Hi!

I've been searching and searching online (and have learned many facts about Multnomah County, none of which help), so I'm hoping someone will have this link handy. Last summer I was on a website that compared rent for your neighborhood. I think I put in my address, and it showed similar units and their rent prices, so I could gloat over how cheap my rent was- which is what you get when it floods, and the wiring's not up to code.

I'm really hoping to find that website again :) But, like I said, I've been searching and searching and none of my word combos are bringing up hits.

Thank you for any help you can give :)

Am thinking about Portland...

Hello,

I am very strongly considering moving to Portland, I have spent the past several months in San Francisco, and prior to that several years in Austin. I find that I prefer progressive, open minded, artistic communities with 'personality' (Keep Austin Weird), I particularly enjoyed living in South Austin, SF is just far to expensive, and seems to have lost its soul since I lived here a decade ago. I am more prone to spending my time in coffee shops and book stores then bars or clubs, and I enjoy outdoor social events, like First Thursday in Austin. If anyone has any thoughts as to which neighborhoods are a good match or any other suggestions, or just want to give your thoughts about Portland, I would love to hear from people familiar with Austin who might have a good compare/contrast for me...

Also, anyone know of any apartments/rooms coming open around March, or recommendations/warnings about Apartment complexes/renters, etc.
Please let me know....

Thank You
j

Roommate Search

Want to share a house or apartment with a mellow 27-year-old female? I currently live in a studio apartment in inner-SE Portland, but I'd like to cut back on my expenses by sharing long-term housing. I like the area I'm in now, though I'd consider other central/close-in locations as long as I could walk or bike quickly to groceries, coffee, etc. I'm looking for 1 to 4 roommates to find a place together or a room in a pre-existing household. Ideally, I'd like to stay in the $350 per month range, but I'm willing to spend a little more for the right situation.

Here's a little about me and what I'm looking for:
- I'm educated, employed, and taking classes.
- I enjoy cooking, hiking, reading, Scrabble, running, listening to NPR, and photography.
- I'm vegan, but you don't have to be.
- I don't have a TV and would prefer a household that doesn't have one featured as its main attraction.
- I don't have pets. I'd like to adopt a cat in the near future, and I'd consider sharing a house with a friendly, well-trained dog.
- I'm a non-smoker and don't use drugs; I need roommates that can say the same.
- I'm not into loud parties or excessive drinking.
- You should be 25-35 years old, financially stable, clean, and friendly.
- We don't need to become best friends, but we should at least enjoy one another's company.

I'm being a little picky, but I'm not in a huge hurry to find housing. A good fit is more important to me right now. Let me know if you're interested!

(Yes, I already posted this on Craigslist.)

friend of mine searching for roommate asap

Hola:
a friend of mine is searching for a roommate to share an apartment near Mississippi. It's 1/2 of a duplex, and includes a big kitchen and living room, an excellent bathroom with good water pressure in the shower, and a fat bedroom (for you) with oodles of closet space. Downsides include wall to wall carpet (unless you're into that sort of thing), no pets, and limited yard availability. Utilities are low, and so is the rent: you would pay $375. Contact me with questions, or if you're interested!

renter's rights question

okay, i could really use a nudge in the right direction here.

problem: in one word - woodpecker(s)! i live in an older apartment complex on the third floor, and at least one woodpecker refuses to stop making the side of my apartment swiss cheese. i have talked to the manager a hundred times over, and have been told they are supposed to put new siding up - still hasn't happened. now, i understand it's a time-consuming process to get the bids and get home-office to approve it, etc.

in the meantime, i have seven 2X4s and three holes on the outside of my apartment, along with wire mesh and a 2X4 inside my son's closet - where one woodpecker managed to make it through the drywall. we have insulation EVERYWHERE outside, and my son's room and my closet are a good 5 degrees cooler than the rest of the apartment.

i've talked to the audobon society to find out ways of discouraging the woodpeckers from coming back until the new siding project happens, and have told not only the on-site manager and maintenance guy, but also the home-office liason for our property - to no avail. they hung one, yes ONE, streamer off of one of the 2X4s. needless to say, the woodpecker is back, and already has a new hole started. *grumbles*

we are paying 'market value' on this unit - do i have a right to request/demand a rent reduction based on this current-and-ongoing problem?

may be looking for roommie for April 1st

It is a wonderful 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 1100 sq.ft. apartment with hard wood floors on the ground floor. The room available is a wonderful bright orange (I love it) and the other room is bright yellow. The apartment has good energy and would love a positive person as a new roommate.

