanders who travel into the Ghost World to put the spirits of cyclist killed in Portland's traffic to rest. This game combines super easy character creation with a simple conflict resolution system and narration mechanics. Should be super easy to pick up and play.
I posted some general information about the game on my blog. I can facilitate 2-5 players, including myself.
This game will likely start slightly later, between 5-6pm.
info about the game here.
this would be the second session. it doesn't really matter if you were there at the first one, but it's a sorta-continuation of that other one, using some plot stuff I came up with.
seriously, if you want to play and are worried you'll be missing something cuz you weren't there last session, don't worry, it's just not that kind of game.
slots available (not counting myself): 4. maybe 5.
signed up:
-
katlyn who was there last time.
-
xauenmurph
- ???
- ???
If you plan on attending Go Play 5 next Sat please take a moment to let us know which game you plan to play. You can say so here or post to the LJ here:
http://community.livejournal.com/pdxind
Why not wait till you get here and then decide? That is a giant pain in the ass. Right now we have 6 games up for consideration. We only have room for 3. That means 6 people are currently preparing games, but only three of them are going to be able to run them. By signing up ahead of time we can determine which games will get run and which will not. Then the people who won't be running games will have the option to sign up and play something else.
Beyond that, signing up ahead of time makes the whole thing run much, much smoother. If we know who is laying what then we won't end up siting around for two hours (like some of us did last time) waiting to see who would show up and what would get played. It just makes it much much easier for everyone.
Need more info about a game to make your choice? no problem!

I beg you, if you haven't signed up to play or facilitate a game for Go Play SE Portland #5, please do so! Please! Please! Please!
If nothing on the list interests you then please feel free to step forward and facilitate something yourself. Please!

Willem has taken over organizing Go Play Portland 11. Here's his post from the Go Play PDX forum detailing the event:
What: 11 hours of story gaming madness. Bring your own story games to host, or come to play someone else's game.
When: Saturday, June 28th 2008, 12pm - 11pm.
Where: the Scout Pit, 5040 SE Milwaukie Portland OR (around back, lower parking lot entrance).
Help!: We need folding card tables and other kinds of tables. We have loads of chairs, but only one table.
Cost: I've brought the price down to $5/person at the door, with the implication that enough of us will show up (hopefully 30 peeps or more?) that the space will still cover its costs. Normally the Pit charges an hourly rate of $25, just so you know the scale in mind. Knowing this, please come and bring all the story gamers you can lay your hands on so that we can make the Pit hosts happy and keep this event going monthly!
In other words: come immerse yourself in stories with us. Duty and honor compels you.
Food and logistics: We have a kitchen for food prep, including a fridge, propane stove, espresso coffee machine, normal coffee maker, lots of cups, plates, silverware etc. Bring appropriate comestibles.
Please RSVP to me, Willem, as soon as possible, so I don't chew my fingernails off. mythic dot cartographer at gmail dot com.
