Family history [07 Dec 2009|02:06pm]

phoenixwind
Hallo,

My family are of French descent (currently living in Australia) and when I go to live in Paris next year I hope to do some research on my family's origins. My family emigrated from France at least 200 years ago to the Seychelles colony. Where would I begin to search? Can anyone suggest libraries or archives that I could go to for information?

Crim'Expo et Flashcards [01 Oct 2009|09:14am]

bluemchenblatt

Hi everyone, I'm a student in Paris and I've only been here for about a week and a half. My dad, who worked in Spain for a while, gave me a 500 euro bill before I came here. A lot of the banks don't let me exchange it for smaller bills and I'm convinced no store is ever going to take it. One of the ladies who works at BNP Paribas told me to go to BNP Paribas Nation, Gare de Lyon, which confused me. There are BNP Paribas near Gare de Lyon and near Nation. I know this is rather specific, but does anyone know which one she's talking about? Or just where can I change this giant, useless note?

Thanks in advance.

life as a renter in Paris [10 Sep 2009|10:50pm]

EDIT 11 Sept: Thanks everyone for your advice to stand my ground! My landlady came by today and I convinced her she needed to pay, so she called a plumber and he came an hour later! He replaced the whole tank and its insides and it came to 339 euros. But that was cheaper than some of the other places we called. AND the guy who came (Yohan) fixed my door for free. The company was Entreprise Quentin Pere & Fils, in case anyone needs a good plumber in Paris.

Bonsoir!

I have 2 questions for anyone who knows about renting in France:

My landlady claims that I, as the renter, am responsible for "small" repairs in the apartment.

1.Does anyone know if this is true, and if so what is "small," or where I could find this information?
2. Do you know a reliable plumber and/or handyman?

Specifically: the toilet is not working well and I need a plumber and she says I need to pay for it. I think that the (very old) innards of the toilet will all need to be replaced, and that could get expensive.

Additionally, the hinges on the bathroom door have rusted and broken (thanks, no air circulation in Parisian bathrooms!), so I need someone to fix those too. And I'm not made of euros, ha!

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me!

Dames! Drinks! Drawings!

Come bask in the wonder that is Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School, a series of unusual life-drawing sessions in Paris, starring fabulous models and burlesque dancers!

August is vacation time in Paris, but that doesn't mean we can't keep drawing! On Saturday August 8th, from 9-11pm, Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School will be putting on a mellow, vintage-style drawing session as part of the month-long Retro Mania festival: http://www.fiftiessound.com/party.htm

Don't forget to bring a sketch pad, eraser and pencils. Participation in the drawing session is 5 euros.

The event will be held at Nex Step, 11 Cour Debille, Paris 11th (small street facing 175 Avenue Ledru Rollin), metro: Voltaire.

So I'm moving to Paris at the end of August on a student visa. I'll be enrolled at Sciences Po and I'm thinking about getting a part time job since I can work for up to 20 hours a week. HOWEVER I would rather not teach English.

How hard would it be to get a job at a clothing store or something of the sort?

I've been taking French for 6 years so that's not a problem.

cross posted.

bonjour, tout le monde!

i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on places i could shop in paris for young men's formal and casual suits (with and without waistcoats). i've got a tight budget, and i'm looking for something that would fit an average sized body at 162cm tall. almost everything i find is either too big or too small. also, i am more than open to second hand stores, so if anyone has recommendations on those, too, i'd appreciate it!

thank you!

Salut fellow Parisians,

Is anyone here an elementary-school English teacher, or work at an elementary school? I ask because I am moving back to the States in 2 weeks and find myself with a lot of extra supplies left over from the year. Here's some of the stuff I have:
- lots of colored construction paper and colored printer paper
- lots of stickers (some say things like "great job!" and "super!" and there's a wide variety of others)
- flashcards of colors & shapes, numbers, first words, and phonics letters/combinations (like "ph")
- a wide variety of little toys and stuff I used for prizes (pencils, play-doh, a bit of everything)
- and other stuff that I'm sure you will love!

I live in the 19th. I can also meet up in the center of the city if you want. Email me at miss.christine.b@gmail.com!

Merci et bonne nuit!

Buying health insurance in France [30 Jun 2009|04:26pm]

manningkrull
Hello! Can any expats recommend a good health insurance company in France? I'm a long-stay visitor (not a student, not working for a French company) and I need to buy my own health insurance in France. I'm having no luck figuring out how to find good insurance companies to contact! My appointment for my new titre de sejour is coming up quickly and I'm getting nervous! Thanks!

Charm bracelet and Christmas ornament [11 Jun 2009|03:33pm]

greenie_breizh
Hi everyone!

A friend has asked me to bring her back a Paris-themed charm bracelet link and/or a Paris-themed Christmas ornament (preferably the Arc de Triomphe). I lived in Paris for 3 years but I moved to Vancouver two years ago and never had a chance to do much of the touristy stuff in Paris, so I'm not sure where I could find either item. Would anyone have a souvenir shop or a Christmas ornament store to recommend?

Thanks! :)
