Back to reality after the final foreseeable trip, at least in the immediate future:) England was fabulous, though it felt very different being with Mom and Pat. We were seriously mishap-laden from the start as all three of us were without our bags for the first 4 days basically. lol, the first day in London was simply filled with finding a Catholic church (when in all honesty, if my mother were not there, I would have been going to a play;) And after mass, we went to Marks and Spencers just outside of the High Street Kensington tube stop to buy underwear, something to sleep in and another shirt. Then to Boots for other basic necessities. I took mom to the Chinese take out just up the street from my old flat before we returned for the night to our hotel room near Finsbury Park. The next morning we rented a car and drove to Chawton, where Jane Austen lived for the last 7 years of her life. It was amazing to be in the same place she inhabited, to see her little writing desk.

After Chawton, we drove to Stratford for our first night in the Bed and Breakfast. We were served English breakfast, which was good, but way more food than I'm used to consuming so early;) Anyway, that Monday was the day we were going to see Hamlet, so we went shopping yet again to find something for the theatre. I know that most people don't get very dressed up, but I had to. So after hours of searching at various shops (Next having surprisingly let me down...) I found something at New Look. lol, not the most interesting outfit, but I was not going to be seen looking like a ragamuffin in clothes I'd been wearing for 3 days. I even bought make-up so I'd look cute. So Monday was spent shopping and showering and getting ready;) We ended up eating at the Courtyard Theatre where the play was performed as they are doing construction on the main theatre. I had a bacon and brie baguette, just as I'd done when I was tramping around Stratford with Meg and Kurt 5 years ago. Before the play began, I went to the RSC shop, internally saying, "They have a little shop!" lol, only Doctor Who fans will get that and who am I kidding, I did that pretty much everwhere we went... this just happened to be the first one;) But anyway, there were fifteen things I wanted to buy, but I resisted, sticking to Hamlet things, the playbill, the poster and postcards. I met Mom and Pat in the mass of people trying to make their way to their seats. The play itself was unbelievably fantastic. I could go into great specifics but I won't because I want to post my full review, hopefully tomorrow night. Suffice it to say here that it was brilliant and they would be stupid not to release this for general viewing. I hope hope hope they do. I want to see this brilliance again!

We stayed two more nights in Stratford, but with a couple side-trips, mainly because we were waiting for our bags which finally arrived Tuesday evening. Earlier that day we were walking around Stratford and Mom and I did more shopping... found loads of cute stuff I wish I'd had the night before but have worked very nicely for other events. We also went to Holy Trinity to see Shakespeare's burial place. Afterwards, we drove to Kenilworth Castle, a ruined castle where Robert Dudley, Elizabeth I's favorite suitor, lived. It was beautiful! It had been a somewhat rainy day, but that doesn't bother me... In fact I love the heavy gray clouds as they make the already rather green landscape more brilliant. The green is more beautiful against gray skies than blue skies (green is complimented by gray, whereas the blue and green fight each other for precedence), but then I've always thought that, even here where I live. We have huge green trees everywhere and I always love how they look against an ominous sky. And from the top of the ruined castle was a particularly picturesque view of the English countryside. We drove to Warwick to see what we could see of the Castle even though we knew they would no longer be open. We were only able to steal a glimpse.

