Anyone else completely unable to connect to the new server? I've tried several different FTP programs, none of which will connect me to dreamhost. So either I have the host wrong, or I'm somehow typing in my username/password wrong every. time. Help?

SO. FINALLY. We have a home page again:
http://oscillating.net - or rosiesamfrodo.com or dombillijah.com - THEY ALL WORK. *FLAIL*
I am about to start re-populating the active sites that I backed up. BUT. Let me tell you, folks, Dreamhost is frigging AWESOME. It has a whole bunch of fancy schmancy 'one-click installs' that let you set up a whole range of fabulous stuff on your site. Here's a list of what's available:
WordPress Weblog (v2.0.5) - http://wordpress.org phpBB Forum (v2.0.21) - http://phpbb.com Gallery Image Album (v2.1.2) - http://gallery.menalto.com ZenCart Store (v1.3.6) - http://zencart.com Joomla (Mambo) CMS (v1.0.11) - http://joomla.org
activeCollab Collaboration (v0.6) - http://activecollab.com MediaWiki Wiki (v1.8.2) - http://wikipedia.sourceforge.net
Advanced Poll (v2.03) - http://proxy2.de WebCalendar Calendar (v1.0.4) - http://k5n.us
Other goodies include password protected directories (using secure htaccess), and also BUCKETLOADS of space and bandwidth.
So, if you want to use your site for things like hosting songvids, go right ahead.
I'd just continue to ask that you use your webspace for a website rather than just storage or file hosting. That's not to say that you can't use it to back your own stuff up or host pics you post in lj or whatever, just please don't use it for *only* that.
I'd also ask that you don't store/host contentious files on there - I'm talking episodes of TV, movies, mp3s. These are the things that host tend to crack down the most on, and I'd rather not lose everything and have to move again!
If you'd like any of the above goodies, drop me an email or comment (here or on the blog post at oscillating.net) and I'll set it up for you :D

Hey hostees,
Apologies to those of you who've been left hanging on about this whole shifting-over business. I am rather incompetent when it comes to the technical side of webhosting etc, and have been having trials with transferring domain reg. At any rate, it is a long and slow process that involves much setting of things to do stuff then leaving alone for a bit, and in the interim they tend to slip my mind.
Anyway. Just letting you know that I haven't abandoned you, or the domains - I am going to work on it when I can. Which is to say, hopefully before October 31, but if not then, then definitely in November (my thesis is due Oct 31).
So, hang in there. I'm a-working on it.
(Though to be honest, it doesn't help by the fact that I'm incredibly daunted at the idea of digging up and re-uploading dombillijah.com essentially from scratch. sigh! stupid host4students. oohhh, i am still filled with rage!)
Thanks :)
Hope

So, calling all of you who are hostees at one or the other - please comment here with your preferred domain and username/subdomain, and i'll set you up as soon as I'm able, k?

Finally, with some help, I've figured out how this whole 'setting up ftp users on Dreamhost' thing works.
If you are in control of the following domains, please email me at angstslashhope at livejournal dot com (telling me which one) so I can forward you login details:
claire.oscillating.net lilneko.oscillating.net marginalia.oscillating.net marina.oscillating.net mimesere.oscillating.net strawberry.oscillating.net tweaked.oscillating.net twib.oscillating.net verism.oscillating.net vshendria.oscillating.net
eta: also, god bless whois.com; I've finally tracked down who the hell i registered dombillijah.com with and am working on regaining control of that domain now. hurrah.

| oscillating.net back online |
[26 May 2006|09:56pm] |
I have secured hosting, and the domain transfer has finally gone through.
oscillating.net is ready to be re-populated!
Here are the subdomains I've set up already:
claire.oscillating.net ( irradiatedsoup) decoy.oscillating.net ( angstslashhope) firefly.oscillating.net( angstslashhope) jump.oscillating.net ( angstslashhope) lilneko.oscillating.net ( lilneko) marginalia.oscillating.net ( marginalia) marina.oscillating.net ( edigo?) mimesere.oscillating.net ( mimesere) robin.oscillating.net ( sharpest_rose) strawberry.oscillating.net ( strawberryelfsp) tweaked.oscillating.net ( lapindiable) twib.oscillating.net ( rosemending) verism.oscillating.net ( vissy) vshendria.oscillating.net ( vshendria)
Here are subdomains that I had set up at the old host, but I'm not sure if they're still active:
geoffrey.oscillating.net linaelyn.oscillating.net loreleif.oscillating.net mcee.oscillating.net
I should say at this point that with the transfer over of hosts on all three domains, Mary and I are doing a bit of a spring clean and making sure that the subdomains we bring over have content. i.e. If you have a subdomain, a website at its url would be nice :) We're not restricting it to only 'active' users, though, as there are a few who have dropped out of the picture, but we like to keep up archives.
So those above where I'm not sure 'if they're still active' - it's because I'm not sure if they had sites up, or if the sites had moved elsewhere, or what. I'm not saying I don't still want you! If you had space before, you're still welcome to space. I'd like if you did something with it, though - the ot3 domains are, after all, hosting domains. Yeah?
So, please comment here if you no longer want your subdomain, but also if you're one of the above listed and want to keep hold of yours. I haven't set up usernames & passwords yet, that'll come soonish. But I need to know first who is active and out there.

