These are all more my personal experiences at ORC than an actual play-by-play con report. If you're looking for that, I suggest checking out theonering.net. But, I wrote up a lot, and did include some pictures, as well a links to videos and photos and transcripts when possible. So if you're interested, follow the links (each link will open a new page):

Friday

Saturday (charity breakfast)

Saturday (photo ops)

Saturday (Billy's panel) (now with more photos!)

Saturday (David's panel, Billy and David's autographs)

Saturday (Beecake concert)

Sunday (Andy Day)

And for anyone who might be a Beecake fan, and would like to know what in the heck they're singing, I have a Beecake lyrics post that I've been keeping updated for a while now.

Hope to see you all next year at ORC 2008!

Not related to ORC, but I thought I'd post for any LOTR/Viggo fans interested...

American Cinematheque

Saturday, March 17 - 7:30 PM

Discussion in between the films with actors Unax Ugalde and Viggo Mortensen (ALATRISTE) and actress Ingrid Rubio (SALVADOR)

ALATRISTE, 2006, 135 min. Dir. Agustin Diaz Yanes. Viggo Mortensen (THE LORD OF THE RINGS, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE) stars as the brooding, irresistible Captain Alatriste, 17th century soldier, mercenary and lover, in this superb adaptation of the historical novel by Arturo Perez-Reverte. The plot twists and turns like a dark river, covering 20 years from the wars in Flanders to France - and along the way Alatriste crosses paths with characters real and fictional including actress Maria de Castro (Ariadna Gil, PAN'S LABYRINTH), the Count-Duke of Olivares (Javier Camara), poet Francisco de Quevedo (Juan Echanove) and others. The mournful heart of the film remains Mortensen, though, who performs all of his dialogue in fluent Spanish (he lived in Venezuela and Argentina as a youth). Nominated for 14 Goya Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. 2007 Goya Winner of Best Script, Best Art Direction, Best Costume.

An invitation to come on over for pics and videos...

I met a lot of folks at the Con this year and that was truly wonderful. If you don't know me, I've been doing photos at the Cons for the last few years, and this year I also did some videos. Right now I have 1/2 of the photos I took at the Hotel Cafe gig of Beecake up, plus some very short (because they weren't allowed) videos. I also have one video up of "I'm Sorry" from the ORC gig, and am trying my best to figure out the best way to post more. I have literally 100's of photos from the panels, Billy's Brunch and the ORC Beecake gig that I will be editing and posting through the week, so I invite you over to take a look and drop me a line!

Quick note: in the past I've put up Shutterfly albums, but this year I'm doing the LJ galleries, because it's easier to work them into posts. However, that means you can't really get prints of them. I will eventually load them all up into Shutterfly for prints (just fyi - I don't make any money off this, you'll be paying for these the same way you would for prints of your own photos), but it will take some time. You don't have to ask to friend me, and I won't be upset if you friend me just until the pics come up in Shutterfly, so you don't miss them. I just want people to have good videos and pics of the whole experience. I do ask that you credit me if you put any of these up on your LJ or site - and I lovelovelove comments. Thank you - *G*.

And it was so great meeting people there!!! *waves*

Of course, if they program it right (*stifles snort*), that could mean that some very interesting scholar-track programming could happen that wouldn't conflict with the celebrity appearances.

Billy and Daisy are both appearing on Saturday, so load up on the protein bars and energy drinks, as it's going to be a looooong day!

Creation finally posted a peek at all the wonderful scholar and artist panels to come this weekend. What are you interested in attending? I'm told they are going to try not to have conflicts between the actor panels and these. I'm very curious about "Why We Should Care About the Children of Hurin" and of course any panel with Cliff is bound to be entertaining!

DOUG ADAMS -- Themes in Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings Scores – part 1
Two Oscars and millions in DVD sales later, people are still clamoring for more music and more information about the magical scores Howard Shore created for The Lord of the Rings movies. Join us for an exploration of the major and minor themes in these stirring musical works. There will be a brief Q&A to recap the FOTR box set that was released two holiday seasons ago, and then Doug will dive right into TTT box set. (60 min) FRIDAY

DOUG ADAMS -- Themes in Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings Scores – part 2
Two Oscars and millions in DVD sales later, people are still clamoring for more music and more information about the magical scores Howard Shore created for The Lord of the Rings movies. Join us for an exploration of the major and minor themes in these stirring musical works. There will be a brief Q&A to recap the TTT box set from the previous panel discussion and then Doug will discuss the ongoing work for the upcoming ROTK box set. (45 min) SATURDAY

"RINGERS: The Director's Screening" With Carlene Cordova & Cliff Broadway (and maybe Tom DeSanto and Jeff Marchelletta)
Come join a special screening of the award-winning documentary RINGERS: LORD OF THE FANS where the film's director & writers will be on hand for a special LIVE running commentary. It's like a "Director's Commentary" you would find on a DVD -- but this is live, uncensored, in real time with the film! Enjoy ribald stories of mischief and globe-trotting mayhem as Carlene Cordova & Cliff Broadway reveal secrets of the little fan movie that could! (100-120 min)

JUDY GRIVICH is an expert costumer and will be doing one costuming panel on armor and another general costuming panel for the various races of Middle Earth.

