I hate this "impotent" or "sexless" or "banished from Christine's bedroom" Raoul theme, because what it boils down to is that Raoul - by having sex with his wife - is somehow Profaning the Sacred Vessel Worthy Only to Carry Erik's Very Special Sperm.

themarisa: I found this article today where DRad compared the new Harry Potter film to Trainspotting. Yes, that Trainspotting. He says there is much "sexual energy and drug parallels." To which I have to reply, did the moviemakers and I read the same book? I can see the sexual energy but the drugs? Does Harry have a secret meth addiction? Should they call the film Harry Potter and the Valley of the Dolls? I always felt Draco probably did Coke but that is because I read entirely too much fan fiction.

Fraser's obliviousness to women actually beats Sheppard's. I honestly believe that if they were the last two people on earth and were both given sex pollen causing uncontrollable lust and locked in a small, comfortable room with two beds, they would still somehow not have sex on the strength of sheer obliviousness. That's--that's impressive.

They might not even get off. They'd worry it wasn't polite. Well, Fraser would. Sheppard would contemplate having to bare skin in front of other human beings and find this deeply traumatic or something.

Or in this case: the great race debate rears it's ugly dreads. SGA fandom is all a-twitter about Jason Momoa cutting his dreads and the SciFi channel not letting his character lose them. The talk is whether or not the dreads make him look alien, dangerous, what-have-you. purna has a different idea.

I think my next alien character will be a middle aged white guy with thinning hair. Because combover is just bad-assed and scary, man.

And on a more disturbing note: so this show is set in a future where China has become the ascendant power/culture, right? So how come I have seen seven episodes of this show, and there are NO ACTUAL CHINESE PEOPLE? Or Asians of ANY nationality? It's bad enough that none of them are on the crew, but there haven't even been any minor characters. Just white people dressed up Chinese-style and talking Chinese. Unless there's a future episode where we learn that all the Chinese people stayed on Earth and kicked all the white people off, which is why space is so damned full of WHITE PEOPLE?!?!?!

4) This movie didn't make me feel fannish at all, it made me feel really fucking awful I don't know more about what's going on in Afghanistan right now. I came out of the film wanting to read up on Afghanistan instead of reading Iron Man fanfic. Which is a real compliment to Jon Favreau, I think. Well done filmmakers. You made me want to donate to the Red Cross AND fuck your lead actor.

I always imagine shipping wars like this massive field battle, in which everyone is fighting everyone else. You've got the Buffy/Angel batalion on one side, trying to axe-murder the Buffy/Spike squad; then there are the Remus/Sirius forces, forcefully trying to push the Remus/Tonks shippers off a cliff; the Harry/Hermione are busy bludgeoning the Harry/Ginny division to death with shovels and frying pans; all the while the House/Cuddy corps is throwing molotov coctails in the ranks of the House/Wilson platoon.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, sitting comfy on a thick tartan rug, are the Willow/Oz and Willow/Tara shippers, having tea and cookies and exchanging suggestions on how to bake the best chocolate cake.

(Of course, at some point the Willow/Kennedy shippers arrive and as ask if they may join, to which we stare at them for a while before kindly telling them no. We don't have enough tea anyways.)

How did the Cylons learn that song? It wasn't on the Voyager record-- that was Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode". Unless the Cylons have somehow been to Earth, either in the past (ie, our time) or in the present (ie, Galactica's time) the only thing I can figure is that it means Bob Dylan is the original Hybrid.

Regarding fandoms with multiple strong pairings:

I think LOTRPS there were (are) several very popular pairings all going on at the same time. That said, there have definitely been fads; I came into the fandom when Billy/Dom was really rolling strong, having succeeded Dom/Elijah as the primary hobbit pairing. That said, there was still plenty of Dom/Elijah being written.

That whole paragraph is just weird. The phrase "primary hobbit pairing" is really weird. And yet, I love it.