Hallo hostees.
I've been going through and backing up all the subdomains, and to do so I've had to reset most of the passwords. If you're trying to access your account via ftp (or email) and haven't been able to, leave a comment here and I'll tell you your new password.
Comments are screened.

| IMPORTANT |
[16 Apr 2006|10:13am] |
Attention all hostees of rosiesamfrodo.com, oscillating.net & dombillijah.com!
Our host for all of the above domains is shutting down. They're giving us until May 14 to back up our data.
Mary and I are currently looking into purchasing replacement webspace, so the domains and archives can live on.
dombillijah.com is already gone - as a testament to how awful the service got, and how much they screwed things up, they suspended dbl.com for 'generating spam emails' (aka dbl was used as a faked return address) about a week before this happened. They won't respond to my help ticket on the subject, so don't hope for more than the worst.
dombillijah.com hostees may be able to find records of their data here: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://dombillijah.com
I am currently downloading all the data on rsf.com and o.net. If you have your own backup and will be happy to re-upload it when we get to the new host, please let me know.
Above all, if you are a hostee, please join this community. I'll be using it as the chief communication conduit during this whole debacle.
Feel free to friend if you are not a hostee, but interested in our progress all the same. I'll be flocking some hostee-specific entries.
Please pimp this community to any hostees you know of.

I'm trying to update my website today with the new fic and some neat new backgrounds ladybella made for me, but my ws_ftp program that I saved from my old computer, while it seems to have the right information already in it, every time I try to connect, it times out.
Suggestions?

Hope, you posted that we are over the bandwidth quota for this month and I'm not sure what that means in terms of posting the next chapter of Borderlines. It may be ready to post by tonight but I don't want to to do anything until I know if it's okay or not. Should I wait until Friday?

i've just written up an 'updating your own site' instruction/help file - fairly straight forward, i think. anyone interested in it? let me know if you are and i'll set things up for you. and send it over.
it'd be good to get some feedback on whether it's helpful or not, and modify it to be better, etc. comment or email if you're interested.

I've got a wee problem.
I've been able to upload pictures and whatnot to my dbl space, but anything in the way of HTML won't. Technically it will, but it won't have any content. It's like an empty file.
I'm stumped. *flail*

hostees - you should have got an email from mary or i about our host changing servers this month, urging you to backup your site.
i've just gotten another email from them saying that they're transferring data over the next 2-3 days, so if you update your site during that period you'll have to do it again once the new servers are all installed. so my recommendation is to just hold off updating your sites for a week or so, to be sure.
thanks, Hope

Is dbl mail behaving strangely for anyone else currently? Specifically, Eudora keeps insisting on downloading and deleting from the server the entire previous contents of my mailbox -- as if it's ignoring the normal server flags for read/unread, fetched/unfetched. And my Eudora settings are not set to that, and I've actually just five minutes ago installed a new build of Eudora and it's still doing it. At first I noticed the server status of all my downloaded dbl mail had suddenly changed from "leave" to "fetch", at which time I changed it back manually, to no avail -- so hey, it could be Eudora's issue, but I'll be blowed if I know what to do, because I've checked and rechecked the settings.
And also I've discovered lj comments made today that I haven't received notifications for, which makes me more inclined to think something is weird with the dbl server rather than Eudora. But on the other hand -- livejournal, feh.

sharpest_rose thinks she's being nasty.
we she has about 80 subdomains/users on rosiesamfrodo.com. she has a great deal of space. about a quarter of that space was being used. one of her users, over the past day or so, has uploaded something that has literally completely filled all the space at rsf. that's four times the sum of space that 80-odd users take up.
we're both pretty trusting about giving out space, and i say to people when i sign them up - we have a fair bit of space, so feel free to post pics in your lj and use it for storage, etc, but within reason - don't upload a stack of mp3s or something. i don't limit the amount of space people have.
so i don't know if someone has sent a really really huge email (liek, REALLY huge) and is using up rsf space that way, or (i suspect) has uploaded something massive. like pirated software.
we can't tell through the site stats that our host provides us *who* has uploaded such a huge file, we've gone through and tried to limit how much space users get and in a few cases we couldn't restrict it to the amount we wanted on account of them already being over - but there were a few of those, so we still can't tell who uploaded several hundred megabytes without going through several complicated steps.
i'm trying not to be nasty here, but this is making me grumpy. i don't want to scare whoever it is off, but i don't know how someone could have done this without realising the consequences. i just want this to be fixed up asap!
so, if this is you, please, tell me or mary. feel free to email us privately (hopeful_fiction at hotmail dot com OR thebitterone at hotmail dot com). i'm going to slowly by a process of elimination work out who it is, so please save me some time by coming forward as i'm going to work it out anyway.
so if you're a rsf hostee and wondering why you can't upload stuff or receive large emails, that's why.

When I click on the link to my site from the main dombillijah.com page, I get a blank page with "this is a placeholder for the subdomain kaydeefalls.dombillijah.com". Is this because I've labelled something wrong on FTP or...or...I dunno. Help?

I am having trouble uploading stuff. I can connect, the file transfer will start, and then it sort of locks up for a bit and I get a 'Send error: connection reset' and then a 'Receive error: Blocking call cancelled' message. Then everything seems to move very slowly: it won't even close the connection properly.
However, I can download from my site to my computer. It seems to only work one direction.
Hope suggested that I try unplugging my DSL modem for awhile, which I did, but it didn't help. Has anyone else had this problem?
