| Cockatoo Behavior/Intelligence Info |
[Feb. 12th, 2008|03:36 am] |
Does anyone know of any good resources regarding wild cockatoo behavior and/or intelligence? They don't have to be online -- print references/books are actually what I'm hoping for. I have to give a speech for a class and randomly chose cockatoo behavior and intelligence as my subject and thought I'd ask here for ideas, since I figure cockatoo owners/other parrot lovers would probably have at least a few ideas :)
Thanks in advance, even if you don't have any! |

| Colorful, original bird photos wanted! |

| | artistic | ] | Hello parrot_lovers I'm taking an AP drawing class this year and my portfolio (due in may) requires a "concentration," or set of 12 paintings and drawings with a theme. Of course, I want my theme to be parrots! However, my only live models are two lovies, and I need a more diverse range of subjects. So I ask anyone interested in receiving a painting of their beeb (a scanned copy of) to comment me your best, most unique, interesting (angles, poses and expressions), colorful photos for me to paint.
If I receive more than 10 photos, I'll pick the best ones...
oh yes, and as an afterthought--perhaps someone in Los Angeles/central LA wants to volunteer their birds for a live session (models are much preferable to photos)
thanks so much in advance! |

| The green cheek personality summarized in pictures. |
[Feb. 12th, 2008|01:49 pm] |
My majestic plan to rearrange the house to get the GCCs out more has worked perfectly. They're now coming out into a playstand without much fuss (on their own) and have both stepped up onto a stick for me when I needed to retrieve them.
Today, I remembered to bring the camera downstairs, and thus you get a few conure pictures, including the epitome of the green cheek (and most others, truthfully) in pictures.

My four parrots getting a treat. Rita, the 17 yr old blue front amazon, Dawkins the 6 year old white cap pionus, Lulee the 4 year old green cheek conure, and Annie the 10 month old black capped conure.

| Meeting birds |
[Feb. 12th, 2008|03:01 pm] |
So I finally met Piddle and Paddle, bonded pair of GCCs today. Apparently "slightly tame" means "won't lunge at you when you get near the cage." They wouldn't interact with me or Ellen (the woman running the rescue) at all, instead hiding in their Happy Huts. NOT what I'm looking for in a bird(s).
( Long discussion about meeting an IRN at the rescue, and about possibly purchasing a Dusky Conure )
So my questions for you... * Why shouldn't I buy one of these beebs who're just what I want for the same "price" as a rescue bird? * Got any good resources for Dusky Conure info? * What else should I be thinking about or asking?
I have to say I'm leaning towards purchasing a dusky conure. It wouldn't be a *bad* choice to adopt Barney the IRN, but it wouldn't be a *good* choice either. |

| Tell me about Bourke's Parakeets |
[Feb. 12th, 2008|04:25 pm] |
Hi all,
Last night I came across an ad on Craigslist for a tame, friendly male rosy Bourke's parakeet, and I was wondering if you all could tell me more about them. I poked around the internet for information on them last night, but I didn't find a whole lot.
What I gather from the few sites I found is that they're very calm and quiet, almost more like a passerine in terms of movement/behavior than a parrot, but that they can also be very affectionate. They can whistle, sometimes talk, and they prefer being on the ground over climbing on bars like regular budgies. They're crepuscular and tend not to destroy toys nearly as much as most other parrots.
What else, though? Do they make good, snuggly companion birds? If I'm looking for a bird that'll sit on my shoulder, accept head scratches, and play with me, is a Bourke's a good bet? What type of play activity can I expect from them? Do they have the same powder/dander issues that cockatiels have, or are they more budgie-ish in terms of feather dust? And can they live with/get along with budgies?*
I'm still very seriously mulling it over. I'd like to learn as much as I can before I make any big decision like bringing another bird into my flock, especially when that bird is a member of a species I know little to nothing about.
I appreciate any input!
* I currently own three sweet baby budgies. They're dears and I love 'em, but they're not snuggly with me in the least. They babble with me and are fine with me standing by them, but they're very hand-shy and seem to prefer each others' company over mine. |

| Cockatiels and songbirds |
[Feb. 12th, 2008|04:36 pm] |
Hi all! I'm interested in getting a songbird to keep next to my cockatiel, Sunny, to keep her company when my dad and I aren't fussing over her. I've heard of people doing this and since I don't have the time for (or desire to get) a second cockatiel, I thought it would be a good alternative so there would be at least another bird around. So my questions for you all are:
- Have you kept a songbird alongside a single parrot (especially a cockatiel), and if so, what was your experience?
- Have you gotten a songbird to keep a parrot company, only to have the parrot completely ignore the songbird? (I'm afraid that will happen. Heh.)
- Do you have any suggestions for what kind of songbird to get? Right now I'm thinking about a canary.
Thanks in advance for your input. :) |