Wednesday morning, we went into town center to go to the sculptor park and Shakespeare's birthplace. We were planning on moving on completely from Stratford, so we made our way north and east to Chatsworth Estate. When we got there, Pat realized he didn't have his passport. Of course panic ensued, but thankfully it was only temporarily. Pat was going to drive back to the car park in Stratford, suggesting that Mom and I to stay there and he'd come back for us, but neither she or I wanted to stay without him. He decided he'd stay too and we'd go back to Stratford after, even though we insisted we didn't mind going with him then. Anyway, as it turned out, he had lost it in the car park and some wonderful soul turned it into the police. Thank God! Chatsworth is where the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire live, as well as those before them. One of which was the Duchess that the new Keira Knightley film is about. They apparently filmed at Chatsworth. It was also a film location for Joe Wright's Pride and Prejudice. Most of the interior of the estate, as to be expected, was very ornate and garish. Of course the pieces when viewed individually would be beautiful, but they all are overwhelmed in such close company. The one room I loved was the sculpture room, which was used in Wright's film. They even had the bust of Mr. Darcy still;) The house outside from the grounds is breathtakingly gorgeous! We walked around the grounds, did the maze and walked to the disappointingly rustic looking grotto. I was hoping it would at least look like the one where Mr. Darcy makes his insulting proposal to Lizzie in the pouring rain, but it was just a worn-down, wooden pavilion, which is surprising when compared to the extravagance of the estate itself. Later, when we were walking back towards the house, Mom and Pat got ahead of me and I ran down the hill toward them, saying, "Is there any felicity in the world superior to this?" All the scene needed was a downpour, a tumble down hill, and a man dismounting his horse to feel the burn and carry me and my sprained ankle home. lol, I couldn't help it. My reaction was uncontrollable;) After Chatsworth, we went to Chesterfield where we took pictures of the crooked spire of Church of Saint Mary and had dinner at a pub before heading back to Stratford. Pat drove to the car park to see if his passport was there. It wasn't but he'd find out the police had it when he called the next morning. And after he came back from the police, we left Stratford behind once and and for all, which was deemed the Rome of this trip because when Pat and I had our two week European trip in 2003, unforeseen circumstances had kept us there longer than planned.

We drove North to Kendal, so we could explore the Lake District on Friday. Walked around the town and ate Chinese. The girl at our inn had a great accent, probably the broadest we'd encountered so far. That night we watched Never Mind the Buzzcocks with Martin Freeman, which was hilarious. At breakfast Friday morning, we made friends with a man who was staying there on business. He was hilarious... told us about how he was disappointed when he traveled to NYC because he thought the food would be better. How he suggested that the men wear kilts in his daughter's wedding even though they're not Scottish... I can't remember what else he talked about, but he was nice and very amusing. We made our way towards Windermere, attempted to go to the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which is closed on Fridays... we drove around the windy, narrow roads and eventually made our way to Wordsworth's Dove Cottage in Grasmere. After walking the wrong direction in Grasmere, we finally found it off of the small highway we'd come from. It was tucked away from the street, hidden by modern buildings, one of which was another museum. Pat was trying to get information about the house, whether we could go through it by ourselves or if we had to have a tour guide. I was standing outside of the cottage looking at the pink roses which looked like they were growing up the white walls, reaching very near it's slate colored roof. It was beautiful... I'm mad I didn't get a picture; I don't know if I didn't have my camera with me or if it was my distraction at what happened next. I saw a man walking towards me. He was tall, with golden-brown hair, big blue eyes... He didn't look like he could be more than 28, but I thought he was at least a little bit older than me. He was wearing a very white oxford tucked into dark gray pants (much like the house, actually!). In those few moments he was walking in front of me, I'd imagined a whole history... A PhD student, doing his doctorate on Romantic poets, who works as a guide at the home of one of his favorites... Apparently in my daydreaming I was staring. He smiled at me, all bright eyes... At first I didn't break the eye-contact and did so only briefly when he spoke before entering the cottage, "Hello. How are you?" Which my mother answered politely while I simply stood with my heart quickened in surprise at being caught. Pat came out to say that it would be a half hour wait for the next tour and we still wanted to go further north, so we didn't end up going. Of course, I kind of wish we had, but I wasn't about to confess why.

