| Ottawa SF Society May meeting |
[May. 17th, 2008|02:20 pm] |
Authors, in an attempt to create a totally different society, often use the sexual practices of their characters as a ploy to emphasize difference (and also to sell lots of books). Discussion and presentation by members. Come tell us about the most bizarre arrangement you have seen in SF! Human societies with only one sex. Genetically-engineered human hermaphrodites. Aliens who do everything in threes...
The May meeting of the Ottawa Science Fiction Society will feature a discussion on the subject of "Bizarre sexuality in SF". Club members will give presentations, and there will be general discussion.
The meeting will be on Sunday, May 25th, at 2 p.m., at the Dalhousie Community Centre at 755 Somerset St. West.
For more information please call 727-6379 or see our website at http://osfs.ncf.ca . Members of the public are welcome to attend without charge.

| Ottawa SF Society April meeting |
[Apr. 20th, 2008|02:45 pm] |
In 1973, Arthur C. Clarke wrote his Third Law: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Later, others have proposed variations on the theme: "Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology", "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from a rigged demo", and many others.
Many science fiction stories have involved people dealing with technology so far in advance of their own that it appears to work by magic. And many fantasy stories have involved "magic" that functions by well-defined rules that are, in essence, the laws of physics of those worlds. Some SF characters have intentionally used advanced tech to create the appearance of magic -- comic book character Abra Kadabra and Babylon 5's Technomages, for example.
The April meeting of the Ottawa Science Fiction Society will feature a discussion on the subject of "Any Sufficiently Advanced..." -- exploring the boundaries between technology and magic, and when one is used to simulate the other. Club members will give presentations, and there will be general discussion.
The meeting will be on Sunday, April 27th, at 2 p.m., at the Dalhousie Community Centre at 755 Somerset St. West.
For more information please call 727-6379 or see our website at http://osfs.ncf.ca . Members of the public are welcome to attend without charge.

| Comics: looking to lighten my load... |
[Apr. 6th, 2008|09:23 am] |
...of mid-'80s comic books that I can't freecycle, or full-circle, or <whatever we want to call just giving the bloody things away, these days> because they do go beyond the "appropriate for all ages" restriction on goods eligible for offer through FullCirclesOttawa.
Situation is, that over the last few months I've been reworking my decades-dormant comics collection. Mostly paring it down to "finished" state, to the books I still enjoy and see going forward with for the long term. I was actually able to unload most of those that needed to go, through the FullCircles site (to a high-school comic collecting club in one of the small towns near Ottawa) then re-evaluated a few things in favour of their staying--but at the end of the day, I'm still sitting here looking at roughly a 3-inch stack of bright, clean, near-mint comics which, erm, nope, I can't unload 'em that way. There isn't much in the pile that I'd call particularly edgy or out-there, but where they aren't explicitly marked "Mature Readers", it's only because they somewhat pre-date that rating.
I've already explored the more obvious ways of unloading the pile--eBay, opportunities available through comic dealers and collecting sites online--and concluded that none stand any real chance of repaying the cost to me, in terms of time, effort, hassle, or even just the cash outlay involved, to pursue them. Near-mint or not, the books involved just aren't that valuable. But for everything that went into them, they mostly do rate better than going to the curb in the black box.
So what I'd like to know, is whether any passing collector(s) in this area might be interested in them? These books are strictly to.give.away. I can deliver, if they can be delivered anywhere OCTranspo runs regularly outside of rush hours--or if that doesn't work, we can look at other options.
Here's what has to go:
Howard Chaykin's American Flagg, #33, 34, 36-50, and Special #1 (First Comics, mid '80s) Howard Chaykin's American Flagg, #1 and 2 of the alternate title with "American" rendered in either real or faux Cyrillic (I've never known which) (First Comics, later '80s) Death Rattle #6-9 (Kitchen Sink Comix, 1986) Electra Assassin #4-6 of 8-issue limited series (Epic Comics, 1986) Blackhawk #2, 13-15, not Chaykin, these were Pasko/Burchett/Moench (DC, 1989)
Thanks for giving this a look,
DJW

| Ottawa SF Society March meeting |
[Mar. 26th, 2008|08:55 pm] |
The March meeting of the Ottawa Science Fiction Society will feature a discussion on the subject of "Robots" -- now and for the future. Will Asimov prevail or will Terminator? Will the robots we create treat us as parents or as enemies? Come to think of it, a lot of parents aren't always sure if they are friends or enemies of their own human progeny...
Club members will give presentations, and there will be general discussion.
The meeting will be on Sunday, March 30th, at 2 p.m., at the Dalhousie Community Centre at 755 Somerset St. West.
For more information please call 727-6379 or see our website at http://osfs.ncf.ca . Members of the public are welcome to attend without charge.

| Ottawa SF Society February meeting |
[Feb. 18th, 2008|12:10 pm] |
The February meeting of the Ottawa Science Fiction Society will feature a discussion on the subject of "Time Travel" -- good stories and anomalies. Is it even possible? Will we ever journey to the beginning of time and space (the big bang) or the eras of the dinosaurs, or witness the birth of Christ or the death of JFK? What about the paradoxes? -- going back in time to kill your own grandfather, to use the classic example, not to mention going back to become your own grandfather.
Club members will give presentations, and there will be general discussion.
The meeting will be on Sunday, February 24th, at 2 p.m., at the Dalhousie Community Centre at 755 Somerset St. West.
For more information please call 727-6379 or see our website at http://osfs.ncf.ca . Members of the public are welcome to attend without charge.

| COMIC BOOKS: Local Hero Update - 23 January 2008 |
[Jan. 23rd, 2008|03:32 pm] |
I have more good news: another retailer has joined the Local Hero network today.
Myths, Legends and Heroes, owned and operated by Rob Zedic in Ottawa's Vanier District, has signed onto the network as of this afternoon. Contact details for his store are on the website on the other end of the link.
If you buy it there, and you like what you see, tell both of us. If you don't like it, tell Ian and myself! |

| COMIC BOOKS: Local Hero: Progress Report - Mid-Jan. 2008 |
[Jan. 17th, 2008|09:06 am] |
Hoping no one minds if I do a little self-promotion here?
Two more stores are now part of the Local Hero network as of this week, carrying copies of the police drama/super-hero series created by Ian Gould and myself:
First we have Mags and Fags, a news-stand/tobacco shop in Centretown. They're stocking LH in the mature-readers' comics and prose SF section of the store. Kudos to co-owners Charlene and Christa Blaszczyk and David Morgan-Kirby for their support!
Second up is Entertainment Ink's flagship store at Place d'Orléans Mall in central Orléans, right across the hall from the ScotiaBank entrance. Many thanks also to Murray Sudletsky and his staff for their support!
E-mail addresses for each as follows, if you want to contact them to confirm availability of stock:
Mags and Fags: magsandfags@magma.ca
Entertainment Ink: entertainmentink@bellnet.ca
Both, of course, are also in the Ottawa phone book as well as being listed on Canada411.ca. |
