Hadley Rille Books will publish The Best of Abyss & Apex, safewrite, Wendy S. Delmater, ed. This book will be full of award-winning and award-nominated stories. This is going to be a fun project and I get to work closely with safewrite and saycestsay. The cover art will be provided by Monolithic Studios. Take a look at some of their work. It's fabulous. Plan is to publish the book in time for World Fantasy Convention. Cover design will be shown at Denvention3/Worldcon.
shsilver will be with me along with the National Space Society folks over at the NSS table at Worldcon where we'll announce the Return to Luna contest winners. Tentative time: Saturday, 4:00pm.
jaylake and I will co-edit the anthology Foorprints, to be published in 2009. Will post submission guidelines very soon, but for a preliminary look at the idea see Jay's LJ comment about the Apollo 17 landing site and comments that follow. The submission period will be from 1 August 2008 through 31 October 2008.
The publish timeframe for the Global Warming Aftermaths anthology is this autumn (N. Hemisphere). Finalizing that over the next few weeks.
The Archaeology Novel Series to be published next year by Hadley Rille Books starts to ramp up toward the end of this year. Each novel will be a fictional account of an ancient event of the author's choosing and field of expertise. (The authors for this series have academic and/or field experience in archaeology.) The books should appeal to a mainstream audience, but SF/F readers should also find them enjoyable and informative. Novelists will include Jenny Blackford, kltownsend, Ann Walters. Another is pending.

В рунете об этой картине, изображающей очень стильного представителя своей породы, не сказано ничего. Устраняю этот досадный пробел.
Персонаж на портрете. О нем известно мало.

| Tonight at work . . . |
[Jul. 16th, 2008|07:44 pm] |
(for those of you who don't know UMKC, it has the WEPT exam. Written English Proficiency Test, which must be passed for a student to enroll in a junior level writing class & to graduate. One week before the exam, students get a packet of articles about a controversial topic. In this case, the topic was about alcohol abuse among young adults. Possible topics people could write about might be colleges' responsibility to educate students about drinking, whether or not to lower the drinking age to 18 and so on. Students must reference at least 3 articles from their packet w/o plagiarizing. It's a pretty basic test of reading comprehension and critical thinking as well as basic writing. Students take it after their sophomore English class and it has between 85-90% pass rate. In short, it ain't that hard.)
. . . this dipshit comes in tonight to review his failed WEPT with me. I already know about him because he spent yesterday yelling at my mom (she's the WEPT coordinator) over the phone about how brilliant he is and how he's an awesome writer and the scorers must be stupid. He then called the writing center and yelled at the woman who helped him schedule an appointment. So, fellow had a reputation preceding him. The session ended with other students yelling at the guy to stop yelling at his tutor and campus police waiting outside the door to escort him away. Here's the write up (sans names) I had to do for my boss's official records. |

| О странностях систематики |
[Jul. 15th, 2008|04:22 am] |

| House Woes |
[Jul. 13th, 2008|11:01 pm] |
Since the house being listed, exactly one person has come through (at the open house on Saturday). She lost interest immediately upon finding out that it doesn't have central air. One other person has called about the house, but although he planned to come through the most recent open house, he never showed. The realtor plans to call him back tomorrow. The house is advertised and listed in pretty much every conceivable/practical place.
Really losing hope. It doesn't help to find out that Tim's aunt's neighbors' house has been listed for 2 months without a single showing--and they live in a trendier neighborhood than we do.
I need to be down there in a month. We can't afford to pay rent down there + the mortgage up here while we wait for a sale. I don't know what we're going to do. |

| It just never fucking stops. |
[Jul. 12th, 2008|09:13 pm] |
First, funny sound in the car on the way home from the theater tonight (oh, no, we didn't see a movie--it was sold out when we got there and nothing else playing around roughly the same time sounded interesting tonight). It's the brakepads, I believe, and my brother backed that up when he heard it after we got home.
When we got home, though, we also noticed that someone stole the cap on the air thing on the rear tire. Not only did they steal the cap, they let most of the fucking air out of the tire first. Grarrrrrrr. Fucking assholes. Who does that to a random car? Fucking punk ass kids. |

Just watched the re-run of A Very Supernatural Christmas. OMG *flail* I honestly think that is my favourite episode they have ever done. It was just perfect. And that parting shot of the boys and the car... *wipes tear*
Best EP Ever. |

| Lawrence |
[Jul. 10th, 2008|08:54 pm] |
I headed over to Lawrence today to sit in on the last hour of James Gunn's workshop figuring I'd hang around for a few minutes afterward and say hi to the workshoppers including mallory_blog, and then Mallory and I end up there in the lobby for almost three hours discussing everything from the Golden Age of science fiction to gender issues in SF and Fantasy to the scenic wonders of the West (Western United States) to critiquing stories, to talking about cars, or I should say: talking about talking about cars. It was a lot of fun and I really gained a lot from our discussion; she really knows this stuff.
It was nice seeing James Gunn and mckitterick (who was his usual bouncy self). jimvanpelt came in and we all had an enjoyable talk for a while there on the comfortable chairs and couches. |
