Shelves question

Sorry for a text-only post, but I was wondering if any of you decorating mavens might might be able to help me. I was thinking about buying some cube shelves (like these), but installing them makes me nervous. Is drilling required? How difficult is it to actually hang the shelves?

Blue; Purple; Black

So I am thinking about re-painting our bedroom (my boyfriend and I) because the purple I chose before he lived here I think is driving him crazy.

We are always miserable so maybe purple is a mood killing color? Yellow would help but I think I'd murder my walls first =/ its not one of my favorite colors. I want to make the room less girly, but still have some color I enjoy, but make it subtle so like I said; it won't look girly.

I have mostly purple stuff (chair, pen/stuff holders, bulletin board, towels, trash can). My furniture is mostly lighter wood colors and black and a few white things and a few dark purple things.

Was thinking that for walls, solid black for molding/around windows, and I might do a silvery shade for 2/4 walls as well.

Hey everyone, My name is Lauren and I'm eighteen.
I posted probably two weeks ago with my mess of a bedroom here, and I wanted to update you because it's finished!

A close up..that red and yellow dolphin is Italy, and the Black Coral dolphin is from Grand Cayman (although you can really get them anywhere in the Caribbean..)

Need help/ideas!

Hi, my name's Alexis, and I'm a first time poster here.

My next door neighbor offered to let me move into one of her guest bedrooms, which I gladly accepted, as I've overflown the bedroom I'm currently living in. I've decided to turn it into a studio/second bedroom, and want to keep it fairly minimalist.

The room is brown and furnished with antiques. She's allowed me complete freedom to change it up, but for now I've decided to stick with what's in there.
So, I've come here to ask you for any tips/ideas. Mainly, I need a color scheme. I've planned on gold and white accents, but need a main color to tie the room together.

My current bedroom is pink with black furniture and silver accents (which I will post once it's not in total disarray), so my goal is to turn this room into the complete opposite.

So far, I've only moved in a few books, a radio, and a CD rack. The rest is totally up in the air. Please help, because I'm totally indecisive!

I love the desk (which is a bit hard to see) but would like to put some new knobs on the drawers. I love Anthropolgie's selection, but I can't decide on what would look best.

The cabinet on the dresser is filled with vintage medical supplies (my neighbor is a nurse) and I would love to sprinkle that idea through the rest of the room (though in a non-flashy way).
The pictures are up to keep the room from looking too bare, but I plan on changing them out soon.

I'm on the hunt for the perfect comforter/quilt. I like the sheets she has on the bed, and wouldn't mind sticking in the blue/green/turquoise range.

Those are both closet doors. They take up the majority of the wall, so any ideas to make them look less bland would be greatly appreciated.

The nightstand that my neighbor is in love with, though she desperately wants to paint the drawers. I agree, as it looks kind of out of place in the room.

when i go home to stay at my parent's house (they live in a different state to me) i love going back to sleep in my old room - because i can be all girly and it's purple! it's totally different to my house and my bedroom that i share with my husband...

...there's just something about your room at your parent's house that makes it so homely...

my parents have a two storey house and i don't have to worry about people looking in the windows, so i can have the curtains open all day.

i don't ever watch that t.v. - i'm not sure why it's there. the chair is for the outdoor setting, my mum only takes it outside when she needs it. i'm slack & still have not gotten round to hanging any of the pictures up on the wall.

the walk in robe doesn't have a door, so i put in a shower-rod rail and hung some fine chiffon curtains up to hide the mess. the chest of drawers used to belong to my grandfather.

the bookcase was inherited again from my grandfather. the chest of drawers i bought for $45 second hand - they were painted an awful green colour with the most hideous handles. i stripped it back and waxed it & bought new handles. i love it. a lot of the old books were also inherited from my grandparents - they stink but i really like them.

these pictures are taken from the "landing" which is outside the room at my parent's house. it's also my area to just hang out in. there are two couches so i can just read a book and take some time away from the folks when i need to!

one of my best friends made me the coffee table - i'd seen one i really liked in a retro furniture store and they wanted a packet for it..so he surprised me by making me one. the legs unscrew off for easy moving.

I'm moving soon, actually, we're getting a new house built and they're starting next week, and I want to really start to get myself organized/limit myself and not have a bunch of things scattered everywhere. I want it fairly simple. So I have five small requests!

a) Could you please post how you have your closet organized?
b) How your organize your makeup/beauty products?
c) How you organize your jewelry?
d) How you store photo's, ticket stubs, etc?
e) And how you hang your posters up? And how you organize your stuffed animals.

I'm sorry it's a lot,
I'm just SO unorganized, and need some idea's!

