    Time Event

I can go back to the Non-Euclidean now pls?
My con report is friends-locked (though pretty much anyone who was at the con is welcome to nudge me to be friended), so I want to add a couple of comments here.

(BTW, for those who don't know me, I'm Elanor aka Gopher Dad. I'm the one with the red hair who was most often seen either in Ops eating creme eggs or running around like a mad thing after Misha was sent to hospital.)

I dislike griping, especially about a con I enjoyed, but I do know how useful constructive criticism can be so I honestly tried to think of some...and it's surprisingly difficult. The con was amazing. I had a brilliant time (even though I only got to one programming item), the committee were all lovely and supportive and generally wonderful and so were 90% of the other members I spoke to.

The only genuine complaints I have are about scheduling - specifically, the art auction being opposite Neil Gaiman and the signing session being placed in Newbury right before dinner. The former made organising gophers difficult, and the latter had both the hotel and several members grouching at me. But I know from bitter experience how difficult scheduling a con can be (and I've only ever managed five streams!), so to have only two scheduling gripes after a con with that many streams is quite a feat.

Obviously there were a few hotel issues too. Not the layout, which I actually liked (being the source of plenty of jokes), but the weird temperature fluctuations, the lack of English-speaking staff and the fact that a malibu and diet coke was a different price every time I went to the bar. Still, they always seemed to want to help where they could (and where they could understand the request) and the food was generally outstanding, so those issues are incredibly minor.

And that is everything I could come up with even when specifically trying to think of stuff-what-could-be-improved. So seriously, great job everyone. I hope you all have a well-earned rest and feel very proud of yourselves.

    Con Rep
I wasn't going to do a proper conrep for Orbital 2008, having already commented on my personal highlights (and the fact that I wasn't feeling that good and went to bed early on Friday and Saturday – but then I loathe discos so would have avoided same anyway). However, feedback is sort of required, so, feedback it is. Behind the cut )

Last one out switch off the lights ...
... I took Tuesday off work as I knew I'd be helping strip down the hotel and get the ops kit back out to [info]cobrabay's house in Wokingham (about 30 miles from the Radisson).

So Tuesday I got back to the hotel about 10:20am in time to see the long queues of people checking out from the hotel and a chance to say goodbye to a bunch of people. The next eight hours were spent in closing down the convention, packing things into boxes, buying a sofa (I believe there may still be a couple for sale, along with single seats and coffee tables), though you may have to arrange your own transport!), running around trying to reunite people with bits of kit, a quick lunch for all the volunteers, donated by the hotel(!) (especially the tech team who completed the stripping down of the main hall, the disassembly of the stage, the taking apart of all the sofas etc.), and shuttling cart after cart of kit down to the various cars and vans leaving the con. ... including waving goodbye to a big pink pig which will be heading over to the US shortly (I hope they don't have problems with importing British livestock!). We also sat and discussed some of the things that had gone better than expected and some of the things to improve next time, notes were taken. We also read out some of the early conreports that were appearing on the lists to keep up the spirits of those working away on packing and stripping stuff down.

There was one great humanitarian disaster though ...

... there were two half full kegs of beer left (London Pride and Spitfire I think), and while the hotel could return the unopened kegs, those two had to be paid for by the con, so it was free beer for anyone that wanted any ... and since we were all driving or worn out from the end of con, no one wanted any. *sob*

Mid-afternoon in my wandering around making sure all the signage was down, I discovered the entire photowall was still up in the Atrium, so [info]twinfair and A^3 took it to pieces (I don't know what happened to it after that, but two DVDs of all pictures collected by the photowall team have been passed on to [info]twinfair for the production of the souvenir book ... keep sending in your photos and con reports!). A^3 loaded Vince (our treasurer) into his car and they headed off to the airport (Vince claimed to be flying home, but I didn't know he lived in Rio?), and by 6pm everyone was gone aside from me and Eddie (I'm sure there were a few stragglers of attendees elsewhere in the hotel, but as the last convention function room, we were the end of the con!)

At 18:30 we loaded the last trolley of ops kit, and ceremonially took down the Ops Room sign and ceremonially retrieved the blue white tack used to hold up the sign (can't have been blue, though it appeared blue-ish, as our hotel requirements said strictly white tack only! :-) ) and Eddie closed the ops room door for the last time and it magically turned back from a place of wonderment and delight (ahem) to just another boring convention function room named Windsor.

