I have a sad story...one of my little parakeets died! Her name was Tora, and she was so sweet...she was a little traumtized by an attack by my other bird Aya(who i found in a parkinglot)...for the last few hours of her life, she kept on shivering and twisting, as if in pain...I put her in a shoebox on a little blanket and have her a little pillow, and thats how she died...I miss my baby girl....

I have a question about my 11 year old parakeet -- lately he's been making a motion with his throat a lot, like he's going to regurgitate for a mate, but he just makes the motion like he's coughing up food, and doesn't actually cough anything up. I can tell he's feeling a little under the weather because he's fluffy.
Has anyone experienced this with their bird before?

| Acrylic/Plastic Bird Cages |
[03 Feb 2007|10:22pm] |
Awhile back in my local Petco they had on display a few acrylic bird cages. One was fully enclosed with a replaceable filter to help with allergens and the other was partially enclosed with the front and back having bars like a hamster cage. It also had the filter.
Now I went to our petco the other day to ask about them and none of the employees had no friggin clue what I was talking about.
I was wondering if anyone here knows about these cages or even what company makes them?
I googled for them but only came up with online companies that make acrylic cages by design and most of those are really out of my price range.

Hi everyone. New to the community.
My name is Felicia and I'm 20 years old. There are currently 5 parakeets residing in my home. 4 of which (2 males which we've yet to name and 2 females, Willow & Lilly) live together in one large cage, while my 5th parakeet, Sally (whom I took home because of an injured leg, which has healed beautifully with the help of avian vitamins and calcium supplements) lives in a smaller cage by herself.
My fiancee noticed this morning when while he was giving Sally fresh food and water that she had a slight discoloration on her beak (on the beak itself not the cere). It originally looked like her beak was a little dirty, so I gently tried to clean it off, but realized it wasn't something on the beak. Sally is between 4-6 months old and this is the first time We've noticed any problem with her beak. The discoloration from far away looks like a black color but upclose it's almost like a dark dark green.
We've called a few vets but all of the avian specialists in my area will not be in until monday. Now my question is does anyone know if this is a serious problem? Is this something that can be cared for without going to the vet (normally I wouldn't question going to the vet when there is a problem with my pets, but I'm currently out of work and I can't afford a vet visit unless it is a dire emergency).
Any help will be greatly appreciated. If needed I can post a few pictures (if I can get any, Sally is very camera shy).
Thanks! Felicia

When I learned how to qull (quilling is the art of paper curling, also known as paper filigree) the first thing I made was a little name plate for Trixie. And... well, she decided it just wasn't pretty enough, so she added her own little touch. See how the center of the blue flower is hanging out? Silly birdie.

| Hey everyone, new here, new parekeet owner. |
[19 Jul 2006|02:42pm] |
Hi! My name is Julie, and I own a baby parakeet. She/He (I think a girl because she has the white ring around the nostrils, but still has the purplish too) is about 4 months old, give or take. The stripes on the head are still on top of the head. Anyway... Sprite is the name. Sprite is silly, and likes to chirp along with any music in the background. I've noticed that Sprite is extremely fond of heavier music like: Rage Against the Machine, and similar stuff. Or at least I think it is fondness, when we put it on she chirps loudly, and bobs her head a lot...
Okay anyway, that was just a little intro. I do have a few questions. I got her from a petstore, petco... (actually I went back a week ago and all the birds looked sick, fluffed up, and tired...) I'm glad I got Sprite when I did. Anyway, I know that getting a pet from a pet store especially a bird, is less likely of an immediate connection. I've held her a few times, but it was all me grabbing and her trying to get away. When she got away I chased her. (I know bad start, but I didn't know what to do :( ) I talk to her, stick my hand in her cage and some times move it towards her hoping that she will jump on... No such luck, I do this daily along with changing food and water. So the question is:
I'd really like to begin holding her, because I hate seeing her in the cage ALL day every day... I want her to be able to come out... So did any of you buy your parakeet from a pet store, and successfully hand train them? If so, I'd like some tips/advice... :)
Another question is... She does this bobbing thing... but not like the head bobbing thing... She'll arch her back repeatitively and make a hacking sound... She does it randomly when I am talking sweet to her... not when anything bad or scary is happening... is this bad?
Thanks a bunch

| Hi I'm new ! |
[30 Jun 2006|01:16am] |
Hi, I just joined this community. I'm zel. I'm 21 & I have two parakeets. My brother bought them for my mom about two years ago I think. No one really pays much attention to them... no one has let them out of the cage because none of us really know anything about them lol. Well I've been spending some time with them & I decided to look them up.
I was wondering, since they're about two years old and havent been handled or anything could they still be trained & taught to talk?
Thanks for any input!