JUDY GRIVICH - Making Armor in Your Kitchen
Have you ever wanted to create costumes out of resin plastics and fiberglass, but feel intimidated because you don't have a workshop with every tool known to man? Do professional plastics catalogues full of techno-speak bewilder you? This class will cover how to create your own armor out of resin, thermoplastics, and fiberglass in your kitchen with a few simple tools and supplies from Home Depot and the internet. We will cover moldmaking, resin casting, how to build your own vacuform table, vacuforming, and fiberglassing. (60 min)

JUDY GRIVICH - Lord of the Rings Costuming
This panel will cover the basics of making and wearing costumes from Lord of the Rings. We will introduce you to basics such as patterns, fabric choices, and design, as well as tips and tricks for a fun convention experience. (60 min)

GREG WRIGHT is the author of Tolkien in Perspective (VMI, 2003) and Peter Jackson in Perspective (HJ Books, 2004). Writer in Residence at Puget Sound Christian College in Everett, Washington, Greg has reviewed films for a number of websites, including Past the Popcorn and Hollywood Jesus. For the latter, he wrote and edited a vast archive of articles and interviews related to Peter Jackson’s Rings films. He is an internationally-noted lecturer on Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings.

GREG WRIGHT - Why We Should Care About the Children of Hurin
This April will mark the publishing of the first entirely new narrative work from J.R.R. Tolkien since The Return of the King. Sure, it’s pieced together from stories in The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and The History of Middle-earth; but those were just fragments, and the academic tone of those manuscript analyses often got in the way of the literature. In this talk, Greg Wright gives an overview of this tale of Turin Turambar, explains the controversy about it being published under Christopher Tolkien’s name, and delves into the control that the Tolkien Estate has over Tolkien’s manuscripts. (1 hr)

GREG WRIGHT - The Hobbit: More Than a Fuzzy Children’s Tale
Many critics are worried about the prospect of Peter Jackson turning J.R.R. Tolkien’s children’s lit classic into another dark and violent exploration of Middle-earth. Are the critics’ fears justified? To some extent. But in this talk, Greg Wright expands on the thesis of his commentary for TheOneRing.net: that, especially for cinematic fans of Middle-earth, The Hobbit is more about learning to live with the dark corners of Middle-earth than it is about waxing nostalgic for the goodness and light of The Shire. From that perspective, Peter Jackson is the right man for the job. (1 hr)

GREG WRIGHT - The Scouring of the Shire: What We (and Jackson) Missed in Peter Jackson’s Films. In this reprisal of the lecture that he delivered at Notre Dame University’s Center for Ethics and Culture, Greg Wright analyzes in detail the significance of the denouement of Tolkien’s tale—and explains why that vision is wholly incompatible with Peter Jackson’s view of Middle-earth. (1 hr)

Solo or Group Panel:
Greg Wright and Cliff Broadway (and maybe others) - Untold Third-Age Tales We’d Like to Hear. Scuttlebutt has it that New Line Cinema intends to make two films out of The Hobbit, and that the second film will include “new” storylines that will connect it to Peter Jackson’s LoTR films. Is this a good idea at all? If it is, what storylines would you like the screenwriters to consider for inclusion? Join what will likely be a lively, entertaining, and maddening discussion! (1 hr)

ASHLEE & RACHEL SCOTT and CARLENE CORDOVA - Fan-Filmmaking 101
Have you been seeing fan films online or at conventions for years now and wondered how to go about making them? Do you have ambitions to move from the Fan Filmmaking field into a more professional aspect of the industry? Come listen to some stories on how our attending filmmakers got started, what equipment they use or recommend, where they get their ideas from and how they talk all their friends into helping them out. (45 min)

