A few days ago Warren Ellis sent a mail out very humbly requesting that maybe the bloggy folks of the world could post something about his absolutely free webcomic Freakangels, which if you haven't seen it, is beyond wonderful. Besides the typically fabulous writing of Mr. Ellis himself, Paul Duffield has outdone himself with the artwork and basically it is mindblowing that this is provided at no charge to anybody, considering the kind of bank those guys would be making otherwise, doing pretty much anything at all. This gorgeous item is free, like the best things in the world.

There's a new installment every Friday and as of this morning there are 16 episodes.

blackrose books + freestore has a metric tushyload of free clothes. shirts, pants, shoes, skirts, coats, sweaters, shoes, and some non-clothes stuffs: books, dishes, scrap fabric, and moreeeeee. oh, and right now we have SOOOOOO MUCH clothes traditionally worn by women. SOOO MUCH.

heyyyy. monday food not bombs is gonna kick off next week! cinco de mayo!

if ya don't already know, food not bombs is a kinda awkward name for a really cool thing: a world wide decentralized movement to feed people using food that would otherwise be thrown away. we get our food from donations and dumpsters and turn it into cool culinary creations. fruit salad and tofu scramble and stuff.

we're non-hierarchal and everyone's welcome to help out! if you bring food, bring an ingredients list, please. non-vegan foods are okay.

we're serving at 5:30 at the peninsula park rose garden, located at n. albina and ainsworth!

I am an epileptic and I am about to move to Portland. If any of you could give me advice on where to go to apply for assistance for my medication, it would be of tremendous help. I usually get them through, "BRIDGES TO ACCESS"; so if any of you are on that and could post a reply I would appriciate it.

Toy Art Show Looking for Submssions and Performers

This is a FREE event at the Watershed June 6th.
Toys make everyone happy, they rekindle the experiences of our childhood.
What is your artwork that is related to toys?
Toy Art can be anything toy themed. Bicycles, puppets, sculpture, pinatas, dolls, games, fashion, robots, and more encouraged.
This show is also in search of toy related talent to preform.( Hula hoopers, fire, jugglers, klowns, puppets...)

91-year-old blind, African American author comes to Central Library

My name is Eva Fields and I'm sending this to tell you that my grandma Eva Rutland www.evarutland.com will be signing books in Portland. Mrs. Rutland wrote a memoir entitled "When We Were Colored, a Mother's Story" that tells her story of being a young black mother raising four children in California during the early days of integration of the 1950s and 1960s. Upbeat and funny, she states in her introduction "I was born in the
olden days, when pot was a cooking utensil, webs were for spiders and civil rights were for white folks." She tells stories all mothers can relate to. Stories like taking her four children all under the age of eight to the 5-and-10 (the five and dime) three days before Christmas and 5-year-old Ginger having a break down in the store because she spent all her money and forgot to buy her daddy a present. She peppers her stories with reminders of the special problems that blacks faced. She ends the Christmas story with a lament about having to walk past Woolworths during the Civil Rights era when the store was being picketed for because they would not serve blacks at their lunch counters in the South. She states "but pass it up I did. This was bigger than my pockets. These young people were bigger than me---and I couldn't let them down."

Eva Rutland is now 91-years-old and blind but she continues to write. She has published over 20 novels and is currently working on her sequel to "When We Were Colored," tentatively entitled "Grandma Troubles." She will be signing books and talking about her life on:

heyyyy! the Blackrose Collective Freecycle has TONS of free clothes. and we want you to take them. because we love you.

shirts, pants, coats, sweaters, shoes, kids/babies, and more! we have a fair amount of non-clothes stuff, too: books, kids books, binders, notebooks, old magazines, and more!

we're located at 4038 N. Mississippi, between Shaver and Mason. we're all volunteers, and our hours are kinda irregular, but we're generally open 12:00 - 6:00. we're definitely open tonight til 6:00, and tomorrow from 12:00 - 4:45.

heyyyyyy all. just joined the community, and thought i'd share a secret: Food Not Bombs is awesome and you should so totally come.

FNB is a decentralized, non-hierarchal effort to feed people with food that would otherwise be thrown away. for more history on FNB, check out foodnotbombs.net.

so, we serve four times a week in portland:

tuesdays @ colonel summers park (SE 17th and taylor)
wednesdays @ dawson park (N. vancouver and stanton, near emanuel hospital)
fridays @ colonel summers park (SE 17th and taylor)
saturdays under the west end of the burnside bridge

and we could always use some more organizers! <3

i have a bale of hay that's been sitting in my (dry) basement since summer. can you make use of it?

*** please note that it's hay, not straw. you do not want to use it as a top mulch layer, or it will grow! it should be fine if you're sheet mulching and want to use it as an lower layer, though.***

you will have to haul it out of my basement (no stairs, just a slight slope and a squishy yard)) in the mississippi area.

i'd like to get rid of it this weekend!

i have FOUR vintage drinking glasses from The Great Muppet Caper that have been for sale at Daylight Savings, a rad vintage shop behind Burnside Proper Salon.

i'm moving all my merchandise out, and i'd rather see these glasses go to a fan than have them break.

the first person who comes to retrieve them before 10PM tonight, friday, gets them for free. please be a muppet fan!

free rescued cat

my neighbor has been evicted and she left her cat behind. he has gone without food or water for 3 days. i just went to winco and bought cat food, a litter box, litter, a scoop for poop, and a food dish.

i am extremely allergic to pets. does anyone have the loving capacity to love this cat and take him into their home

what they'd get:

a neutered adult male cat who i have known since he was a kitten. he is sweet and doesn't scratch furniture
a brand new litterbox
a brand new bag of litter
a brand new food dish
a brand new bag of cat food
and a brand new poop scoop

please respond to this somebody because i love this animal so much and i think it is heartless to just abandon him! i hope someone out there will give him the love he deserves.

I have heard of lots of places like this around here but I have never actually seen them... can someone point me in the right direction?

I am on wic and I have too much milk, cheese, and eggs. I will not get through them in time before the end of the month. ON the first I get a new set of vouchers for MORE food.

So I am giving this food to whomever wants it. Folks with kids get first dibs, but ask anyway cos maybe no one with kids wants it.

It is all fresh and ready for you to pick up.

.... is extremely wasteful. yesterday i got a sweater and two belts, plus a bunch of adding machine paper, and 3 rolls of scotch tape out of their dumpster! also if you need trash bags they have tons and tons of their store bags that they threw away cos they got a new logo.

just be discreet and clean up after yourself so that they don't lock the dumpster because this is a great resource for all.

i have unopened boxes of qvar (asthma maintainance inhaler) and of this antibiotic/steroid cream (itchy rashes) and i would much rather give them away than throw them away. they've been given to me as free samples by the doctor within the last two months. so they're not expired. so just let me know if you need those ok.

If so, you are eligible for FREE Naturopathic Primary Care every Tuesday night from 4-8 pm at the PCC Central Workforce Center. You schedule an appt and get a Dr. who you see once or twice a month. You pay like $5 for $60 worth of suppliments. You can't beat it!

Other community members can go too, but their ND visit would be $20, the good thing is that the supplements are still super cheap. And they do everything an MD can do, but they do a total mind, body physical and try to find the cause of any problems and then treat them with Natural Medicines.

It's a really great thing. I go there and I take my 3 year old. They are super good with kids!
