Greater Feast of Br. James Garvey [Jun. 9th, 2008|10:49 pm]

kakurowski
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Illustrious Knight of the Order of Kadosch and Companion of the Holy Grail James Garvey, VI*, celebrated his Greater Feast on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 4, 2008 e.v. Several months ago Br. Jim had some back pain that turned out to be cancer which had already metastasized to some of his major organs. He had some kemo, but was too weak to continue with the treatment. He spent his last days in Ithaca, NY near family in hospice care.

I met Br. Jim at my first Tahuti Lodge event, around 1999 - it may have been my IV*. Jim made his mark on our community without fancy titles and visible positions. He was content to step aside from positions of authority and offer invaluable help and support to Tahuti Lodge in other ways, including the dance space the Lodge used for events for many years.

He lives on with us in many ways, including a dramatic reading recorded in Tahuti Lodge's rendition of The Heart of the Master. He is also photographed as The Magician card in the New York City Tarot http://www.tarotpassages.com/newyork.htm . He served the Order as an ordained priest of the E.G.C., and a member of Tahuti Chapter of Rose Croix, undoubtedly some other things that I am not recalling here.

We are fortunate here at WBL to have shared some time with him during the past couple months. Along with Sr. Lena, he attended the Feb. sex magick class with Fr. [info]slq, and he also joined WBL for our change of master ceremony and KRE initiations. [info]richard_kaczyn and I are happy he could make it down that weekend. We feed him brunch and a pina colada, that made him smile. Br. Jim and Sr. Lena snuggled together and slept on our futon that weekend. They worked together extensively as priest and priestess in the Gnostic Mass.

Br. Jim was playful, warm, and elf-like in some ways. He is also the most naked Thelemite I ever met. I attended Masses several times where he was quietly and matter-of-factly in the nude in the congregation. He wore his own body well. New Year's Eve 2006-2007 we were listening to 70's tunes and the Hurdy Gurdy Man song came on. He did this really weird, surreal, lanky dance to it with champagne in his hand. It will forever be the Harvey Garvey Man song.

Thank you for touching my life, Dear Brother. I had so much fun with you and share many happy memories. I hope you enjoy whatever's next. Even though I really don't believe in such things, I like the idea that somewhere you and Lena are doing the Mass again.

Enochian Study & Working Group, Oakland, CA June 15 [Jun. 8th, 2008|06:25 pm]

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Hello! Normally we do our events in San Francisco, but this month, Frater A.D. will be facilitating the new focus of the Enochian Study and Work Group with a session at his home. You are welcome to an interactive study and scrying group at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 15 in Oakland, CA.

If you've been to our previous groups, there are some changes: since we have based this method on Lon DuQuette's recent work, you will need to bring (or plan on getting soon) his newest book, 'Enochian Vision Magick: An Introduction and Practical Guide to the Magick of Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelley' by Lon DuQuette (introduction by Clay Holden).

We'll study this book between workshop sessions. The first half of the classes will be study group, with the second half being a to-be-determined Enochian working, ritual or scrying.

No experience in this format or with Enochian is necessary! Come see what you can discover with our ongoing work.

Contributions of food to share and $10 donation to Mons Abiegnus Oasis are welcome.

If you have been to Mons Abiegnus events before, you are welcome; if we have not met you before, or if you need directions, please RSVP to:
secretary@sf-oto.org

The Cause [May. 28th, 2008|10:27 pm]

starchamber007
“You may thus regard the establishment of the Law of Thelema as an essential element in your True Will, since, whatever the  ultimate nature of that Will, the evident condition of putting it into execution is freedom from external interference.”

-Aleister Crowley, on Duty

Power provides us with both the freedom from restriction in action by allowing us to overcome the obstacles to our goals.  The power of Thelema comes from its ability to make us free, by restricting us to fulfilling that one essential purpose toward which we are perfectly comported.  This task requires magical practice, hard work, physical courage, and a critical engagement with literature.  The prophet has left us with a literary legacy that can serve as a guide in this task in his major masterpieces like Magick in Theory and Practice, Magick Without Tears, The Book of Thoth, the Comment on Liber AL, Liber 418, and a mountain of unpublished letters, diary entries, and other papers.  Through this literature we gain access to the revelation of Liber AL, and its ability, not to make us free, but to give us the power to free ourselves.