How can you tell what a bird is feeling? How long does it take a parakeet to adjust to a new home? Does anyone have any advice on bonding with a bird?
My 15-year old sister demands that no one look at her new parakeet, Kiwi, because she wants to bond with him. She can be really pushy and I'm worried that Kiwi is scared or bored. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to read a bird, you know?
We bought Kiwi two days ago. He's barely made any noise--just a few chirps on Sunday and a wierd guiro-like noise a few minutes ago. Sometimes his feathers look puffed out, like he's a green fluffy ball. I'm home sick today, so I moved him to the computer room with me (it seemed wrong to leave him alone all day with a blanket over his cage). Kiwi's mainly just sitting there and has played with his toys a couple of times. I haven't taken him out because my sister would have a heart attack and my cold germs might get on the gloves.

| Molting or Plucking... |
[06 Jan 2006|09:54pm] |
... how can I tell the difference? I have a 7 year old mustache parakeet that I recently bought from an owner who had her since she was a baby. The owner had to get rid of her due to him just not having time for her. Anyways.. she has adjusted nicely - she loves chatting and laughing - loves my husband to death, and kinda tolerates me..
in the past week - she has lost so many feathers around her neck and chest - I've seen her "preen" and then pull out a feather! Is she molting? or plucking?
Does anyone have pictures of their bird while they're molting? Also - if she was molting, wouldn't she be losing other feathers and not just those of her chest and neck?
We're really worried about our new cuting..

Hello - I just joined this community today hoping to find out more information about the new mustache parakeet I just got yesterday. She is 7 years old and I bought her from a family that no longer had time to give her the proper attention. I am not new to owning birds (We have an African Gray, cockatiels, and a green cheek conure), I just wanted to know if anyone else out there owns a little mustache?

I hope this type of post is allowed, if not, delete it. :/ (x-posted to a ton of communities.)
I am leaving for college on sept. 23, and my mom refuses to care for my two parakeets. i am looking for someone in the tacoma/seattle area who wants two parakeets-i am basically giving them away to anyone who is willing to care for them and love them-and maybe even let me visit them once and a while. there is no way i will be able to provide a home for them in the next 4 years-considering i will either be living in a dorm or apartment. i don't have any money to feed myself, let alone my two babies. -.-;;; this is breaking my heart, but i MUST find a loving home for them. please-if you, or someone you know, wants these two adorable little parakeets, please contact me as soon as possible. i have asked almost all of my friends, and most of them either live in apartments that don't allow pets, or just can't provide the type of care they need. most importantly, THEY CANNOT BE SEPARATED. THEY HAVE GROWN UP TOGETHER AND NEED TO BE TOGETHER ALWAYS.
( meet carrie and tommy )
please, this is really painful for me to ask, but i need someone to love my two parakeets and care for them because i can't anymore. I AM ASKING $20.00 FOR THESE TWO BIRDS AND ALL THEIR SUPPLIES. PLEASE HELP ME.

This community has had several posts in the past, made by people whose birds are in obvious need of medical care, and the people seem to be seeking reassurance that neglecting their bird (by denying them veterinary attention) is okay.
Birds need yearly medical check ups. (for an avian vet in your area, vist www.aav.org . They also need medical care if any change in behavior lasts more than a day, if your bird has been in an accident or if your bird shows signs of illness.
As you know, budgies are prey animals. They are experts at hiding illnesses: they have to be, or they would not have survived as a species. If you notice any sign of illness (change in sleep pattern, consistency or quantity of droppings, weight loss amounting to 10% or more of total weight, fluffed up feathers, droppings stuck to vent feathers, any change in behavior lasting more than a day, change in eating/drinking patterns, etc.) your bird needs to see a vet. It might be nothing big... or it might be something very serious.
This means if your bird is attacked by your dog, falls into a pond or a bag of carpet cleaner, or is covered in blood, your bird needs to see a vet even if she is still alive. You could easily mistake your bird for being fine, and wake up the next morning to find her dead due to unforseen complications.
Can't afford a vet? Most will work out payment plans. If you still can't afford a vet, you need to find a home for your bird with someone who can. Thats the plain and simple truth.
Joy had a vet checkup about a week ago, and the vet discovered an infection in a sore I wasn't even aware Joy had.
I consider myself to be a fairly capable pet owner: I did more than my share of research before I brought my baby home Still, Joy could have easily died from something I was completely unaware of untill the vet found it.
If you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the pet. Its that simple. I'm sorry to be harsh, but sometimes it needs to be said. I can't comprehend how people can take a defenseless animal into their home and then give it substandard care. I leave you with a poem:
|
A Cheap Bird's Plea by Joyce Glass |
What is it that my life is worth How much will you pay To what extent would you go If I get ill today?
I know I'm not an expensive bird My cost is fairly cheap But what is the price you put on life For something that you keep?
My wings still spread out the same My heart still has a beat So why is it that my cousins Are the ones you hold so sweet? |
|
I cannot help that I was born Without a golden egg Will you still take care of me Or make me plead and beg?
I rely on you to help me As I can't do it for myself Will you take the steps needed Or just put me on the shelf?
So when you walk by me Please look me in the eye If it would come down to it Would I live or die? |
