Budgie Food [Jan. 15th, 2008|04:13 pm]

What should I be feeding my budgies?

So, I was feeding them, for pellets at least, Zupreem's Naturals, but it was the Cockatiel (and other small birds size) because I couldn't find anything smaller and I really liked the look of it. This weekend I went to the store because I was running low and I found parakeet size 'Fruit Blend'. Then I came home and read the ingredients and its basically the same ingredients except instead of dried veggetables it is dried fruit. Hrm. Problem, right?

So, since I'm going to have to buy a different one anyway, what do you all recommend? And from where dost thou purchase it?

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

My brown-headed parrot, Griffin, does this weird thing where she drops her wings down whenever my mom comes into my room where she is and talks to/holds her. She also makes the head-bobbing like she's going to regurgitate food (but hasn't actually done so that I could tell). She's done these things once or twice when she was just with me but she does it every time my mom's in here. Anyone have any idea why she does this? Is it something we should try to steer her away from? Thanks in advance for any thoughts. :)

Romantising Parrot Ownership? [Jan. 15th, 2008|06:07 pm]

[mood | contemplative]

So I have been really contemplating parrot ownership, trying to decide wheter I am ready for the "child like" responsability. I would like to own a bird eventually though.
When I was little I used to have a little blue budgie. He was a really neat companion and a good buddy. He got sick one day (coincedentaly the day when all vet offices were closed) and my parents did all they could but he died. I don't think I had him long enough for him to go through sexual maturity because I don't remember him ever being mean.
I also had the priviledge of raising my friend's baby duckling. It had imprinted to me and I took care of him until I gave him back to my friend's ranch. It was soo cool when he was an adult, he still remembered me and would sit on my shoulder. lol a full grown mallard sitting on my shoulder! He was so great.
It's all these experiences plus taking care of birds in petstores that really turned me on to possible parrot ownership. However, I want to figure out whether the parrot I picture as my compainion is a realistic idea. So I have some questions.
As I said before I was interested in mainly pois (meyers and senegals) and gcc's. What I want in a bird is an animal that is happy when I get home, and will ride arounnd on my shoulder and play and cuddle with me. I'd like to be able to take him to parks and other interesting and parrot friendly places (on a leash of course). Is this a realistic idea?
Also I was curious about sexually maturity. I've heard people say they are never the same after they mature. Is this a bad thing? Because if all parrots (or the majority) turned nasty when or as they matured I wouldn't think that too many people would be adopting/purchasing adult birds.
Also, does a bird become a one person bird because of lack of social training or is it just something that happens and cannot be corrected? Because if we get a bird, I'd like it to accept my boyfriend. Also what if it bonds to my boyfriend and not me? That'd be a real drag considering I'd be the one caring for the bird.
Have all the birds you've owned been really moody? Do birds not remain as stable emotionally as other animals?
I guess I just find the whole moodiness and and such a little daunting. I've always told people that were interested in getting a bird that they were more like people than other animals.
Also I have heard that blue and gold macaws start out nasty and then get sweeter and sweeter as they mature. I this true? BEcauseif it is I think I'll just wait till I get the space for a macaw. I don't really want to own two birds at once and with their lifespans getting one now with a questionable personailty would be a bad decision if a b&g is what I'd like to do in the future.
Any other insight is more than welcome. I just want to make sure I'm making a good decision (I always get nervous before taking on something I've never done before). I trust you Bird Brains to steer me in the right direction!

EDIT: I have decided to stick with my scaley babies for the time being, and get a bird when I have a house and don't work as often. To respond to someone's question: If the bird bonded to someone else, I would work with it, but of course I would still love the animal. :) Duh it's a bird, they're for lovin lol! And yes, I do like to put in a lot of time in researching before I take in any animal. I always encourage it too lol. It's a huge problem in the reptile community as well as the bird community that people jump into pet ownership without realizing what they're infor and then getting rid of said animal. :( Anyways, thanks for all the help you guys. I'm going to take my leave from the community, because reading all your bidry stories will make me want one soooo bad and that will just tease me hahah. Byebye bird brains! Thank you for everything!

need help [Jan. 15th, 2008|08:32 pm]

I'm posting this for my mom and she asked me via a co-worker. Her co-worker has a Lesser Sulfer Crested Cockatoo, nice bird, was abused by kids in a previous home though and isn't fond of children. Susan has had him for a while and they've gotten along amazingly. BUT now come to find out her youngest daughter is pregnaut, and knowing how Rocky reacts to children she's decided to re-home him. I'm really not to happy about this, since we had fosterd him and she had convinced us she'd keep him forever. It's sad because he's only four and now has to look for home number four. If you include us for the few weeks we had had him.

So I guess, if there is anyone around here that would be willing to adopt a LS2 in Florida cage toys and all. Let me know. Don't make light though, I would like this home to be his last, he dosen't serve this. Thanks again.

honehe sent me over from the conures group!
Hi~
I'm new...  My name is Rachel and I am very lucky to have 2 Conures in my life, a Sun named "Love" and a Nanday named "Carbon".

I have recently found that the state of PA is trying to ban Nandays without a grandfather clause, so I am at my wit's end and hearbroken(as I reside in PA).
Has anyone else had to deal with this?
Anyone else have Nandays in PA?
They are to decide on the legislature at the end of this month.
honehe said this has been a matter of discussion here already. I'm not sure what to do.
I really want to go to Harrisburg for this, but 2 kids a job and a husband prevent the 5 hour drive. :(

Well that was kind of a depressing  introduction, but it was an introduction.
To make up for the dreary text content, here are some photos...

My husband with Love and Carbon
Thanks for any advice!

Dayum! O.o

Ambitious little bird, wot?

I don't think I'll give my own Quaker this opportunity as it would probably make her intensely hormonal.
