Community information! FAQ V1.0
Thank you for waiting patiently. Your mods have worked up a rough draft of your community FAQ. It has already been posted to the userinfo. For your convenience (to make it extra easy for everyone to read *G*) we thought we'd post it here.

0. This FAQ is still a work in progress. We're just getting off the ground, so it will be a learning process for everyone. Expect at least one major FAQ revision as time goes on. We will, of course, notify the community at large when a major change (or a culmination of smaller changes) is made. We're already 400 watchers strong and that's before we've even started.

1. Posting ability - We're hoping to keep this as open and friendly as possible, so for now we're not going to change any of the posting options. However, your friendly neighborhood mods have discussed contingencies if it becomes evident that this community doesn't lend itself to the current setup.

2. Keeping it on topic - We're hoping to get a list of tags and a compilation of links to the current discussions up as soon as possible. If your topic isn't covered easily in the tags or is possibly already covered in one of the current conversations, but you just can't decide if making a new post would be on or off topic, please contact us.

We're going to try and avoid duplication, but it might take a few days to get everything under control, please be patient while we hammer out the dents.

3. Contacting us - fandomarchive@gmail.com will reach all of your mods. Please don't hesitate to use it.

4. I don't have an LJ! - We are very aware that Livejournal doesn't equal all of fandom and that more than just Livejournal users might want to step into the conversations and offer constructive comments right along side everyone else. For now, anonymous commenting is allowed. What we ask is that you sign a name, any name. Just keep it consistent. Having watched many conversations that include anonymous comments, we can tell you how easy it is to get two confused and how much trouble that can cause.

Information about open ID TBA. (http://openid.net/)

5. My, it's getting hot in here - Flaming. Probably the biggest worry of any new community or moderator. Let's make it simple. No flames allowed. For now we won't implement a zero tolerance policy because conversations can get a little emotional and things can be said in the heat of the moment. That being said, expect the typical requests for decorum, freezing of volatile threads that have gone way off topic/into the bad place, requests for deletion or deleting outright without waiting for the poster themselves.

If you have a problem with an action any mod takes, take it 'off list'. Email the mods, do not make new posts or post about it in comments to other posts.

6. Tagging guidelines - TBA

7. Summary posts - TBA

As you can see, a few items will fill in with time and some of the language will probably smooth out as we go on. Most of the activity won't start until we get the proper summation post and [info]astolat closes her post to comments (i.e. shunts the conversation over to here) so we've got a bit of leeway.

And finally, to borrow someone else's format:

JOB:
1. Notes: Long term, moderate effort. Can be expanded to add another person. Weekly Summation Posts. [info]ainsely and [info]wordplay!
Once a week, create a post that re-links to all of the conversations that took place within that seven day period. The nature of livejournal is very 'top page' so we want to give each topic a second chance at the top of a friends list. Mostly we need someone willing to compile links into a relatively neat looking post. These summation posts will have their own tag for easy reference.

Not taking too many jobs. Currently unemployed, and one's a one-off.

Having a back-up would be great, in case I end up internetless one week or something.

(I'm not sure if you haven't yet had time to write this up, don't think it's relevant, or didn't know, so I figured it was better to just commment.)

Not sure if this is the kind of information you're looking for in the OpenID section, but many people who don't have LiveJournals are probably unaware that they might already have an OpenID identity.

For example, if you've ever registered with TypeKey to comment on a blog run by TypePad or Movable Type, then you've got an OpenID account. Your identity URL is profile.typekey.com/username

If you use AOL or chat with AIM, then you've got an OpenID account. Your identity URL is openid.aol.com/screenname

Ditto if you have an account at a LiveJournal clone like GreatestJournal. Your identity URL is in the form exampleusername.greatestjournal.com. Note that sites that use code from more than two years ago, such as JournalFen do not have OpenID support.

I think I mentioned in the original thread but it might have been buried, that while using an OpenID account to make comments authenticates you (that is, if you make two comments, it's been confirmed that they were both made by you) your comments are still treated as anonymous comments (that is, if anonymous comments are turned off or screened, then OpenID comments are too.)

The truth is we haven't had a chance to write it up AND *I* (the one who wrote a majority of the first draft of the FAQ) don't know a lot about it. So this is very useful, thank you! At least some of this will make it into v2.0.

No problem. This is actually one of the areas that I want to push for early integration when we start talking site development, so I'm happy to ramble.