Are you on facebook?  Then join my cause, The Law of Thelema, and let’s put in a good showing!  There are a number of people who joined that have expressed reservations about the fact that donations are going to the Caliphate OTO.  I’m trying to encourage non-members who care about the future of Thelema and the works of Aleister Crowley to donate funds to support the publication of this material, and encourage people to devote their resources to this very important work, that should be central for every Thelemite.  I think that with the right kind of vibe among the members involved with the cause, we can do just that.  Thanks in advance for everyone’s support!

Mystics, Mothers, and Magicians Symposium: Why? [May. 17th, 2008|07:31 am]

serpentine418
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

This year, I have the honor of organizing the third national O.T.O. symposium on the subject of the divine feminine. The event is titled, “Mystics, Mothers, and Magicians: Women and Goddesses of O.T.O.”, and will be held in Sacramento in mid-November. A question sometimes asked, if not always aloud, is: “Why should O.T.O. organize a national symposium on the Divine Feminine?” “Is this divisive, in that it focuses only on the feminine?” “Does this constitute an attack on the masculine, or a criticism of O.T.O. as it is?” This essay is designed to answer those questions. (Please note: the opinions expressed herein are my own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of anyone in U.S. Grand Lodge, or the U.S.G.L. Conference Committee.)

I will argue that there is a deep-seated need for exactly this sort of event in our community and in our society. The reasons for this are many: first, the injury inflicted on our collective unconscious by the imbalance of the Abrahamic faiths; second, the qualitative (not quantitative) difference between the male and female genders; third, the requirements of the Great Work, and fourth, the unique and central role that Thelema plays in bringing all these elements together. I will address each of these below.

Question for the community re: Same Sex Marriages [May. 15th, 2008|10:54 am]

[Current Mood | ecstatic]

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law

Seeing as how the California Supreme Court ruled today and overturned the ban on gay marriage in this state, and Mass. has had legal same sex marriage for years now, not to mention places like Canada and Spain that have had legal gay marriage for years as well, what is the Order's policy/tradition with regards to celebrating same sex marriages within the EGC with a Marriage Mass?

Has anyone ever done a Marriage Mass for a same sex couple? For that matter, has anyone ever done a state-recognized marriage, period?

Comments/discussion on this would be welcomed - I've been something of a lurker for a while now, due to a variety of reasons,  so I am very interested in what general opinions, policies (official & unofficial) and thoughts are on this subject, especially since it looks like my partner of 11 years and I may be able to get married legally in the next 30 days. :)

Love is the Law, love under will.

93s,

Frater Taltos

Papers from 2008 CESNUR conference is up; [Apr. 25th, 2008|04:23 pm]

omphalos111
I urge everyone to check out the following papers, from the 2008 CESNUR conference in London, Twenty Years and More: Research into Minority Religions, New Religious Movements and 'the New Spirituality':

-The Scientific Aeon: Magic, Science and Psychology in Crowley’s Scientific Illuminism by my good friend Egil Asprem.
-The Birth of the New Aeon: Magick and Mysticism of Thelema from the perspective of Postmodern A/Theology by Gordan Djurdjevic</a>.
-Crowleyan Echoes: Baraka and Fantasy by Dave Evans.

The study of Crowley as a legitimate subject open for a balanced and fairer approach, is undergoing a revolution in academia and much of it is the result of the policies of the O.T.O. this last decade, entirely in line with the goals set forth by Crowley nearly a century ago in the Blue Equinox. Crowley received his own panel this time, the first one in history. This is an important first step and if our community grows up I also think that his ideas and methods may receive interest from other places as well, and not merely in the history ideas and religion.

Egil Asprem's article is particularly of interest since it contrasts Crowley's views as opposed to his occult contemporaries in a way that was not possible within academia a decade ago. It is a presentation of a longer paper which I gave him advice on regarding psychological matters, which will be published in Aries soon.

Greater Feast of Soror Lena Bender [Apr. 20th, 2008|11:25 am]

***REPOSTED***

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Illustrious Dame Companion of the Holy Grail Lena Bender, VI*, celebrated her Greater Feast on Sunday morning, April 20, 2008 e.v. She passed quietly in her sleep of natural causes and was found around 6:30 a.m. She was in Philadelphia at the time, having attended the Gnostic Mass at Thelesis Oasis the day before.

Soror Lena was an indispensable member to both Tahuti Lodge as well as other local bodies in the region that she frequently visited. Known affectionately as "the Scarlet Mother," she was an ordained priestess of E.G.C. and a member of Tahuti Chapter’s Committee of Four. She recently received her initiation charter and conducted her first Minerval initiations.

She is survived by her parents, her two sons, her niece, and her brother, Brother Tau Roncelin. Further details will be announced as they become available.
