[music |SLEEPCHAMBER - Psychosexual (demo)]

This joke about Dachau concentration camp, opened in 1933, shows people knew early on they could be imprisoned on a whim for expressing an opinion:

Two men meet. “Nice to see you’re free again. How was the concentration camp?”
“Great! Breakfast in bed, a choice of coffee or chocolate, and for lunch we got soup, meat and dessert. And we played games in the afternoon before getting coffee and cakes. Then a little snooze and we watched movies after dinner.”
The man was astonished: “That’s great! I recently spoke to Meyer, who was also locked up there. He told me a different story.”
The other man nods gravely and says: “Yes, well that’s why they’ve picked him up again.”

"We're fucked." [Jul. 19th, 2008|03:57 pm]

maxomai
News that Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki supports Obama's plan to withdraw US forces in approximately sixteen months, according to an interview with Der Spiegel, apparently reached us more or less by surprise, after a White House staffer accidentally sent the story to his media contact list instead of to the usual White House policy wonks and spinmeisters. The timing of these events, coinciding with his trip to Afghanistan and Iraq, could not be better for Obama.

The McCain camp's reaction?

Via e-mail, a prominent Republican strategist who occasionally provides advice to the McCain campaign said, simply, "We're fucked."

Why? Well, consider what would have happened if this were flipped around:

To really understand the importance of Maliki's comments, you need to consider their opposite. Imagine if Maliki had walked in front of the cameras and said, "at this stage, a timetable for withdrawal is unrealistic, and we hope our American friends will not bow to domestic political pressures and be hasty in leaving Iraq just as the country improves." It would be a transformative moment in this election. John McCain would talk of nothing else. The cable shows would talk of nothing else. Magazines would run thousands of covers about "Obama's Iraq Problem." Obama would probably lose the race.

Instead, Obama gets to hammer McCain with this over and over again. As in:

The national security adviser to the Obama campaign, Susan Rice, said the senator welcomed Maliki's support.

"This presents an important opportunity to transition to Iraqi responsibility, while restoring our military and increasing our commitment to finish the fight in Afghanistan," Rice said in a statement Saturday.

God, this is better than sex.

Almost.

T minus 8 days [Jul. 19th, 2008|01:47 pm]

royalbananafish
There are basically 8 days left until I move. I'm a little freaked out about it when I start to think of the big picture, so I just don't do that very much.

Instead, I will first make a list of things for which I am thankful:
-everyone who came to my party last night
-everyone who is taking stuff away and/or took stuff away
-all of my friends here in Portland
-all of my friends who are waiting for in the Bay
-everyone who listened to me vent about school/job stuff
-everyone who hoped, prayed, or thought good things for me
-Sekhet-Maat Lodge, in all its many aspects
-my parents
-my cat
-my boyfriend
-the temp job that is paying my bills
-good coffee
-a fresh start

Mom gave me a great new thought this week: as long as you have both laundry and dirty dishes, you must be doing okay.

Sunday, 27 July, in the evening/late afternoon, I will be packing my truck. If you want to come help, I will bribe you with food (pizza, most likely from Schmizza) and beverages (beer or whatever).

I am doing my best to pack all of the boxes light enough that I can manouver them. I have some furniture that is too big for me to carry by myself. I have three items that are heavy-ish (side board, china cabinet, base of the dining room table).

Good Morning Daily Kos, Weekend Edition... [Jul. 19th, 2008|09:56 am]

maxomai
...is up. A preview:

ITEM! With violence down, Al Qaeda slowing things down, and the Sunnis rejoining the government, things are actually looking almost sane in Iraq. McCain is, of course, thumping his chest and declaring "success" in Iraq, claiming most of all that the "surge" for which he argued was decisive in bringing about the reductions in Iraq violence we're seeing today.

Just one problem: from all appearances, it was talking to the insurgents -- which is kinda the basis for Obama's foreign policy -- that led to all this progress. So .. how the hell is McCain getting away with saying that he was right and Obama is wrong? The answer, my friends, is that McCain knows how to spread the manure with the best of 'em.

ITEM! Bush is going diplomatic on Iran! Is this a sign that he might be taking a more sensible stance, and that bombings might not be in the near future? The hell it is. Justin Raimondo lays it out for us.

Well my Saturday plans are now shot. The stomach bug that A had Weds has been passed to me as of 3:00 this morning. It's been a very bad night for me.

H & A are still likely off to a g'day for little Alex.

I will be doing the apple juice, saltine, netflix, sleep regimine.

I will be checking AIM and texts all day (while conscious)
Human interaction would be nice. (I may be slow to respond)

If I appear on AIM as offline MSG me anyways. My iPhone AIM sometimes shows me offline even when I am logged in.

Waves and hugs

Speaking of dead things... [Jul. 18th, 2008|08:01 pm]

I saw a pretty much intact dead armadillo on the side of the road today. Alex wanted me to stop and bring it home, but then we realized that they're nocturnal, so it must have been in the 100° heat all day. Maybe well see one at night some time (I would say the population seems to be growing, but since I've only seen dead ones so far, that really might not be the case), I really want a dead armadillo.

I got them all! [Jul. 18th, 2008|03:03 pm]

[music |Serge Gainsbourg, Histoire De Melody Nelson]

I found this written on the studio wall:

'The old novelists like Scott were always writing their way out of debt...laudable...a valuable attribute for a writer is tenacity. So William Seward Hall sets out to write his way out of death. Death, he reflects, is equivalent to a declaration of spiritual bankruptcy. One must be careful to avoid the crime of concealing assets...a precise inventory will often show that the assets are considerable and that bankruptcy is not justified. A writer must be very punctilious and scrupulous about his debts.

'Hall once admonished an aspiring writer, "You will never be a good writer because you are an inveterate check dodger. I have never been out with you when you didn't try to dodge your share of the check. Writers can afford many flaws and faults, but not that one. There are no bargains on the writer's market. You have to pay the piper. If you are not willing to pay, seek another vocation." It was the end of that friendship. But the ex-friend did take his advice, probably without intending to do so. He applied his talents to publicity, where no one is ever expected to pay.

'So cheat your landlord if you must, but do not try to shortchange the Muse. It cannot be done. You can't fake quality any more than you can fake a good meal.'

The Onion has the full story here. As usual, their satire is dead on.

Oh yes, I'll admit that it's sad and pathetic that this is the coverage that the potential future President is receiving -- but the fact is, crap like that Entertainment Tonight piece (of which the above is a spoof) is going to be what wins the election. It's just part of Living The Kali Yuga.

Adding a new dimension to gun control. [Jul. 18th, 2008|01:14 pm]

Reporters hurt at gun press conference
Three journalists were hurt when a gun went off at a press conference called by Chinese police to highlight the success of a gun-control campaign.

Sounds to me like the Chinese don't have very good control of their guns.