We had decided on heading to Carlisle to see Hadrian's Wall, but once we saw signs stating how close we were to Scotland, Pat really wanted to go... It was late, but he figured we could at least get dinner. At first we were going to get dinner in Gretna Green, which is just on the Scotland/England border... mostly we wanted to go because it's often mentioned in Jane Austen novels as where couples go to elope. But based on its size on the map, I suspected that it might be really small. And it was. There was the site where people would get married, a couple of restaurants and a small grocery store. That was the town... it looked like a nice rest stop;) But the restaurants were closing as we were arriving, so we bought a couple of things at the store to tide us over for the drive to Edinburgh. A couple of hours later we made it and decided to eat at a pub on the Royal Mile. This was where I finally mustered the courage to try haggis after two previous trips to Scotland... I got chicken breast stuffed with haggis and mashed potatoes... Mom got some kind of lamb with "neeps and tatties" or turnips and potatoes... I just love those names... it's like "hairy coo". I love Scotland's colloquialisms and accents... God, it does my head in, but then again so do Englands';) Anyway, I think that might actually have been our best meal. We all loved it. We took pics of the castle and then found our way out of the city and back down towards Kendal, as we'd already booked that second night at the inn.

Saturday morning we returned to London. It was mid-afternoon by the time we made it and we actually drove into Earl's Court and Kensington areas as there is no congestion fee on the weekends... We went to my old internet cafe, which had moved around the corner above Baker's Oven. We had to book a hotel for that night, our flights to Ireland the next day and our hotel there... by the time we finished it was time to find mass... much to my annoyance this was yet another day in London gone without seeing anything of the city (aside from the area around my flat). Again, I wanted to be going to a play and we were supposed to meet up with Nena, but she was out and about with her friends... I didn't want her to feel like she had to miss out with them to be with us. I told her of course I'd love to hang out with her, so it was up to her. We decided to meet when we got back from Ireland. After mass, we had to find our way by car from Earl's Court to the King's Cross Travelodge where we'd be staying for the night. It was interesting trying to navigate and there were a few moments of traffic. I much prefer walking and/or the underground;) Of course, Pat was still driving, but I was giving the directions, but thankfully we didn't get lost. One thing I will say is that you definitely see more of the city this way. London is enormous and even after living there four months, I only skimmed the surface of all there is to see and do. There are more areas of London that I am completely unfamiliar with than those I know through and through... driving around that night made it clear.

End of Part 1. Part 2 to follow shortly…

I just... All right, so lately my parents have been more irritable than ever with how many hours we spend in the computer and the exact time we do (because, you know, they seem to think I can foresee what I'm gonna do for the rest of the month and when I'm gonna need the computer). After insisting for days, I gave up on trying to explain to them how I don't spend the whole day in the computer. I check my mail, do something else. I check my flist. I write. I gave up trying to explain to them how I have things for class to do on the computer and how, how whatever I have to write just... doesn't just appear whenever I sit on the chair, I don't sit down and immediately fill pages and pages of stories. There's a process, I gotta think about it, I gotta write it, and rewrite it and there are things I do in between. So, I gave up and we finally made a timetable, just to humour them.

Right. That was Friday. On weekends the timetible is different (aka. ignored), and today would be the first day it's effective. Technically I've got two daily hours in the computer. It pains me, but it's there. Now, I go to the computer on my time and my sister is there doing her homework. She's got a nice, bigger table on another room where she can do that, so I tell her I need to print some stuff, and she gets angry and starts shouting at me, telling me how I'm always kicking her out of the room. So I calmly inform her that I just need to print something, and that this is my time on the computer anyway, time that I wasn't using so she could stay there doing her fucking homework.

Finally, her shouting makes my father come in, and he starts telling me how I need to stop bossing her around and yaddayaddayadda. She storms out and my father keeps talking to me and I just... tune it out, to be fair.

So fucking tell me, what the hell is the timetable for? Does it even have a purpose? Because that was time I wasted thinking on the timetable. Not a lot of time, but wasted time I could have spent... I don't know, reading porn.

I have no problem with timetables, but it's like house chores. If we decide something, especially if you make me decide something, STICK TO IT. Don't just do whatever you want and then tell me I'm a selfish little brat who doesn't think of anyone else. Ugh. FAMILY.

edit: so, you know, if I don't really comment on your entries, it's because my parents kicked me out of the computer, but I read them. Or try to, at least.

Thank god for fandom.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YUUUU

  • Oct. 6th, 2008 at 11:26 AM

¿No me crees?

We love you, baby!!!!!!!!
