| Orangey water around poop |
[Jan. 23rd, 2008|06:35 am] |
About 10 days ago I noticed my newly bought (home for one week at the time of the tremble start) having little trembles. He had no nasal discharge or sneezing.
I took him to the bird doc on Monday. Bird doc did a mouth swab, and said he didn't have a bacterial infection. He didn't do a poop test because there was no poop in the cage. He said come back tomorrow if he is still trembling. He was trembling a little, but I didn't bring him back at the time because I figured I'd watch him. I thought maybe the bird would get some in case shots that didn't apply to anything he actually had. Like the calcium supplements I took home. I don't think the trembles had anything to do with a calcium deficiency.
Well bird boy has been happy. But he still has had these little trembles. I kept the heating pad on over the cage. Turned it off yesterday because I figured it was pretty hot in my house even for me.
This morning I see underneath trembley boy that his poop has orangey water cast (which probably must be red cast), but other bird's water ring around poop has a green cast. I have not fed them anything orange or red (other than than the new Zupreem pellets).
Bird doc is off on Wednesdays which means I am going to do some quick calling at 8:00am to find a super good bird doc. I may have to drop birdie at my mom's to take him in. What could it be? |

| Classifieds meeting questions |
[Jan. 23rd, 2008|06:43 am] |
Upon suggestions from quite a few people I started combing through Craig's List last night, responded to a couple ads, and will be going to see a Senegal probably this weekend. I'm a little nervous about selecting a bird via Craig's list - the last time I actually picked out a bird was more than half my lifetime ago, and I was 12 years old at the time so chances are my parents did lots of the important parts. So I have questions I want to ask the bird's current owner, and questions I want to ask you all.
( Questions for owner / Things to look for )
( Questions for y'all )
A few things she did say in her email to me is that he'll let anyone handle him (including the Step-Up command) but is most comfortable with his owner, but he won't let anyone pet him. She is not asking an adoption fee.
( Our communications )
I'm excited about the prospect of a new bird, I'm nervous I'll mess it up and get a bird I can't live with and end up having to rehome, I'm pretty sure I can tolerate most birds but toleration isn't the goal here... Bleh. *post* |

Hello, this is my first post in this community. Pickleboot suggested I join. I own 2 blue and gold Macaws, 1 orange-wing Amazon, 2 Indian Ringnecks, 1 Quaker parrot, and 1 cockatiel. Please excuse my ignorance, but this is our first egg experience. Cockatiel just laid her first egg. I came home and was going to clean her cage when I noticed the egg. I didn't know what to do so I turned to the internet. We have an aviary vet, but she has difficult hours and this was late at night. So, I posted about the incident in my personal journal and that's when Pickleboot responded. She said that I don't want to encourage nesting and I need to be sure she doesn’t become egg bound. This is what I have done so far: Any suggestions, things to watch for, advice is appreciated. I joined the community and hope to make some strong friendships with fellow birds lovers. All of our birds are rescues and Cheek-O is the first bird we took in. Before I owned birds I didn’t understand the kind of bond you can have with them. Now that I own birds I can't imagine my life without them. The orange-wing Amazon, Sidney, is my baby and is with me almost always. The bond we have is something I never knew before. I'm sure you all understand. |

I just posted two weeks ago about my family's budgie, Maxwell. It was his 7th birthday on January 8th...
Right now, he is lying on the bottom of his cage, with his wings spread and his favorite toys around him. He's on antibiotics, but it probably won't be much longer now.
My heart is just in my throat. I live in NYC, and my family is in NJ, and I probably won't make it there in time... Dammit.
**** ETA:
I didn't make it :( DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT |

| Cage Question |
[Jan. 23rd, 2008|05:58 pm] |
How long is a powdered coated cage supposed to hold up? I was cleaning Calypso's day cage this evening when I noticed rust spots developing on the brackets for the grating and on the edges of the grating itself. There's also rust spots on the seed catches and have been for a while, but I wasn't worried about them as she can't reach them. The cage is only about nine years old, and at $600 plus, it wasn't cheap. I kind of wish I sprung for the stainless steel now but at the time, it was just too expensive. I'm going to examine it more closely in the daylight and see how far the rusting has gotten. If it's gotten too bad, I might be in the market for a brand new, stainless steel cage. Hell, at least I could steam clean it!
Does anybody know of a good stainless steel brand? King makes 'em out of medical grade stainless that's exactly the same as what she's got for about $1600. Animal Environments is a little more expensive but it's also a larger cage; Quaker bar spacing would be extra though. Any suggestions?
Is nine years a good lifespan for a powder coated cage or not? |

| Hanging Bird gym |

| [ | mood |
| | artistic | ] | My boyfriend and I have just started to make our own playstands/gyms for birds. The first model we have out is a hanging orb that has been approved by our picky cockatiel. Each order is custom made to fit you and your bird's needs. It comes in 3 different sizes--small (15inches), medium (18inches), and large(21inches). There is also the option of sisal, hemp, or cotton rope and feeding/drinking cups.
The Hanging Orb that is pictured is a medium with sisal rope.
 ( Images ahead! )
If you would like something different, or have more specific needs, please comment or e-mail me at flyingfluff AT gmail DOT com and we can work out something together that both fits what you want and is reasonably priced.
NOTE: This business is just starting out, so the product you will receive will be greatly discounted. I have done some math and figured out that I'm just barely covering the material costs at this point. They start out at $35 plus $20* for s&h, but I will only be offering 3 more at this price. It will increase slightly afterwards, so I suggest you hurry if you want to get one while the cost is this low! I only accept PayPal at the moment and my paypal address is flyingfluff@gmail.com
* USPS was the cheapest at $17 + $3 for the box. UPS and FedEx was $21-$22. |

my lovebird has been doing some weird things lately. just for a bit of background she's a peachface, about 4 years old and has polyfolliculitis and wears a collar. she's the only bird in the house.
i've noticed a big change in her which i think is probably due to the fact that she grew up. in the last 4 (approx) months she's laid 2 clutches of 5 eggs each. after the first clutch she had a hormone shot to stop her laying another, but she did anyway. now she's onto her third clutch. she's laid 2 eggs so far, one of which is kind of oddly shaped. it's slightly bigger than normal and more pointed at the ends. can anything be done about her laying all the time? i'm not sure that hormone injections all the time are too good for her. could i be spending too much time with her? she considers me her mate, i'll assume, and we're in the same room for most of the day.
just now she horked up a big chunk of what looks like digested pellets. she was struggling with it for about a minute and then after regurgitating like mad and flapping her wings a bit she spat it out. it was more dry and solid than the usual bird puke but still kind of soft. she drank a bunch of water after that.
which brings me to my third concern. lately, whenever she drinks water, she makes a lot of noise. a lot of slurping and gurgling and it sounds like there's water in her nose, too, because she sniffles and sneezes.
another weird thing that she's starting doing is, when i give her scratches, specifically along her jaw(?) bone, she nibbles on the end of her tongue. she's only started doing that recently. anyone else have a bird that does that?
sorry for all the questions. i'm going to make a vet appointment for her anyway, but some insight would be appreciated. |

One of my regular categories of stress dream is about my birds (in the dreams there are often a few, even though I have only one) in danger. They're flying free, or being attacked by cats, or befalling all manner of less probable fates (e.g., drowning in seeds or turning into hummingbirds). I've never had a dream about danger to any other pets. Is this a common thing for bird people? |