"Tolkien Animated!" (MAIN AUDITORIUM EVENT) Participants: Carlene Cordova & Cliff Broadway
When Ink & Paint mixes with Bilbo & Smaug, the results are bright and animated! Join our high-spirited discussion on a favorite subject: how animated versions of Tolkien’s books have given us delight (and sometimes shame) over the years. Weighing in are Carlene Cordova and Cliff Broadway, co-creators of the hit pop docu RINGERS: LORD OF THE FANS. Why are fans so polarized by Ralph Bakshi? What would Pixar or Miyazaki do if they got hold of “The Hobbit?” Tantalizing thoughts! (1 hr)

"The Game's the Thing" Participants: Cliff Broadway & Mike Urban
From the cherished and dusty pages of TORN's cornerstone blog GREEN BOOKS, join both Ostadan (Mike Urban) & Quickbeam (Cliff Broadway) as your hosts to the world of Tolkien-inspired games. Dice, cards, tokens & yellow plastic rings are all you need to enjoy a hobbit’s holiday. Many clever game designs have been produced over the years -- running the gamut from Board Games to Trading Cards to X-Box. Bring a copy of your favorite game -- we’ll play!
I was starting to pack earlier, and as I was going through my travel-sized shampoo, etc., I remembered a while back there was that new rule about what liquids could and could not be taken on airplanes. I thought I better double-check on what the current rules were before I'd finished my packing! Looking at the Transportation Security Administration website, this is what I found:

::

What Can I Bring?

On Tuesday, September 26, TSA adjusted the ban on liquids, gels, and aerosols.

Air travelers may now carry liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bag when going through security checkpoints.

With certain exceptions for prescription and over-the-counter medicines, baby formula and breast milk, and other essential liquids, gels, and aerosols, the following rules apply to all liquids, gels, and aerosols you want to carry through a security checkpoint.

1. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three-ounce or smaller containers. Larger containers that are half-full or toothpaste tubes rolled up are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.
2. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.
3. Each traveler must remove their quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.

Please keep in mind that these rules were developed after extensive research and understanding of current threats. They are intended to help air travelers bring essential toiletries and other liquids, gels and aerosols for short trips. If you need larger amounts of liquids, gels and aerosols such as toothpaste or shampoo, please place them in your luggage and check them with your airline.

To ensure the health and welfare of certain air travelers there are no limits on the amounts of the following liquids, gels and aerosols you may carry through a security checkpoint:

* Baby formula and breast milk if a baby or small child is traveling;
* All prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including KY jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes;
* Liquids including water, juice, or liquid nutrition or gels for passengers with a disability or medical condition;
* Life-support and life-sustaining liquids such as bone marrow, blood products, and transplant organs;
* Items used to augment the body for medical or cosmetic reasons such as mastectomy products, prosthetic breasts, bras or shells containing gels, saline solution, or other liquids; and,
* Gels or frozen liquids needed to cool disability or medically related items used by persons with disabilities or medical conditions.

You are not limited in the amount or volume of these above items you may bring in your carry-on baggage. However, if these items are in containers larger than three ounces, please perform the following:

1. Separate these items from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size and zip-top bag.
2. Declare you have the items to one of our Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
3. Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening.

We have also taken steps to ensure the security of the boarding areas after you pass through our security checkpoints. Therefore, any liquid, gel or aerosol, such as coffee or soda, purchased in the secure area beyond the security checkpoint is allowed aboard your plane. Please note that if you have a layover and are re-screened at your connecting airport the current rules (see above) for carry-ons apply.

::

This mostly applies to those who won't be checking their luggage. Be sure to read the Permitted and Prohibited Items page on the Transportation Security Administration website for full information.

Notes on ORC Food

I've been without a computer for a bit, so I apologize if this has already been brought up. But just in case the concern still exists regarding food...

As I was looking up info on the Marriott, I came across a note on a travel site saying that the hotel offers complimentary shuttle service to some nearby (5 mile or so radius) shopping centers. So I emailed the hotel directly about this, and the representative confirmed saying, "We do offer complimentary shuttle service to both the Burbank Town Center and the Empire Center. Speak with the Front Desk Agent of Guest Services to obtain a copy of the shuttle schedule."

A list of food options can be found here for The Burbank Town Center.

As for the Empire Center, it has a Target and Costco (if groceries be your need), as well as some eateries such as Krispy Kreme (mmmm...doughnuts), Outback Steakhouse, and a pub! Go here for more info. (pdf file)

So, there are some other places to eat besides the hotel; however, there will be some journey time involved, alas. Another thought was the airport, but from the looks of Burbank's terminal map, there really isn't anything at all before the passenger screening areas and coupled with their possible prices, makes that most probably an out.

Also, I'm sure that once you arrive at the hotel that the desk will have menus or numbers for some delivery.
