No, don't be scared, this is not your Give me more comments plz post. I am well aware that I get a lot of comments, and I appreciate that very much <3
This is more of a general observation, or me rambling about some things I thought lately when I look at my icons filter.
I've noticed a decreasing number of comments on icon posts. I watch all kinds of communities and icon makers, big and well-known, smaller and not-so-known. They all get less comments than I saw a few months ago.
I know it's summer and people are busy, but I can't shake the feeling that people are generally giving less feedback.
The thing is, the icon community thrives on feedback and communication (just as fanfic).
People watch icon makers for a reason, right? Either for icons, or for inspiration. I think it's only fair to give something back for that, and a small comment will make every icon maker's day.
Credit is one thing, and it should be given if the maker asks for it. But...
The only way for an icon maker, or at least for me, to know whether people like their work is by feedback. If you take icons without leaving feedback or a comment, even when you credit, the icon maker won't know their work is appreciated, because who can look at 354,664,477 people's userpics and check if someone uses them.
Less feedback may result in the icon maker thinking that nobody cares anyway, and eventually they will stop posting. They may not stop iconing, because that should primarily be done for your own enjoyment, but they will stop sharing, which would also be your loss.
So, the way is communication.
I must admit I'm irritated when I see people rec icon posts, and I when I go there, I see that the person who recommended the post didn't even comment. Granted, maybe they told them otherwise, but it's happened to me as well, more than once, from people who never commented here.
The same goes for people nominating icons without telling the maker.
What I'm trying to say is, if you like somebody's work, go and tell them. Tell them, because they are the person who should know in the first place.
And don't tell only the people on your personal flist, but also the people you watch because of their talent, or whose icons you see and like because someone pointed them out.
It doesn't have to be a huge song of praise, a simple these are pretty or I like them will be more than enough for most. It also doesn't have to be at every post, but once in a while would be nice.
That being said, I'd like to try my hand at a monthly rec post (like
spuzz at
morbid_girls), where I will point out icon posts that caught my eye. I hope you'll find some inspiration there.
