Bits and Pieces [07 Oct 2008|10:29pm]

[ mood | okay ]

- The lady I had spoken with at Comcast had told me that my cable and internet were set to be turned off on the 5th, yet here I am.  I'm not going to complain, but they will turn it off eventually.  Oh well, at least I got to watch the debate tonight.

- I downloaded and have been using Google's new browser, Chrome, for a couple weeks now.  There are alot of things I like about it, but for some reason it does not handle embedded videos very well.  Every time I try to watch an embedded video on my LJ friend's list it freezes up.  What's up with that?

- I've been sneaking over to [info]mccain_palin08 to see what their reaction to the debates were.  I never cease to be amazed at how people can see and hear the same things and walk away with totally different opinions.  I mean, were these people watching the same thing I was??  Here are a few comments:

"It made me think of a 1st year political science major debating his professor. Obama just looks out of place and out of his league at these things."

"ABSOLUTELY think McCain won. He spent most of the debate on the offensive, only rarely going on defense. The only time he asked to rebut was when Obama was given that opportunity."

"If it helps, my hubby has a degree in comm studies from Iowa (best program in the nation woot!) with emphasis was on political rhetoric, and he thinks McCain came away the winner. He's done extensive study on the topic so I trust his judgment. If McCain had really tanked, he'd have said so."

Really??  REALLY??  Have these people just drank so much kool-aid that they can't see any other reality?  I mean, I know I am an Obama supporter and I probably favor him, but I feel like I could at least be somewhat unbiased and would acknowledge if McCain was doing well.  I just don't get it.

- I JUST can't wait to start working at OHSU and get a consistent paycheck coming in again.  I'm hoping I get a placement ASAP after the training.  I am so sick of being so broke.  I haven't been out on a Friday or Saturday (apart from Sister events) in ages.  And I am sick of not being able to go see a movie.  And of eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and banquet frozen meals (but thank god they are only $1 each at Fred Meyer!).

- I finally finished A Meeting at Corvallis by S. M Stirling.  It was book #3 in the series started by Dies The Fire.  It's a post-apocalyptic saga set right here in Oregon.  All technology one day ceases to work, including gunpowder, and everything goes to shit.  The survivors are a history professor and SCA geek who takes over Portland, an ex-military guy who sets up around McMinnville, and a Wiccan from Eugene.  The first few books follow the first ten years after the Change and the societies that build up around these three individuals.  The books are great great fun and very interesting.  My only complaint is that Stirling sometimes writes TOO much detail.  Fight scences and descriptions of clothing sometimes go on far too long.  There are moments the details get tedious.  But overall I highly reccomend the books.  I have now started Wizard's First Rule, by Terry Goodkind, mostly because there is a syndicated TV series(remember those?) coming out in November based on the books.  So far I am not super impressed.  The writing just isn't that great.  I'll give it about 200 pages, though, to see if I'll stick with it.

Why Dianna Is The Best [07 Oct 2008|09:29pm]

archmage
So, a while back, someone in the [info]city_of_heroes community made a post about "crafty" CoH-related things. Dianna was sitting on the couch, doing some crochet, and I had an idea: a scarf that was blue on one end, sporting the "Hero" logo, and red on the other, with an Arachnos logo (the main villain group in the game). When I told her about it, she just grinned (and probably cringed a little internally), and started thinking about how to pull it off. Today, she handed me the finished product...

McCain-Obama debate comment [07 Oct 2008|07:33pm]

madeofmeat
I don't have much of substance to say. Obama seemed to pull a Biden and give more informed and in-depth and less folksy answers than his opponent. He also seemed to be talking faster than he should have, stumbling and faltering at a running pace in some places. I think McCain, as everyone predicted, is better suited to the town hall format (though the can't-raise-his-arms thing stands out more). Beyond that, I didn't hear much that was new.

But man, they both totally dodged the last question, "What don't you know, and how do you plan to learn it?" It's a great question. Obama's dodge was much less artful than McCain's.