Ooh, I don't think there's much fandom at Wordpress.com, but if so, users have OpenID identities in the form username.wordpress.com

To clarify further for anyone reading, if you sign into LiveJournal with an OpenID identity, you can make comments anywhere that anonymous comments are allowed, and if you're added to a friend/member list, you could be given permission to read locked posts. I very much recommend registering for an actual account because the OpenID accounts don't have nearly the number of features, but if you're only here to make a couple comments then OpenID comments are a great way to identify yourself without registering.

Fanarchive FAQ - Policy on moderator abuse
[info]taverymate
2007-05-25 08:21 pm UTC (link)
I know that the FAQ is a WIP, but there's a subsection to #5 that makes me uneasy as it currently worded.

If you have a problem with an action any mod takes, take it 'off list'. Email the mods, do not make new posts or post about it in comments to other posts.

I fully appreciate that you don't want a particular thread or post or (worst case) the entire community taken over by a dispute between a commenter and a mod.

At the same time, I've seen this rule (quoted above) used deliberately and not infrequently by mods in mailing lists and LJ communities to quell discussion about serious issues, especially those connected to how the forum functions and abuse by moderators.

I think that this community - with its emphasis on transparency and responsiveness to fen concerns around the formation of an archive - needs not only to practice what it preaches, but to be SEEN doing so in the organizational forums. That means taking proactive steps to ensure that folks are not ignored, unreasonably silenced, or shoved from view when protesting. Having safeguards - and publicizing them - means that those who want to create a stir for the hell of it (drama queens and trolls) are stymied, but those who are airing legitimate concerns are free to do so.

I would suggest that the LJ community make it clear that there is an official process involving multiple moderators to follow up on claims of bad moderator decisions and moderator abuse. Post the policy IN DETAIL. That way, if someone has a problem with a moderator's decision or with a moderator's overall performance, they will have confidence that it is not a "me, lone person, helpless against the unilateral, arbitrary decisions of a mad moderator" situation.

Make it clear that someone complaining about a moderator's decision or moderator abuse can directly communicate with others in authority and will not be stonewalled by the moderator in question.

After a complaint about a moderator's decision or overall behavior, make a single community ADMIN post noting that the oversight committee/group has received the complaint and is attending to it. Avoid vagueness: list the actual complaint, not just handwave about the particulars because vagueness will only encourage gossip and paranoia.

Update the post when a decision is reached: moderator's decision stands or changes made, and the current policy stance on the issue raised. If the moderator's performance is substandard, what changes are being requested, how will they be monitored, or will the moderator be replaced?

It might sound like unnecessary extra work when the LJ comm is already trying to delegate tasks and spread out the workload and the thought of another committee is enough to make you cringe. *g*

But honestly, having a structure and policy in place to deal with moderator problems is going to save so much grief and frustration that is well worth the effort. And having an oversight committee and policy in place BEFORE there is a problem is essential. There will be problems, it is inevitable, especially given the proposed scope of the archive project and the number of moderators and community members and commenters involved..

*nods* No, you caught one of the places we seriously wanted a little more clarity. There's a good reason I posted v1.0. I didn't specifically invite comments, I know. But I totally welcome them.

Hmm, I think I had assumed some of the things you pointed out as things I should add. I don't disagree at all. I had to pull back my own feelings about dealing with flames and the like, but hmm-- yes, I'll look into pointing out that the email address goes to three different people and possibly into ways of making sure it doesn't look like anything is being brushed under the carpet. *ponders*

Oh and I wanted to say thank you for understanding why we said 'off list'. Mostly it was to avoid the otherside. A post, put up in anger, causing massive wank.

Ummm. It just occurred to me that some people might be wandering in or passing by at a rather late point.
So maybe something from/a link to the summary from the original post?

A lot of people have been asking me how this project will be different from any other archive.
Maybe not CommFAQ worthy. But I think it should be featured on the profile page and/or the link section in the layout?

on that note (trigger happy index finger here):
there's also the option to link to a post in the navbar up top.
(might also be a good idea to link to the most recent summary posts from there. I have a feeling they could quickly be drowned out)

Which brings me to the next point - is layout all done?
i.e. do I need to be fiddeling with any more links and so on? I'd be happy to maintain them, by the way.
This isn't a am I done already? issue so much as I still kind of have mod priviledges 'cause it's easier to make changes that way issue.