I am ideally looking for a roomie that speaks Arabic, because I really want to learn it, but as long as you're a student and a male it doesn't matter that much. I prefer 20 or over.... but if you are 25 I am willing to work with someone that wouldn't mind helping out with various things like misc. rides, help shopping, and some misc. other stuff. In that case the rent would be as low as 400 plus 88 for utilities (including Comcast Internet).

It is a wonderful 4 blocks from PSU campus and a block from the downtown Safeway. Most all buses run down both streets on either side of the building, and the street car stops only a block away.

Get in touch as soon as possible if this is something you are interested in. The place is furnished and so is your room. Bed, desk, dresser, shelves, two closets, and I can even provide linens and towels, etc.

contact me at roombypsu@comcast.net

And Introduce a bit about yourself.
THanks

Tight spot, making deposit?

Is it common for landlords or management companies to be a little flexible about when they get the deposit money? I am in a situation where I need to move yesterday (living with ex!) but my financies are such that, while I do have the 1st month's rent, I will probably not have deposit money until a few weeks after I move -- once I get deposit back for the current place. So I'm hoping that I will find some flexibility with landlords but I'm a little embarassed to ask them! What do you think?

Empty rooms needing to be filled...

I am renting a house near SE 82nd and SE Stark. I have three possible rooms to rent out. One is a real bedroom with hardwood floors, big windows and a closet. I also have two larger rooms in the basement that can be turned into bedrooms. There are no doors or closets but it can be remedied. The basement is finished and clean and there is a separate shower down there. Washer/dryer, high speed wireless internet, cable television.. I have three cats, and work as a professional dog groomer so PLEASE no animal haters. No smoking inside. No hard drugs at all. This is a corner lot so there's plenty of parking and no loud neighbors. Very easy walking distance to EVERYTHING! Safeway, walgreens, bipartisan cafe, mcdonalds, subway, restaurants, theatre, bars, tobacco shop, schools, churches and bus stops all within a block or two! Quick drive to Mt. Tabor park. I am not sure what to charge for rent yet because it depends on whether or not I can fill the basement rooms. Let me know if it sounds interesting... tistististis@gmail.com

Looking for an apartment

I'm a 20 (21 in mid feb) year old VA transplant looking for new place to live. I've been in downtown for the last 6 months in a studio and its time for something with a little space for the cats to run around. I have two. A yard would be great, but even a space bigger than a studio would be much better for them.

If you, or anyone knows of a place looking for a roommate close-in (SW, NW, SE, NE, i'm flexible), let me know. I don't smoke, am not loud, and I even have a job. I'd like to pay under 600 after utilities, and I have no problem signing a lease.

I'm moving out of my current place the end of February.
-Alex
aoyola@gmail.com

dog friendly apts

I have to find my own apartment and i am dreading the task of finding an affordable apt allowing a dog that weighs 50-55lbs without paying an absurd amount of pet deposits and fees.

My preferable rent would be around $500 - $580 for a one bedroom apartment. So far it seems my options are smaller considering i have a medium-sized dog. Who is extremely well-behaved, trained and completely house broken. it's all those bad dog owners that have made it so difficult for the rest of us!

my question is this - does anyone know of decent apartments around my price range that allow dogs 50lbs and up? preferable without crazy deposits and fees because i am on a tight budget. i would like to stay in portland and not too far out. currently i am in the woodstock area and it's not too bad. i don't mind the sw area over the hills (but not beaverton - too far and too boring), but being closer is preferable.

Thanks!

Renter-For-Life

Because I'm a nomad and move from town-to-town every 5 years or so, I am a renter-for-life. And I've had good experiences and bad experiences.

BAD EXPERIENCES:

Renting from "landlords instead of "management companies."
Well, to be honest, landlords AND people who work at management companies, are a breed of people I don't quite understand. But I have found that "landlords" will be loosey-goosey until they decide they don't like what you're doing with their properties and then they get all "to the letter." At least management companies keep everything in black and white and will leave you alone as long as you pay your rent on time.

