While we will be going back to the doctor again soon, I thought I would ask around for mom to mom insight.

when my son crawls, well, if you can call it that, he isn't really on his knees and hands. He supports himself with his forehead, his legs are straight as if he is trying to stand up, and his body ends up in are sort of upside v-shape. somehow he manages to scoot about the room like this. He will be 9 months on the 15th and was a month pre-mature. Has anyone else seen their kid do this? His doctor is also concerned about the circumference of his head growing to fast, and I wonder if it could be related?

edit:
The best description of a similar crawl i found was called, "The bear crawl (baby walks on all fours, arms and legs unbent)" but he drags his head when he does this.

My nephew did the same thing. He also has a large head, so he was just learning to carry the weight of it. He's walking just fine now, and his body is catching up to his head.

our pediatrician has me all freaked out about his head because she said if it grew again in the next six weeks(this was at the last appointment) that he would need a cat scan to check for fluid in his brain. arg.

do you know what the circumference is?

My niece had the same thing when she was about 9 or so months old. Her head circumference grew faster than her doctor liked so they sent her for a head ultrasound to examine her brain. Luckily, everything turned out fine, but they too were worried about fluid in her brain. Hope everything works out, mama!

My son had to have a cranial ultrasound this week because of his large head circumference (at 9 months it's 50.5cm, only 1cm less than my 3yo) to check for water on the brain and, presumably, tumours. Turns out he just has a large head, the sonographer said he did have a little extra fluid than normal but that is not uncommon in babies with 'normal' big heads, and it wasn't anything to worry about. (I took him to the doctors last week because he had a mild fever, but his fontanelle was also bulging, which is not a good thing either).

I think if the head is suddenly lots bigger and moves rapidly up the centiles, that's when you have to worry. My son has had above a 99.9th centile head since birth and it has stayed there, he is developmentally normal and all that. I was still really worried though.

Hmm...perhaps it really is a big head thing. My baby is only two months old and doesn't crawl yet, of course. And when you hold her she's beginning to hold her head up quite well (whether you are holding her upright or doing tummy time on your stomach). But if you do tummy time on a mat she'll do a phenomenal downward dog but rarely lifts her head. The doctor seemed to imply her quickly growing head was a good thing; what are some of the risks?

my son is crawling just fine, although loves to randomly do the 'downward dog' as someone else put it. i think it's just fun maybe?

My almost 6 month old does this. But I don't know how big his head is, though it looks pretty big.

Kids find some pretty odd ways to get around. I wouldn't worry about that. I've had 4 and none of them did the traditional crawl until they were almost to the point of walking. In fact, my 7 year old used to scoot around on her back. lol

This. My cousin used to scoot around like the OP's kid. Her brother got around on his bottom. I rolled everywhere lol.

I dunno but that's going to make an amusing video when he brings a girl home.

My MIL has some pictures of my husband doing that when he was a baby.

My youngest brother used to do this. He was a skinny baby with a giant head. Now he's 18 and still skinny with a giant head. He can walk with his head up though.

My daughter used to do the bear crawl. It was so funny to watch. Eventually she learnt to put her knees down and do normal crawling.

My son did this thing where he would sort of "plow" his way along. His legs would be straight, but he couldn't (or didn't) really push up with his arms so he'd be going around in that upside-down V as you called it. He grew out of it and there were never any problems.