Edit: Oh, and McCain CLEARLY AND UNFORGIVABLY ignored the problem of nuclear waste storage. He just completely brushed it aside.

Both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain continue to talk about how much OIL the Americans import from the Middle East.

AS THIS CHART CLEARLY SHOWS...from the US DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY, America imports more oil from The Americas than it does from the Middle East.

Just SAYING.

I harvested artichokes from my garden for dinner tonight. Yum! After I cooked them, I rinsed them in cold water, running the tap straight into the center of the 'choke, watching the water spread the leaves apart.

"Wow," I thought to myself, "that looks just like a blossoming flower."

And then I kicked myself in the head for being a moron.

Last night while watching Heroes (which has already improved significantly since last season, thankfully), was I the only person who noticed that Peter and Nathan's mother looks incredibly how Palin should in 30-some years.

Perhaps it was just her hair - but she was slightly more frightening last night than last season.

I've got so much to do, it's all colliding in on itself! Spray painting furniture right now, I need to cut all my poster board frames to size to hang at The Watershed tomorrow, need to draw up one last thing for esoZone, people are coming from New York, Alaska, and Canada to stay with me on Thursday, have to finish memorizing the last paragraph for my performance on Saturday(yes folks, Ian will be making an ass of himself attempting to act on stage!), need to respond to a dozen emails... *sigh*

But right now I need food, and to remember to be social, so I'm going to get some Mexican with Jesse. Oh shit, and the debate is tonight. Shit. Oh well, I expect it won't be much more than:

Obama: "What we need is more economic regulation... what do you think about our economy, John?"
McCain: "... you're stupid! And you like terrorists! You make my VP wet when you vote for me, America! C'MON!"

Both Boing Boing(I had no idea Richard Metzger blogged on boingboing) and the Oregonian have covered esoZone.

Job Stuff [07 Oct 2008|05:25pm]

lazaruspdx
[ mood | anxious ]

The temp assingment at the really boring data entry job is over.  Ugh.

The ironic thing is that the temp agency originally told me that they wanted me to commit to the job for 90 days and I was feeling slightly guilty that I would be leaving as soon as I start the new OHSU position.  As soon as I got there I realized that the job wouldn't be that long.  We were working on a specific project and when that was done, then what?  That was fine with me, but I was hoping the data entry job would drag out a little more so that I could keep working it until the OHSU job kicks in.

(I just realized that not everyone on my LJ friends list is local.  OHSU = Oregon Health and Science University.  Big, big teaching hospital on the hill overlooking Portland)

I didn't get the OHSU position that starts this Friday.  The rep at the temp agency said that they had to wait until I was done with training.  She said she tried to sell me for the position, but that the department at OHSU didn't want to to wait.  Right now they are at a standstill because they are waiting for those of us in this training class to finish the training on Thursday so that they can start placing us.

The way it works is that the temp agency enrolls us in the 3 day training and then after that they try and place us at a variety of OHSU jobs.  There is no guarantee that I will get placed after the training, but the temp agency has to pay for the training and has to pay us while we attend the training, so I don't think they would just leave us hanging and not use us after they put a little bit of an investment in us.  The training is not put on by the temp agency nor is it attended only by temps.  It's a regular OHSU training that the temp agency enrolls us in, so I am pretty sure the temp agency is paying for it with the assumption that they'll make their money back once we're placed in positions.

It's a great way to get a foot in the door at OHSU.  Many of the assignments are temp to perm.  It's decent pay.  AND it stays in a field I found out (at ODS) that I enjoy.

The down side is that I was hoping to make the data entry job last right up until I got a placement at OHSU, that way there would be no break in pay.  So instead of getting paid for 44 hours this week, I'm only going to have 20.  I'm pretty sure I'll get placed at an OHSU position, but the question is WHEN?  Let's hope it is Monday or early next week.

Keep the prayers and positive energy comin'!