Exception: renting from Fox Management
When I moved into the apartment I rented from Fox, the toilet was leaking. Like a constant spray of water coming from the hose. There were also a lot of little things that needed to be fixed, like a heater that didn't turn off and so on. But the toilet thing, kind of important. I called them immediately. They said someone would be out the next day. The next day, no one came out. I called again, they said "sorry, there was an emergency, he'll be out in a couple of days." A week passes, I call again, "a couple of days" turns into 3 weeks (by that time I had figured out the "leak" was just that the toilet hose needed tightening and I had turned the fuse that controls the heaters off because it was summer, so everything was fixed and I had called Fox to tell them that everything had been fixed). So about a month after moving into this apartment, I get home from work to see some strange man in my bathroom. Fixing my toilet. That I had already fixed. And he had entered without any permission from me, without anyone home. And that creeped me the fuck out. And I was so elated when, a month later, the owner of the building sold it to my current landlord, who is the king of landlords and I will never move out because he's awesome.

The dreaded Wimbledon
I was living in a nice old house in NE Portland with roommates who were about to kill each other, so thanks to them, I decided it was time to find a studio and live alone for awhile. I found Wimbledon because they offered a good amount of space for relatively cheap. While it was nice for me at the time, the apartments are crappy and covered in mold and layers of yellowed paint. My apartment had a flea problem before I moved in and it never went away. The walls were paper thin and the neighbors were sometimes less-than-desirable. I never had any major problems, but knowing about the meth problem there, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

GOOD EXPERIENCES:

Garden Park Apartments
If they haven't been sold to Wimbledon Square (I heard rumors that they might have been), then I really recommend Garden Park. We had a nice, 1100-sq-foot 2BR 2BA apartment with a gorgeous deck and view for about $700 a month. Close to bus lines, well-kept and quiet. It was a perfect place. It's in SE Portland near 30th and Holgate (across the street from Luxurious Wimbledon Square!).

My current landlord
He is awesome. I live in a great 2BR townhouse and since he bought the property, he's always been right there to help if there's a problem. Like, the gutters were clogged over our front door, creating a waterfall, and before I had the chance to call him, he was up there with a ladder cleaning it out. THAT, my friends, is a good landlord. He's apparently buying up properties in SE Portland and while we just got a new neighbor to fill out our triplex, I'll let you all know if any of his other properties open up.

Wimbledon Square

Hey, what a great idea for a community! Good job, thiebes!

I'm going to be moving in a couple months away from where I'm living now in PDX, an apartment complex in SE called Wimbledon Square. And I suggest if you're looking for an apartment that you stay away from it.

Why? Here's some reasons -- the buildings are dilapidated, ugly, dirty, old and poorly maintained. The residents are very ghetto, many of them are drug users or 'unsavory' types, and there isn't any noise-proofing to keep you from listening to all their conversations. There are residents who will steal your laundry, and there are homeless people who go digging through the unsecured trash compactors daily. The apartments have poor carpeting, poorly-fitting cabinets, old plumbing (though I will admit the water pressure in my apartment is good), and electric heat that doesn't cover the place. I can't speak to the higher level apartments, as I'm living in the smallest apartment type, so perhaps some of the others are slightly better quality. But for me, it's like living in a college dorm.

Now here's the real problem: the management and maintenance are extremely poor. There is high turnover in the front office, so don't expect people to give a crap about your problems. Every time I've called for even a simple maintenance request (I've only had three), my partner and I have had to repeat call numerous times to get maintenance over. Security is a joke -- in certain areas, there is no light in the parking lot at night. They have video cameras which you can watch over closed-circuit television, but one resident on the Internet commented that after their car was broken into, the managers told them that they don't keep a tape of that video. So unless you catch a burgler redhanded, forget the cameras. Even though I haven't witnessed any crime here myself, I do not feel particularly safe in spite of the fact that the complex is in a decent area. If I were a woman, I'd definitely feel uncomfortable.

They had a two-alarm fire in 2005 which killed a tenant.

I could go on, but you all get the point. Good luck in finding a great place to rent!