I'd appreciate it SO SO much.
I'm so desperate, I want to write things down now, so when I get them done, then I can cross them out, or put a check mark beside them.

hello, i'm a first timer here and i'm really excited because i've been reading this community for years. my name is sam, 19 & male (but still into the whole decorating thing, i also work in retail so i'm kind of surrounded by the stuff all the time). i'm a sophomore at rockhurst university in kansas city, studying education/writing, & this is my bedroom at my parent's house. most of the time i live in a crappy dorm, but this is will always be my home :)

i took this with a manual camera, i was feeling artsy. this is my morning light.

bed. all of my stuff is from where i work, jcpenney, haha. i get a pretty sweet discount there.

my bed actually made.

from one of the entrance doors. it's actually quite small, i use every centimeter of space i have. the chinese lantern string lights are from the world market. that place has lot of my money.

my "zen" candle/bookshelf corner. that bookshelf took about 4 hours to put together, haha. i'm sure you all know how that is.

closer-up. my laptop on the floor i have no where to put. and a picture of me and my boyfriend, but i should probably take that down since we're probably breaking up soon haha. yikes.

la computadora. books, bills, journals, and what have you.

the pictures on my wall of my friends and i do not consist of any soberiety.

yuckkk i hate this closet area, i don't know what to do with it. i've thought about taking off the doors and just hanging like beaded curtains over it, but i was worried that would look trashy hahaha. if anyone else disagrees let me know. but yes, i have a thing for jennifer connelly (she's a great actress) and the goggles are from my random middle of the new swim sessions at 24 hour fitness. haha.

I've never seen anyone do this- but I was wonering if it was a good idea to move my bed into my closet instead of it having it take up space in my room. I want to work on my room to give it more of a lounge-y feeling and make it more mature looking. I realize I'd have to get some kind of nice looking outer storage for my clothes that I would be replacing. My closet is big- it can fit a full size bed with the frame. Any suggestions or comments? Pictures of my room will come soon, I just need to replace the cord for my camera. (:

Alright, so I just moved back home and my room suddenly feels very young to me, so I'm sort of redoing it, and I've got a few problem spots.

First there's my curtains. I've got these up now, but I'm really sick of them, not to mention something once possessed me to cut the hems so the bottoms are all frayed. o_O

(Ugh those candles haha I can't wait till they're gone.)

But then my carpet is this color:

Except slightly more greeny-yellow.

And my duvet is this:

Neither of which I have the option of changing. So what curtains would you suggest? Or at least what color?

And second, I have this wall around my closet doors that I never know what to do with.

It's 12" all around, and I used to have LPs hanging but I'd rather keep them in good shape on my shelf than have them hanging on my walls tbh. And I can't afford those LP frames unfortunately. Suggestions?

my room project is a big mess. i've put aside the shadow box things, but thanks to the ones who game me ideas, i know what to do now :)

i'm trying to get the room clean and neat before my gf comes home from a long tour, but due to lack of money... i have to use what i got to organize... that includes a couple of small tin boxes and a few cardoboard boxes.

because we live with her mom, and there's one bathroom for 5 people, with one person who doesn't respect other peoples property... we've had to move all our bathroom necessities into the bedroom.

right now the cleaning products are badly shoved into the closet with the rest of the mess:

if there IS any room in there! we have no storage space for fear of getting our things accidentally sold in garage sales.. so we keep most of our things in the closet.....

then we keep our hair products and deoderants and stuff like that on our vanity mirror which is this small tiny thing that's antique and beautiful, but the products make it look trashy...

where oh where would be an organized place to keep these eyesores?!

help me before i go crazy!

Hey, I'm Sydnee. I'm 17 and I hail from Fort Worth Texas. A lot of the stuff in my bedroom is thrifted, and/or bird oriented.
Sorry in advanced for crappy picture quality, I'm still trying to figure out my camera.

The color I painted my room is called "really teal." and it is /really/ teal.

I went to see Tori Amos in concert last year. I prefer her older stuff, but it was still amazing.

I went searching for a post, but can't find it for the life of me. I went back about 400 entries and figured I'd just ask :P Anyhoo, I'm looking for a room that had hardwood floors, brown bedding with I think a pink blanket on it and a stuffed giraffe on the floor. Although she had a really nice room, she had an amazing DVD collection that I'm jealous of. In the comments of the post, she gave tips on how to find cheap DVDs and such. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I also really liked the bookcase she had her DVDs organized in. Thanks for any help!!

Lately I've been craving a simpler look to my room maintaining the same classic victorian/renaissance theme I had going. I've had this brown comforter set that I bought at target, but I never used it since I had a black canopy up at the time I bought it. I pulled it out and placed it on my bed and right now it looks perfectly. Tonight I bought some new sheets and curtains to match better and it looks perfect!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay!

Nearly completed. I want to get a hold of some warm blue curtains that aren't too heavy or sheer and a new lamp base... maybe a tray for the end table too.

yes, that is married with children on tv! The episode where Steve returns after leaving Marcy and Al is in a panic with taxes wanting to hang himself. lol. crazy stuff.

I found this statue at hobby lobby for 10 bucks.

