| A little concern I have o_O |

I posted an entry here about a month ago concerning my lovebird Kiwi. I felt that she was losing the feathers around her eyes (and her nostrils as well!)
I took her to the vet after I read over the comments made by the kind people here :) They said that they didnt see any visible mites (they took samples from her face with a scotch tape and looked at it under a microscope) but they gave her a mite treatment anyways. When I told them that I keep her in a cage with another lovebird, they told me that the other lovebird (Lychee) may be over-preening Kiwi. I cannot watch them 24/7 because I go to work during the day but while I am home I have been watching them closely, and I actually don't see Lychee preening Kiwi's head too much..(Lychee seems to like demanding for preening rather than offering them..) Before the mite treatment I used to see Kiwi occasionally scratching her head with her feet or rubbing her eyes against her perch, but she doesnt seem to do it that much anymore. Good sign :)
Here is the photo that I posted here before, taken December 17, 2007 ( photo1 12/17/07 )
Here is the photo that I took last night, (almost 3 weeks after i took her to the vet) ( photo2 1/11/08 )
Do you guys think she has gotten better??? I guess I could kiiiind of see new feathers growing in near the inside of her eye... but her nostrils are still so bald!! You usually dont see nostrils with lovebirds because their feathers cover them :( How long do feathers usually take to regrow?
I found a bird-only avian vet about 30 min from my house so I was wondering if I should take her there for a second opinion. Another thing that has been bothering me is that Kiwi has gotten a mite treatment but Lychee hasn't...and i keep them in the same cage...stupid me. I am debating whether I should take them both in again so they could BOTH get mite treatments done...
If Kiwi continually doesnt seem to get better I guess I will have to put them in separate cages. :( Which will be very sad since they are always cuddly with eachother. If I do decide to put them in separate cages, should I put the cages near each other so they can see eachother? Or will that cause more stress? (I can see you, but i cant cuddle/play with you!)

| | sad | ] | in the last 2 weeks or so, Cricket has become the worlds grumpiest cockatiel. D:
he used to be my sweet little guy, quiet, but always up for head, neck and face scritches.
now, he still steps up onto my hand but whistles and makes various peep noises and refuses to let me pet him, even lunging at my finger if i get close. today was the worst attitude yet. :/
he just finished his first moult and has finally fully regrown his clip and to be honest, im half tempted to get him clipped again because hes just too much to handle when hes pissy AND flighted. i will be honest here and admit that ive been somewhat busy lately and had a small vacation at the end of december, so Cricket hasnt been out of his cage as much as he would like...
is there anything i can do to win back my sweet little buddies heart? i miss him :(
EDIT: apparently he has hit puberty and become a bit of a hormonal nightmare. pray that it doesnt last long or we may be eating shake-n-bake cockatiel one of these nights! j/K ;P
thanks for the help! |

| | blah | ] | A little over a month ago I posted about my parakeet Maxwell and his loss of using his right foot. My mother and I took him to the vet and she told us that he had a tumor that was pressing against his nerves causing the leg to be paralyzed. We saw it coming, unfotunetely.
He was doing okay for a while; he was eating, interacting well with the other birds, singing, etc. As of yesterday though, he seems to be on his last legs. He was sitting on one of his perches with his left foot while he had his beak gripping the side of the cage. As far as I could tell, he kept that position for most of the day. I was afraid to let him by the other birds, because they've taken to picking on him because they know that something is wrong with him. I checked his food and he had not eaten, so I tried to at least get him to eat SOMETHING...a cracker, vegetables, millet, etc. He ate a little bit, but wasn't too interested in it. He was also very puffed up, so I covered the cage a little and turned up the heat. Today he wasn't as puffed up and didn't seem as pitiful.
I was wondering...do you think there is anything else I could do for him to make things easier for him on his last couple days? He wants to be out of the cage badly. I let him out today for about an hour and he was flying wonderfully with the other birds. He loves being with them even though they pick on him. My mother, brother, and I are also talking about euthanasia. Do they perform it on domestic birds? Is it very expensive?
Any help would be excellent. Thank you... |
