So what's up everyone? Long time no talksee? Right.. 'cos no one ever updates this thing!

-feels all stupid-like and whatnot-

Sooo let's hear it!

I'll start. I just found a band called The Chemical Brothers.. has anyone heard of them? I bought their album Push the Button while I was in a comic book store in the heart of Boston, and it just reeks of sweetness. It's like Orbital except these guys talk/sing/rap and whatever.

Has anyone heard/gotten Orbital's last single?

Blue Album

Okay, the Blue Album has been circulating on various P2P networks for a few weeks now. Who's heard it and what do you think?

Disclaimer: this is all In My Humble Opinion and subject to change with repeated listenings...

In some ways, Blue feels very retrospective. The selection of songs seems to echo the different musical phases Orbital has passed through in the past 15 years. Transient wouldn't feel out of place on In Sides. You Lot is reminiscent of Forever on Snivilisation. And One Perfect Sunrise is the perfect complement to Halcyon, not to mention a fitting finish to their final album (1).

Oh, and Pants is definitely not pants.

My biggest disappointments were Acid Pants, a great 303 workout that is destroyed by overuse of a silly sample and Easy Serv, which Paul Hartnoll rightly likened to Muzak.

So how do I rate it overall? I'm afraid Blue doesn't compare to Brown, Snivilisation, In Sides or even Middle of Nowhere (2), each of which comprise a whole that is greater than the some of their parts. They still represent the Hartnoll's creative peak. However, I am happy to report that the songs on Blue are more memorable than those on The Altogether (3) and this, coupled with the aforementioned nostalgic feel, makes it a great way for Orbital to say goodbye to their fans.

---
(1) And am I the only one who felt sad as the last loop faded, signaling the end of Orbital?

(2) Give Middle of Nowhere a chance! I think it's a lot better than most people give it credit for.

(3) Although the songs on The Altogether are very danceable. I will never forget my one and only Orbital concert in 2001, where P&P warmed up the crowd with the aural insanity that is Tension, encouraging us all to "Dig the music, kids!" (And for the next two hours, I danced like a spastic monkey)
The first time I heard orbital was in the movie Hackers. I immediately fell in infatuation with the first song of the movie, Halcyon and on and on. I was 8 at the time and later that summer (or perhaps the next) I was in Minneapolis and heard some guy blasting the song in his car, very loudly. When he got out I asked him who that band was and ever since my collection has grown. I've seen them twice, once in Chicago, on the forth of July, 1999. I was twelve at the time up to that point, I'd never been as happy. I was truly obsessed. It was an 18+ show so I'd gone with my dad in hopes to get in because I was with him. After a security guard told us "I guarantee you, that you are not getting into this show!" I panicked and began crying. I feel a little embarrassed looking back at that, but hell- it was Orbital! We finally got the manager of the venue to let us in, and it was the second best show I've ever been to. The Crystal Method opened and did a fantastic job. Orbital had huge video projectors with great images/films that went along perfectly with their songs. Especially Satan, which is one of the best songs to see/hear live. The second time I'd seen them, I was surprised and delighted beyond anything when I found out that on their relatively small 19-date US-tour, they were coming to my city, Milwaukee (Wisconsin). The crowd was like nothing I'd ever seen before or to this date. Their energy and enthusiasm was perpetuating everyone's great moods. Before they went on- I'd gone with my dad again- my father and I parted ways for half an hour, and the next time I saw him he had this huge grin on his face. "I just hung out with Orbital." I actually grabbed him by the throat in a wrath of fury and jealousy. "Don't worry, they want to meet you- we can talk to them after the show." So, after the greatest performance of any kind that I've ever seen, I got to talk to The Hartnoll brothers for 2 hours in a very small, very happy group. My favorite song must be Halcyon and On and On, and there's too many more that stand out, just none that come to mind when trying to pick from their entire catalog. I'm really anticipating the blue album, and I think a lot more of their heart has gone into it from the sounds of it. I think they've had a good run and I won't be too disappointed with their breaking up, as long as they do one last US tour.