We gave the trolley back to the hotel, got the parking ticket validated and drove off into the sunset. Dropped off the ops kit in Wokingham and then did a run down to the Chinese for an evening meal, watched a bit of the Stargate movie that had been on over Easter ... but by this time I wanted to be home while I was still awake so I eventually got home about 22:30, and was in bed asleep about 30 minutes later (my earliest night all weekend, by an average of about four hours!)

Feedback - stage lighting and a missing moderator, food
You asked for feedback, a couple of minor points from an otherwise excellent con.

The stage lighting in the main hall was a bit odd - seemed to be a couple of VERY bright red lights shining in my face from somewhere off to my left when I was on stage for the Cthulhu panel, and during QA sessions the combination of very bright stage lighting and low light on the audience made it difficult to see who had their hands up, let alone who the person actually was. I assume that the bright lighting was necessary for the video camera, but it was really a bit off-putting.

The balloon debate didn't actually have a moderator - someone from the audience stepped in when it became obvious that there was nobody there! I hope someone gave him a beer token...

I personally found most of the food OK, even the lunch time selections - but at lunch time the food was much better downstairs than on the 3rd floor, where I'd imagine most people wanted to eat. The 11 PM selection was lousy though - at that time of night I really didn't want fried food, something like soup and a roll or a filled roll would have been much better.

    Newbie Con Report...
Well, that was my first EasterCon, and my situation leading up to it was a little less than ideal - a month or so without proper downtime...  but I had a fantastic time anyway - even if I was already far too tired when I arrived, let alone by the end!

On the strength of that con, I'll be at LX 2009 if it's practical... and at Odyssey 2010 even if it's not practical!

I've posted a sprawling and not 100% coherent con report over on my LJ.

Orbital - what I did for the last few years...
    Years ago

Some years ago many of the people behind Redemption decided they would have a go at an Eastercon. I am not a fan, I have only ever gone to one Eastercon before, though I like fans.

So I setup the mailing list, and when asked the domain and website and got the booking system ready to take members.

I sat back and did as little as needed to support the booking system and let Judith get on with the work of Con Chair. However I also got to here of all the problems, suggest a few answers, fix/tweak/modify/extend the membership database and get on with life.

    Six months Ago

I decided to give the charity book stall another outing - I have run it at most Redemptions and the Eastercon I attended. I also dreamed up the idea for a panel on the Clangers.

    One to Two Months Ago

Hearing of the problem with the scaffolding and the lack of progress in this area for tech I volunteered to take over the problem, then realised they didn't want scaffolding, what was needed was a tech tower and a stage built - scaffolding was just one way to do it. For the tech tower - why not hire a scaffolding tower. And for the stage - buy some cheap timber and build it ourselves to meet our own specifications.

Tech upgraded their van spec so it could carry all the timber, I ordered a scaffolding tower - full credit to HSS, they queried why given I lived in Dorset why did I ask for it from their Heathrow depot. I did design 1 of the stage - assuming you could walk behind the pillar. A few weeks ago some committee and staff went and measured the commonwealth and I had some real measurements to work with - that pillar was probably too tight a fit the stage right entrance had to be at the back, also we discovered the hotel did not have as many steps as we needed (design 2 of stage).

Monday before con - Day off

Tuesday before con - Got a ton of books down from the loft, packed up 4 crates of tools, started losing the lounge to 4 separate piles - Tools, Books, Our stuff, Other con stuff.

Wednesday before con - Packed the last stuff, Kelvin hired the van, we went to B&Q and bought a lot of timber, nails and stuff and started filling the van. Kelvin went home to load his stuff in the van. He came back with people, and some junk, we unloaded most of the junk and repacked most of our stuff and his into the van and our car. After a lunch we set off for the Radisson. Arriving mid afternoon to find they expected us on Thursday... After a short while Kelvin arrives and we go and hire the scaffolding tower. This was an easy evening spent nattering and socialising. I looked in the Commonwealth and noticed that the space behind the pillar is enough for people to get behind and that the measurements were wrong anyway. Worry about that in the morning.

Thursday - Up early and by 7:30 we had the van at the loading bay for the commonwealth and unloaded all the tower, tools, wood and a few other things. Shortly afterwards Stage Electrics arrived with the Tech stuff. First task, assemble the tech tower. Second task assemble stage. When the screen was setup I said it was too low, but was ignored. The projector/screen distance required us to build the stage about a metre forward of where we had planned. (Stage design 3 began to take shape).

