Sara pulled at her necklace, running the pendant up and down the chain, left and right, listening to the soft gliding noise.

Setting down the biro that she’d been chewing, Sara took a short break. She felt drained. Sitting back in the prison chair, breathed a sigh and ran her slender hands through the front of her loose hair.

Shifting her weight in the revolving chair she spun around, at first just a fraction – enough to see the sink – but gradually she worked herself into a full spin.

Whirring around her lab coat flared out at the hem as she gained momentum, her hair whipping up. The room twisted around her, the window, the bed, the desk, the sink. Around and around, warping and contorting. Sara squeezed her eyes shut hard, her rosy cheeks lifted as she smiled and let out a, “squeeeak” of joy.

The door opened,

“Sara?”

Just a drabble that I didn't actually have the time to spend writing it, but...I already did. Reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainence, watching Prison Break, and listening to my iTunes on shuffle creates a sad, sad ficwhore out of me.

Blame the idea that I've had rattling 'round my mind of Michael and Lincoln finally getting a moment's peace after all this b.s.

Summary: Post-Season 3. Michael and Lincoln finally get sleep after all of the excitement and chaos of their lives. Lincoln finally realizes his responsibilities.

“Having a baby brother is a big responsibility, Lincoln,” his mother used to say when she was pregnant with Michael.

Lincoln had always been excited for babies. Michael, LJ, even when his friend’s girlfriend got pregnant in high school, Lincoln was excited. It was when it was his turn to take on all that responsibility came around that he fell short. He created bad situations for himself, and horrible situations for the children.

He didn’t like to think it, but maybe all that nagging his mother did had warped his mind. Perhaps he’d been over prepared for the responsibility, so when the time came he had nothing but his anxiety left over. No actual gumption.

When Michael was a sophomore in high school, he used to say, “Robert Pirsig calls that a ‘gumption trap’,” whenever Lincoln told him he’d quit his job because of whatever bullshit reason he’d invented on the bus ride home. If Lincoln asked who Robert Pirsig is, and why he talked like some old fucker, Michael would just sigh half-heartedly.

Sometimes, thinking back on those days, Lincoln wanted to kick himself. What had made him think he could keep living on like that at the expense of everyone else around him? But then, days when that realization did shine through the thick cloud of indolence and weed-smoke, all it ever did was make him feel more sorry for himself.

“Michael? You awake?” He watched his brother’s chest rise and fall on the hotel bed, already knowing the answer to his question.

Quietly his brother’s voice drifted through the sebaceous night air:

“I am reaching, but I fall
And the night is closing in.
And I stare into the void,
Into the whirlpool of my sin.”

They let the words sit for a second, before their echo melted away like a trace in cake batter. “What’s that from?” Lincoln asked, sure it would turn out to be something he should have read in school.

“Les Miserables, the musical.”

Slowly, the truth weaseled its way into Lincoln’s brain. “That’s pretty fruity, man.”

In the silhouetting darkness, Michael’s smile was no more than a sharp exhalation of breath.

“Yes. I suppose it is. That doesn’t stop it from being accurate.”

Michael rolled on to his side and Lincoln could feel the grey eyes surveying him. His shirt felt lighter, and it took him a moment to realize Michael was toying with the fabric.

“No, I guess it doesn’t,” he answered dumbly. “Better than something I could come up with.”

Another exhalation of a smirk; “AC/DC is equally applicable.”

Lincoln put his arm around Michael, pulling him closer. His brother’s head rested safely against the crook of his neck, and Lincoln felt the hot wheeze of breath across his collar bone like a welcome summer breeze.

With the rumble of sleep, his own voice cut across the stifling room:

“If you need a friend
Don't look to a stranger.
You know in the end
I'll always be there.

And when you're in doubt
And when you're in danger
Take a look all around
And I’ll be there.”

Again there was silence, until the words had sunk back down from their own heightened place in the moment. Michael cautiously asked, “What golden oldie is that?” No doubt he expected to be given the generic tongue-lashing for never being able to tell AC/DC from ZZ Top.

“Depeche Mode.”

Michael shifted and laughed out loud, buring his nose against the smooth skin behind Lincoln’s left ear. “Now who’s fruity than whom?”

Lincoln’s hand dragged along his brother’s side and grabbed him at the base of the skull, playfully. “I’m not the one who knows the difference between ‘who’ and ‘whom’.”

“There’s nothing effeminate about good grammar…besides, I really don’t remember if that’s right or not. I‘ve sort of had more important things on my mind.” Michael stopped playing with Lincoln’s shirt, instead smoothing his hand across Linc’s chest. As the hand gripped the back of his head, he let out a contented sigh. “At least its over for now.”

Lincoln marveled at how, knowing full well “it” was anything over, Michael could sound so at peace. His hand slipped down the back of his neck, gripping his shoulder and pulling him in closer still, if there was a closer still. “Michael…”

“Linc?” Michael’s response said he was already half-asleep.

“Thank you. For everything, I mean. Not just now but…you’ve been picking up the slack for me since you were born and…it hasn’t been fair. But it will be. I promise you it will be. I mean, I always planned on turning my life around I just--kept losing heart, y‘know?” When he didn’t get a response, he shook Michael’s shoulder lightly. “Michael?”

A tired, muffled voice muttered, “Robert Pirsig calls that a ‘gumption trap’. Losing hope like that…”

By the time he’d let the words settle in, Michael was asleep. He was exhausted from throwing his organized, color-coded life away for his deadbeat brother. Lincoln let him sleep; he was the reason Michael needed it. If he was going to take his responsibility, he figured he’d start small.
