Home Again @ 02:34 pm

[info]jeweledvixen:

I told the doctors that things had been gradually getting worse for about a week, but I didn't realize that it had been much longer than that. I got home Wednesday after spending 5 nights in the hospital for breathing problems. Now that I'm feeling sooooo much better, I can see that all of this had been coming on for a couple of months. Little things that, by themselves, didn't seem that bad, but when added all together, made a huge difference. I also admit that I had gotten rather sloppy about taking care of myself - skipping meds, not sleeping properly, etc.

Now that I've had my wake-up call, I'm being a very good girl. When (if) these little things start piling up again, I'll know it's a warning sign and I'll be quicker to take care of them. I'm also starting a rehab program tomorrow. A cardiac exercise rehab program. I had my first session the Wednesday before I ended up in the hospital, but now I've missed 4 sessions, so it will be like starting all over. Hopefully this will build up my strength and stamina, and I'll be in much better shape than I am now. That's what I'm shooting for.

Until we move!

Sooooooo badly want to move, yet so tired of packing . . . good combo, eh? It's easier than the last move, and yet I just want it over. I was up at 4am, for some ungodly reason my mind wanted to be awake. So far, I'm just a little sleepy, though I expect a crash sometime today, heh.

Looking forward to having a space that's just ours again - our own laundry machines, our own water tank, our own yard, our own garage. No more 'fidgeting' over the water pressure, no more 5-8 cars parked all the way around the house, no more hearing them and knowing they hear us, blah, blah.

Wanting nothing with all your heart, stop the stream
When the world dissolves, everything becomes clear.
Go beyond this way or that way
To the farther shore where the world dissolves,
And everything becomes clear.
Beyond this shore and the farther shore,
Beyond the beyond,
Where there is no beginning, no end,
Without fear, go.

And today the tables were turned, or rather, the ladders were turned.

Today it was my turn to try and kill myself while putting the roof on, and I choose the old ladder as my weapon. That's right, I fell off the ladder. Or rather, the back of the ladder split and it toppled over. As it was going down I jumped off thinking the ground was close enough. It wasn't, and I took a nasty fall on my left ankle.

All is well fortunately. My ankle is a bit swollen and painful, but nothing too serious.

Roof is now done. Tomorrow, we start with the inside.

60 Years Ago Today . . . @ 10:36 am

[info]firedrake_mor:
Is upon me: contemplative

Johnnie James Davis and Doris Belle Blaydoe were united in marriage in Birmingham, Alabama.

Why the former beauty contest winner consented to marry a man of little means and plain looks has always escaped me, except that  . . . he was in the Navy, and could get her OUT of Birmingham, Alabama.

Had they lived, he'd be 84 and she would be 83.  Given that his grandmother lived to be 97 and his sister's still kickin' at 87 as of next month, he had a good chance, but like his father (dead at 46) and his father's father (dead at 47), his heart gave out on him at age 65.  Mind you his first heart attack was at 42.  They just had better treatment by then.

For all of that, my first (and I hope, only) heart attack was at age 43, and I worked through it, and didn't find out it was a heart attack till three months later.  When they did a complete cardiovascular scan last year (I was 53) for my back surgery, there was no evidence of blocking or narrowing anywhere, and only the bulge in my ascending aorta, which has been stable for four years.  Good times!

Mother left us in 1967, at age 42.  I found out earlier this year that she'd suspected there was something wrong since 1963, but didn't go to the doctor, because she didn't want to find out that there was something actually wrong.

They left me with their love of books and learning, for which I love them most of the time and curse them when I have to move.  He taught me to question assumptions and authority, then got P.O.'d when I questioned him.  I got my love of military history and shooting from him.   I got my interest in other cultures and travel from her, and my love of music (he listed to nothing but Country and Western, which I loathe to this day) from her.  She taught me to appreciate everything from Wagner to Sousa, Classics to Dixieland Jazz. I learned to cook in self-defense, because neither of them was very good at it.

Thanks, Mom and Dad,

I miss you.

Your result for The Mythological God Test...

Anubis

Indeed, you are 71% erudite, 63% sensual, 42% martial, and 67% saturnine.

Anubis was the Egyptian God of funerary rituals and the protector of the dead as well as the judge of souls and ruler of the underworld. Since it was his duty to weigh souls (along with the Goddess Maat) as a means of discovering the content of honesty, Anubis was also the God of truth.

He is usually seen as a man with the head of a jackal holding the divine sceptre carried by kings and Gods, but he can also be found on the walls of tombs as a black jackal or dog accompanying Isis. By no means an evil God, his domain of graves and tombs was nevertheless a frightening one, but then, one that offered the chance of an afterlife.

But why did the Egyptian God of the Dead have the head of a jackal? Well, jackals have the uncomfortable habit of lurking about tombs and graves, which was one of the reasons why the Egyptians sought to make their tombs more elaborate; to keep the bodies safe from the rather smart black canines. It is only natural therefore that a God of mummification would be connected with them. By worshipping Anubis, they hoped to invoke him to protect their deceased and assure their safe journey through the underworld, his domain.

The Path of enlightenment
Cannot be charted or measured:
Highest of the high,
Vast beyond limit,
Deepest of the deep,
Profound beyond fathoming,
Big enough to contain
Heaven and earth,
Small enough to enter
An infinitesimal point,
Thus it is called the Path.

Got this one from [info]kshandra while she was flipping through a songbook at the bar.

Go to musicoutfitters.com. Search on the year you graduated from high school and get the list of 100 most popular songs of that year, and:

* Bold the songs you like.
* Italicize the songs you liked then, but don't now.
* Strike through the ones you hate.
* Underline your favorites.
* Do nothing to the ones you don't remember or are neutral on.

I almost went with K~'s innovation of marking the ones I've sung at karaoke with an asterisk, but I can only remember doing one of these. I need to fix that.

I also get commenty at points. Some songs just ask for it.

Amazingly, I still like a lot of these. )

Painted the workshop @ 05:53 pm

[info]_graywolf_:
My dad nearly killed himself today whilst working on the roof. He tried to lay down and support himself on a beam... which wasn't secure. He slipped and fell with his hand into a metal sheathing and cut himself badly. Blood streamed down, and before we knew it the workshop was painted! All joking aside, I'm glad he got caught on something instead of falling to the ground.

Half the roof is up. Tomorrow we'll probably continue work. Enough done today.

[info]macsuibhne, Happy belated birthday.. and MANY congratulations on being the opening act for the Chieftains concert this sunday in Marymoor, Seattle. If anyone is close, GO SEE THEM! (The Chieftain's aren't bad either ;) )
