Some Sort of Memorial Event For Gary Gygax?
hey all,

I'm sure that everyone on this list  knows by now that Gary Gygax just passed away.  Some customers have expressed an interest in having some sort of memorial event. Looking at the store calendar, I see that this Saturday evening would be available, if people are interested in doing something.

Suggestions tendered so far have ranged from sung services to roleplaying.  I am open to suggestions!

Personally my favorite is:

Get Drunk and Play AD&D 1st edtion at a local bar?

I posted about this on the Filk community and will attempt to drag some of my musically talented LARPing friends.

Tyler, I don't suppose you could sell black dice in black bags for we gamers in morning?

It the event is early enough (as I cannot stay up too late) I will run a few encounters from Descent Into the Depths of the Earth, if folks think it would be appropriate.

Oh wow...that takes me back!

I wonder if I have a copy of 'Hidden Shine' around. A shortened version of that would also work very well.

I wouldn't mind hanging with some other gamers and commiserating in some way, even if it's just sharing favorite D&D memories or slinging dice. I think I've still got my AD&D 1st Edition books (heh...which I picked up used at Pandemonium back when it was still in the Garage, come to think of it) somewhere. I don't have anything earlier but I'm up for going back to OD&D if folks are willing to be patient with a whippersnapper who wasn't even around for '74.

I met Gary in person only once, though I did run into him online a few times. And though I didn't necessarily always agree with everything he did or said or his philosophy of game design, his enthusiasm was always infectious and the roleplaying community as a whole owes him and the other early designers a whole heck of a lot. 69 years wasn't nearly enough of a run. I wasn't even aware of his health problems, so this comes as quite a shock. I know we're probably going to be looking at memorializing Erick Wujick and other pioneering designers as well, soon...I knew we'd have to start saying goodbye to the old guard in earnest someday (some, of course, died far, far before their time). I just wasn't expecting that day to come down quite so soon or quite like this.

An evening dedicated to games he wrote would be fitting: original DnD modules at a minimum; maybe Lejendary. I'm not sure what else.

Chainmail from Tactical Studies Rules

I do remember obtaining a copy of Chainmail many moons ago and then trying out the first version of Dungeons and Dragons. The play depended very much on the skill and imagination of the dungeon master (at that point in the distant past, very few players were female).

I lost my copies of both Chainmail and the first D&D books, but I would be interested in participating in an old style game, if such could be organized.