This is where I spend most of my time... I need a new desk. And that is all!

hello my names brittany, i'm 19 and i just moved out of my parents house and moved in with my cousin and his fiancee. i sort of went from one basement to another but this room is so much better then the one i had before. enjoy :]

a tinsy bit of pictures so dial-up users beware.

so when you walk into my room and look towards your left you will see a small plastic container with just a bunch of random junk inside. also pictures of billie piper and jared padalecki and jensen ackles.

then my closet, which i won't show you the inside because it looks like a tsunami hit it. and then my cd's are in that black cabinent (yes i still buy cd's). and my hamster mark (who is named after mark hoppus from blink 182/+44). also you will note my superbad poster which i nicked from the movie theatre my friend works at. they throw all that stuff away, so i couldn't help myself.

then on the other wall some more posters. i'm a huge comic book/batman nerd, have been since i was a tinsy tot. up on the windows is the entertainment weekly magazine with batman and my two mcfly viynls. i am also a huge buffy/joss whedon, doctor who/torchwood, and simon pegg fan.

that's my tv, and my old school surround sound system (it's one of the first systems to come out), and my dvd player which doesn't play my 'l word' season two dvd's because it hates it so i have to go upstairs to watch them. ah yes and shaun of the dead and some mcfly posters.

this is my books/dvds shelves that i made from wood and blocks. i'm poor so i can't really afford ikea, plus shipping and handling for that place is a bitch.

on the top shelf of my bookcase i have my some of my many collectables. i almost have the whole series 1 heroes set, i'm still missing claire, flying peter and time changing hiro. and then onto all my books. now, i told you i was a huge btvs/joss fan.

some more books, and now my dvd collection.

my VERY comfortable chair, and some pictures of david tennant.

that's my cat cody, i have a weiner dog named charles gunn (named after well, charles gunn from angel), but he's currently in the animal hospital undergoing eye surgery, so no picture. i was also watching some of the 'catherine tate show' on dvd, so that's why it's sitting there.

my kitchen area, and above my table. you will notice i have two buffy games. one i have still wrapped and on a shelf as a collectable and the other i have to play on buffy night with my friends.

that's my heater. and the reason why most of my stuff is on bricks is because i have this fear of certain stuff touching the floor. it's weird i know, but i've had it all my life.

some posters and my AWESOME bed. i actually have this batman sheet set, a doctor who sheet set (the daleks and cybermen one), a buffy sheet set and an angel sheet set. i switch off every couple of months.

and the BEST poster ever, from one of the best shows on televison! watching this show makes me feel like i'm not alone. plus i have a crush on mr. a-sexual sheldon!

more collectables. the first to shelves are my buffy/angel collectables. tv guides, magazines, etc... and yes that is a popcorn container from when i saw spiderman 3 last year.

the last couple of shelves have my trading card boxes, my sfx magazines, my doctor who & torchwood magazines, cult times & tv zone magazines, sci-fi magaine and my buffy/angel comics, and my batman, superman, green lantern, fantastic four, etc... comics. i have way more comics under my bed in plastic containers. those are mostly the justice league, spiderman, teen titans, etc...

under my shelves. these hold the curent book i am readying (torchwood - another life), my buffy/angel magazines, my heroes magazines, csi magazines, alias magazines, 24 magazines, my trading cards and diary.

my last window sill. it holds vinyl read along gremlins books i got when i was a tot, heroes comic, buffy magazine, and the set list to when i saw angels and airwaves. oh and that's my ood, i named him harry.

below my window sill is more collectables. my angel action figures, my jensen ackles signed auto (which really isn't signed, i think it's a stamp), my +44 cd's and a signed picture of them when i met them, umm more signed stuff. my smg shelf. i have every magazine cover she's ever been on (more are under my bed). and some dolls.

and finally my mcfly calendar and my dark angel pic.

Show me your "libraries"/bookshelves. I'm a bibliophile and I love seeing how other people store their books. I'd share mine, but I'm in a dorm right now so my books are shoved in a plastic container under my bed.

It's been about seven months since I last shared and I've changed a few things around in my bedroom. Please, enjoy my endeavours!

The jewelry hangs from pushpins; I covered cork board with batting and an adorable cotton print with a staple gun. Most of the trinkets on my dresser were gifts, found locally, or have been in my family for several years.

The silver picture frame containing my beloved Mao was found at Paperchase in England, and I decorated the round box on the left. The paper petal box and the dried flower bouquet were discovered in a local flower shoppe, and you can see a little bit of my lamp that was spray-painted blue.

Introducing my newest addition to a long line of feline companions: Sobe. The smaller pillows on my bed were gifts, two sewn by my friend and my mother, and one one that transforms into a terrifying wake-up call.

My dresser was found at a local garage sale for $10. What a steal! Luckily I love my white walls (they reflect so much light), because I cannot be convinced to paint them or my closet doors, lest I be forced to repaint them white when I leave this apartment.

The antique map tapestry was a Christmas gift from a friend, and my desk was given to me by a coworker. My shelf used to be black (painted it from blue), and it recently became a peachy-white. I also covered my lamps with wallpaper samples, and painted the picture frame that is hanging on the wall. I have big plans for the birdcage on the floor, which I found at a local Salvation Army.

The shelving unit hanging from the wall was once a wooden tea shelf, and the smaller white shelves were found in my mother's cellar.

My friend made me that pillow. ♥