First we built a table for the tech tower. Then start on the stage surround - this was built as three substructures (left, back, right), then the rear entrance and the top front. Most of the time Henry and I worked together, but eventually others arrived and helped - Oscar built steps and then a separate sub team started adding the fabric. Other than a break for the evening meal for an hour I worked from 7:30am to 11:30pm. My (educated) guess for materials was pretty good - I only had one unused sheet of chipboard, and half a dozen lengths of wood.

Friday - Start setting up the Charity book stall, a few interruptions from Tech, to fix things and modify bits, a request for this and that. The book stall filled all four tables - 1 of Tapes, 1 for hardbacks and non fiction, and two for paperbacks. A couple of boxes of donations are added as I setup. The tables are well placed (in the middle), but Redemption is unfortunately in a corner, not next to me as I had asked. By the time the dealers room had opened I had already taken 30 pounds. Trade on Friday was comparatively slow, but adequate. There was a plan to have a video feed from the Commonwealth to Newbury 2 for popular items, but the cabling provided rather than one long cable was three separate cables without connectors, In the 4 crates of tools I didn't have my cabling tools, first attempt at joining the cables using what was available didn't work - we decide that we had to have a drum of cable and proper connectors at the ends only - we left this for today. I did attend the opening ceremony and the Celdih but missed everything else.

Saturday - Busy day in the dealer room, many more donations, at one time I had book stacks at the ends of the rows as I could not fit them all in. Periodic calls away to fix things, one "ten minute job" took nearly two hours. Rather than finding a cable drum, all that we gained for the data link was some proper connectors, a cabling tool and tester - this did not work either after several hours we gave up again - we must have a drum. Just after 6 I got into my chaos "Librarian" and with Roger Robinson spent 45 minutes collecting for "Match it for Pratchett" - raising just under £500! I did find time to see the Masquerade and Cabaret.

Sunday - Yet another attempt of the Commonwealth-Newbury connection - this time with a drum of cable. Helped by Colin who was a BT technition we got it to work, pity the equipment we wanted to connect didn't. I did get to see half of Mitch Benn, pity I had to go part way through to get ready for Clanger Physics - it was my only panel item - I had done the research and thought up the idea. The 30odd people had a great session debating gravity, Roche limits, diet, breeding - there is a proposal for a poster session in the future.

Monday - Books did well (I had more donations) - total sales just under 650. Six boxes were empty after packing. Put a little in the van before the closing ceremony and the rest afterwards. Headed back to the Commonwealth just in time for the breakdown. This took many many hours, I finally rolled into the Dead dog party around 10pm.

Tuesday after con - Pack stuff, more stuff, yet more stuff, put scaffolding tower into van but decide to wait before we take it back for the traffic to drop a little. Checkout of the room, put all our stuff in the car and some junk in commonwealth (to go back in the van. With volunteers get the sofas and tables into the commonwealth, and take scaffold tower back - slow due to roadworks. Then load van with furniture, Kelvin and Gaspode take it to Aylesbury. Pack the wood in bundles to make it easier to move and store, sit eat and natter. Kelvin returns, van loaded he leaves about 5:30, I manage to extract Judith and we finally left the Hotel just before 6pm. We get home, unpack the car, have a quick meal and call Kelvin, he will be another hour. About 9pm he gets back to us, we persuade him to unpack on Wednesday, I take Rob home and go to bed.

Wednesday after con - Unpack, mooch around LJ, LI, and GZ, start writing this. Kelvin returns mid afternoon and we reload the rafters with books and tools. Collapse and finish report

Tomorrow I will get back to finding work - If you know of anyone who needs a Telecomms consultant, General Problem solver, Internet Services, Websites, Internet Shoping, Software written (C and/or Perl) then please get in touch - my CV is at http://www.waveneyconsulting.com (I don't wont to move, happy with contract work).

*jumps on bandwagon*  I wrote a report too - in my journal as follows:

    Friday and Saturday

    Sunday and Monday

Disclaimers: it's long, it's rambling, it contains some personal asides (including quite a bit on the writing workshop) that will be of supreme irrelevance to anyone else, and I went to a couple of the adult only panels so it's not entirely kid-safe.
