today is my little girls anniversary! she was given to me 18 years ago. we think she was around a year old when we got her. she was a wild little thing scared of people, especially hands. i would spend hours with a gloved hand in her cage with food or toys on it, trying to get her to land on me. eventually we let her out in my room to let her fly around. somehow she trained us and eventually ruled the house. now she loves nothing more then to give kisses and cuddle in my hand. i love my little phoebe so much and am so happy she came into my life.

New to the community... and to owning birds!! [Feb. 13th, 2008|01:49 pm]

Hullo everyone!!!

I am new to this community, and as the subject states in this post, new to owning birds too!

I am getting a parrotlet in a few weeks from a breeder and am really excited! I have had some family pet budgies and a cockatiel when I was a lot younger, but this will be MY first bird. I recently travelled to the breeder to visit with her and fell in love with one of the male babies. I also got to see the parents and she has many other magnificant birds that I loved. I think my next bird will be a painted conure, but for now just the parrotlet as we live in an appartment and I am told they are very quiet birds perfect for that sort of living accomodation.

Anyway, here is a picture of my baby boy! I do not have a name for him yet, but I'm sure something will come up once I get him home and start to see some of his personality.

My babies are growing up before my eyes. ;_;

Today, my Cupid turns six years old.
Friday, my Angel turns six years old. (Anyone want to guess where I derived their names from? Ahaha..)
And Sunday, the youngest of the clutch, Tweety, turns six years old.
Happy hatchday to all three babies!

AND we can't forget their lovely daddy, Kiwi, who will play basketball after the cut. :D

Aaaaaand anyone remember Sunset, the beautifully coloured lutino mutation lovebird? Turns out she's just plain lutino! The bad news is that she's still living with my cousin. The good news (bad news for the cousin) is that I'm cracking down hard on her, checking with her everyday to make sure she changes food and water, refills foraging toys (I bought her Barrel of Fun - she's a clever little one and opened it immediately. She has a lot of potential.), and just let her out to be a bird. The better news is that I'm 18 now -- turned 18 in December when it was still very cold out -- and can take her to the vet myself, but will have to wait till it warms up because in the recent weather, going outside with exposed skin = frostbite in less than 5 minutes. Anyway, Sunset loves people and needs a bath. :(

You might be able to see the oh-so-responsible cousin Guitar Heroing in the background of the first picture. (For the record, I beat her. :D)

My tiels have one of those fuzzy hidey-huts in their cage, and just today one of them, Jack, has been hanging out in it since I came home from work and became very aggressive when I approached. If he was a female, I would think he'd be eyeing it as a nesting site, but despite not being dna sexed, I'm fairly sure he's male (normal grey, bright head, solid tail). He'll be coming up on a year old this spring. He's normally very, very friendly and never nippy, so this is puzzling! Once out of the hut, he stepped up just fine and is now just hangin' out with me like normal. I have two tiels that are suspected to be female but Jack's not particularly friendly with either so I wouldn't have expected mating to be on his mind.

Is this normal behavior? Hormone-related? Puberty? Should I be removing the hut or ignore it or is this maybe a sign of 'when to rearrange the cage'?

Also, Jack tried kale for the first time last night, and is really only interested in the veins of the leaf. He does the same thing with spinach - the leaf part doesn't interest him, but the vein/spine is VERY yummy! XD He and one other are getting their flight feathers back finally, and are slowly taking longer flights across the room, usually to come to us sitting on the couch. D'aww.

I have (another) question about Everybody's Favourite Cage. Are the food dishes accessible from outside? It's hard to see in the picture. Danke!

When it comes to traveling by air, what are the best types of carriers to use? Is it possible to put in two cockatiels and a parakeet (they get along) in the same carrier if it's big enough?

Someone posted this seller somewhere, she does mini sculptures of dogs and other animals. So I went to check her out and she has the most adorable little macaw ever.

I'm not related to this seller, never even saw her before today. Just thought I'd share :)