The Blue Album

I will keep this brief, as I still need to sort out how I feel about this news.

Orbital will be releasing their Blue Album, and it will be their last album as Orbital. Beyond that, the brothers are apparently going to start doing their own thing or go their separate ways.

They will also be doing their last English tour in Glastonbury. Since it specifices last "English" tour, I hope very much that there is a slim possibility of them doing a tour in America. If there is one thing I must do in this life before I die, it is to see Orbital live, and I fear now the chance to do so is already fading, if not gone completely.

. . . . . .

This comes as very bittersweet news, indeed.

Anyway, the rest of how I feel is best described with silence...

My introduction

It was mentioned earlier on this journal that Mortal Kombat was someone's first introduction to Orbital. This experience runs precise to my own. I was deeply moved by the song when I first heard it, and went on a reckless search for it. Randomly, I found the Brown Album at Barnes and Noble, and, admittedly, was taken aback by the first track, Time Becomes. This was to be my first introduction to any Electronica music, and by the end of the CD, I was hooked.

Needless to say, Orbital has been my favorite band ever since (some 9 years ago), and I have purchased every album of theirs in the meantime.

Anyway, that story wasn't terribly interesting, but it's a start.

. . . . . .

Favorite Orbital tracks:
1) The Box
2) Halcyon+On+On
3) P.E.T.R.O.L.
4) Belfast
5) Meltdown

Other Favorite Artists:
1) Kid Spatula/mu-ziq
2) Juno Reactor
3) Jesper Kyd
4) Enigma
5) Paul van Dyk

Did you ever know that The Box had lyrics? I definetely didn't, but here they are:

Shares his neighbors with a building
Knows addresses of by heart
Draws a picture of his future
Keeps the paper close at hand
Packs his tongue into a suitcase
Suffers terror on the train
And he wants to start a movement
Cause he's indestructible
Destructible..suffers terror on the train
He indestructible
And you know they'll never find us
And they'll leave us alone
And if we just keep on talking
Then we'll still make it home
There's commotion and promotion
Now they've done good every war
Sell our pictures to a paper
Now that everyone must know

Trading satellites for substance
Let spectators pay their way
We'll invade the trevi fountain
Now that everyone must pay
Mama and babies mother tragedy
Babies mothers tragedy
Babies mothers tragedy
Terrifies the kill

Anyways, if you haven't seen the music video to The Box, it's definetely one of their best. I personally appreciate it further than most of the other music videos, it delves into a situation which many of us would dream about but realize the consequences too early.

-bows- Come on people!

I actually got turned on to Orbital when I was working as a DJ at my college radio station -- all of the staff were responsible for listening to and rating CDs, and I happened upon the rather plain cover of Orbital 2 in the bin. Been a fan ever since.

My top tracks:

1. Lush 3-x
2. Halcyon+On+On
3. Funny Break
4. Doctor Who Theme
5. Choice

Sadly, I'm mostly stuck on the dorky 80's technopop -- New Order, Depeche Mode, etc.

It all started when the kid across the street told me to get this certain Mortal Kombat CD. Well, I ended up getting the soundtrack, which was the wrong CD. I kept the CD, and I thought it was awesome. The song 'Halcyon' on there was extremely touching. I didn't realize the band name, I just kept listening to the song, because I was young at the time. I put the CD away and didn't listen to it for a long time. A year or so later, after listening to the CD off and on, I look at the CD case and saw the band Orbital. Well, I was on the internet, and I found this weird site with all these songs you could download. I found Orbital on there and it had the song "Funny Break." I downloaded that and listened to it countless times. After hearing this much, I figured this was an awesome band, but they slipped my mind and I didn't listen to them again. One day, I was in the CD store, and I found the CD "The Altogether." I saw that the CD had "Funny Break" on it, and I was extremely excited! I bought the CD without knowing what kind of music would be on it, because "Halcyon" and "Funny Break" sound similar but also different. I got the CD and found out more about the band, and now Orbital is one of my favorite bands ever!
